Sponsor-a-day

Happy Birthday, Susana!

August 8, 2020 by Katelyn

Today we are fortunate to have two lovely humans sponsoring days of sanctuary in celebration of birthdays! Our first gift is from Susana Pataro:

“It is my wish to celebrate this special day with my beloved chimpanzee friends. I am in lockdown since March, but happy to see that they are thriving in Cle Elum and also have new friends. I want to share with them additional love and care to all the beautiful things they receive from you every day. I will be at home in Buenos Aires alone with my glass of champagne and my chocolate cake watching the chimps celebration!”

Happy Birthday, Susana! Thanks so much for such kindness in celebrating your own special day with the chimpanzees! As you share a birthday with Foxie, it’s a good day for a birthday! 🙂 She and her friends will be celebrating alongside you with her version of champagne and chocolate cake (smoothies and watermelon bowls) and all of us here are sending all the good thoughts to you for a really special day during a really unique time in life. Thank you for allowing us to celebrate with you and for adding to the chimpanzees’ lives!

In memory of Barbara

August 1, 2020 by Katelyn

This day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees was sponsored by Suzanne Van Ness in memory of her sister, Barbara Beck, who was born on this date 65 years ago.

Suzanne, thank you for your gracious heart in choosing to honor Barbara and her memory in such a compassionate way. You and Barbara have made a difference in the lives of the chimpanzees and we’re so appreciative to you both for that. May comfort and wonderful memories weave themselves around you today.

Happy Birthday, Rachel!

July 28, 2020 by Katelyn

Long-time friend of the chimpanzees, Rachel Ruggeri, sponsored this beautiful summer day of sanctuary in an inspiring celebration of her birthday:

“Today marks my 51st birthday and there is no way I’d rather celebrate than to honor my friends (chimpanzee and bovine) at the sanctuary. I take great comfort knowing that all of the animals at the sanctuary are living their best lives. That gives me hope and right now…that is what we all need.”

Happy Birthday, Rachel! Thank you so much for helping us fill all our days with the celebration of hope to be found in each day. We’re so grateful to you for all the good you help surround the chimps and bovines with. All of us here hope your day of celebration is a heart-filled one of joy and wonder.

In Kevin’s memory

July 21, 2020 by Katelyn

Today was sponsored by the chimpanzees’ dear friend and neighbor, Shelley Winfrey, in honor of her brother, Kevin Clark, who passed away. Shelly graciously sponsors this day each year in Kevin’s memory and in her knowing that he would have loved the chimpanzees as well.

Shelley, thank you, from our hearts, for always including the chimpanzees in your life and family. May this beautiful summer day bring comforting and joyful memories to your heart. We’ll be thinking of Kevin and sending you and your family all the good thoughts.

I’m not sure you could look at this fella, Burrito, and not have a smiling heart. We love him so:

In honor of World Chimpanzee Day!

July 14, 2020 by Katelyn

Today is World Chimpanzee Day! And this amazing day was sponsored by Erin Yuhas and her incredible colleagues at Hartford Healthcare Medical Group Norwich! Erin shared this wonderful message about their generous gifts for the chimpanzees:

“Our medical office wears “Jeans for a Cause” every Friday and my cause for the month of June was your sanctuary and these special chimps. Together we raised over $300 and, in addition to sponsoring a day, we also sent the chimps many items from their wish list–including tons of blankets for nests! With all of us having worked in the medical field for many years, we can appreciate all these chimps went through in the name of science. I was happy to be able to share my knowledge of chimps and of your sanctuary with my coworkers helping to create awareness. I’m not sure my coworkers really liked my fact sheets and quiz, though! (This made us smile, Erin! 🙂 ). Thank you for all you do for these beautiful chimps and for the ones still to come!”

To everyone at Hartford Healthcare Medical Group Norwich, thank you so much for your generous hearts, your willingness to share your knowledge of, and learn more about, chimpanzees! You couldn’t have chosen a more perfect day to sponsor. Always, but especially during these uncertain times we all face, your support means the world to us, and most importantly, to the chimpanzees. From our hearts to yours, thank you!

You can learn more about this special day and hear a message from Dr. Jane Goodall here: “July 14, 1960, is the day Dr. Jane Goodall first stepped foot in what is now Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania, to study wild chimpanzees. In honor of humankind’s closest living relative, World Chimpanzee Day is a celebration of chimpanzees and an opportunity to raise awareness about the vital need for worldwide participation in their care, protection, and conservation in the wild and in captivity.”

Remembering Ned and Noreen

July 7, 2020 by Katelyn

Today was sponsored by Joan O’Flaherty in loving memory of her parents, Ned and Noreen O’Flaherty, on their wedding anniversary.

“My parents loved animals and supported conservation. They would appreciate all the care and hard work you do to give the cows and chimpanzees lives worth living.”

Joan, we can’t thank you enough for continuing your lovely parents’ legacy by always thinking of the chimpanzees (and now cattle!) and for the lasting difference you’ve made in their lives in Ned and Noreen’s honor. We hope your heart is full of comfort and peace today, just as you help ensure for the chimps and bovines.

Thank you, Manda!

July 4, 2020 by Katelyn

Manda Crawford sponsored this day of sanctuary: “In honor of Burrito, Jamie, Jody, Annie, Missy, Foxie, Negra, Honey B, Willy B, and Mave. The best day ever! Independence Day!”

Thank you so much, Manda, for helping to ensure the chimpanzees (and cattle) have as much freedom, independence and choice as possible, for all their days forward. We’re so grateful to be able to celebrate these things in the chimps’ lives. Happy Fourth of July!

Independence means different things to different people. Our personal and collective versions of freedom can be found in the broader sense of the word, yes, but also sometimes in the smallest of places. For the chimpanzees, while the freedom of living the natural lives they were meant to was taken from them, a home in sanctuary where they can just be themselves and are able to make as many choices as possible about their day, is the closest to freedom they’ll know.

Here at the sanctuary, in a way, we get to celebrate a kind of Independence Day every day, in one form or another. It’s a profound joy, a privilege and an inspiration to witness each of the chimpanzees explore both their inner and outer independence each and every day because of what you make possible for them. And while we celebrate and hold profound gratitude for these experiences in the chimps’ lives, we hold a space of honor and support for all those still waiting for their Independence Day, in whatever form that may take. Ultimately, all any living being wants and deserves is the freedom to live their lives as they’re meant to, to follow their hearts and make their own choices with the same dignity and respect afforded anyone else.

Whether it’s in taking the first tentative steps outside of not only your comfort zone, but all you’ve known, like Willy B:

To express the joy of being ourselves, like Honey B and Mave:

To rest in comfort, like Negra….

…and be at ease when you need to, or just because you feel like it, like Jody:

We see it when Missy runs to her heart’s content for no other reason than her sheer joy of running:

In Jamie’s freedom to express her wants and needs (and know she’ll be heard):

In the freedom to choose who you spend your time with and how:

In the ability to raise your children and live your lives with your family, like Betsy and Nutmeg:

and Honey and Meredith:

To walk your own path as you choose, like Annie:

To simply love who you love, like Foxie:

To dream, hope, and imagine (Jamie).

And to just be (Burrito):
