Happy Birthday, Heiwon!

Today’s day of sanctuary was sponsored by Don and Karen Young for their granddaughter, Heiwon Young, who turns 7 years old today! Don and Karen generously helped to make the chimpanzees’ 2-acre outdoor habitat, Young’s Hill, possible and we are grateful for their compassion and support of the chimps every single day. Today is in memory of Pat Betts

Today’s day of sanctuary was sponsored by the chimpanzees’ dear friend, Joseph Garza, in memory of Pat Betts. Joseph and his late wife, Carlene, have embraced the chimpanzees, including them in their lives, and in turn making such a difference in the chimpanzees’ lives. Joseph shared this beautiful message about Pat:

“Pat was a daughter, sister, teacher to our young, a wife, a mother and grandmother. She raised her only daughter to become a successful lawyer in the Billings, MT area and was a strong influence in the raising of her two grandchildren. And she was the aunt of my late wife Carlene. Pat was a strong woman who loved life and lived it well. She was an active member of her church and community and loved helping those without a voice, our animal friends. To that end I wish to dedicate this day of sponsorship to her. Rest in peace Pat.”

Today’s day of sanctuary for St. Patrick’s Day was sponsored by long time friend of the chimps, Erin McKenna! Such a fun day to sponsor!

If you’ve been a follower of the blog for very long you’ve probably noticed that we never pass up an opportunity to throw the chimpanzees a party. While this is fun for the chimpanzees and humans alike, it’s an important way to enrich the chimpanzees’ lives and provide them with variety and excitement to help alleviate the inevitable bouts of boredom that come with a life in captivity.

Party food forages help encourage the chimps’ natural foraging behaviors, something they would spend the majority of their day doing if they lived in the wild. Chimp safe decorations like paper streamers provide a fun wadging material for another common chimp practice. And who of us doesn’t just get excited when you see new and interesting things or favorite treats to eat?

Erin, thank you so much for thinking of the chimpanzees and enriching their day and their lives with your compassion and generosity! Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone!
