Video in Two Parts and Thanks to J.B.!

November 19, 2023 by Diana

Monica Best wanted to do something special for J.B. so she composed this incredibly nice note below and sent him a gift card to Lowes.

J.B. has spent the last two days, with the help of new part-time employee Jake, constructing the start to new structures on the hill. With the end of the Comfort & Joy auction yesterday, where we exceeded our goal for all of the Big Funds, including climbing structures, it seemed appropriate to relish the Comfort & Joy aspects of today and also to take a moment to acknowledge J.B. for all of his hard work.

Here’s Monica’s message to him:

Dear J.B.

I can still remember watching the video of The Bray being unveiled.  As I excitedly watched the chimps explore the fascinating new addition to their home,  I remember being in awe of the new structures.  Then, I recalled a conversation I had with Diana a few months prior.  Just a normal “hey, how you doing” chat.  She was updating me on the chimps and said you were out working on the new structures for The Bray.  Almost jokingly, I asked if you were doing it by yourself.  When she said, “pretty much”, I thought, that’s a lot of work for one person.  At that moment I believed you were Superman.

Now, jump forward to the unveiling and realizing just how incredible the structures were and how much work you must have put into them, I thought, he’s not Superman, he’s a magical unicorn.

I called Diana and told her how incredible the structures were and how flabbergasted I was that you had done all that work on your own.

I asked her if we could do something to show our appreciation and gratitude.  At first, we came up with a whole J.B. Appreciation Week.  But, soon realized that, like most Magical Unicorns that create amazing things, grant magical wishes and can turn a barren piece of land into a Chimpanzee Paradise, with a simple touch of their alicorn;   They, themselves, don’t always prefer grand, flashy declarations and constant praise.  That kind of laud actually can make them uncomfortable.

As sometime went by, and the Comfort and Joy Auction was getting started, I asked Diana if this might be a good time to quietly show our appreciation for your tireless devotion and care of the chimps we all love so much.  It just seemed fitting, since you bring the chimps so much

Comfort and Joy (and so much more), never asking anything in return.

So, Diana has a little present for you, that will hopefully help to get some tools and supplies, to aid in your magical unicorn tasks, that bring so much to the chimps.  Diana also had a wonderful idea to add a fund a cause to the auction, to raise money for new structures….and I know the amazing Sanctuary supporters will make sure the goal is reached.

I truly don’t know how to tell you how much you and all your hard work and dedication are appreciated by so many.

I’m always in awe of everyone at the sanctuary and all you do to ensure the chimps live their best lives.  Lives filled with joy, friends, enrichment, safety….and so much more.  Lives where the atrocities they endured, before arriving at the sanctuary, have slowly faded into the back of their minds and the fear, pain and loneliness of the past are become a distant memory.

Words can never be enough….

But, thank you for all you do.

With love from all CSNW supporters, volunteers, staff and most importantly….The Chimps.

P.S. Regarding the nest-building contest – Amanda and I quickly conceded to Grace and Ellen, who were seen in the video. Now that we know what the competition is like, we might challenge them to a rematch in the future.

Chimpanzee Identification Contest

December 3, 2016 by Diana

Do you want to win a 2017 Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest calendar?

If you can correctly identify each chimpanzee in all seven photos below, you’ll be entered to win!

Fine print: You can only enter once, so be sure of your answer before submitting your responses. The winner will be chosen at random among those with correct answers on Monday morning at 11:00am. If you are a volunteer of the sanctuary, you’re not eligible, because that wouldn’t be fair – but we’ll figure out another way for you to have a chance to win a calendar.

You can write your guesses in a comment below this post, or if you want more anonymity, email me: [email protected].

This is an “open book” quiz, so feel free to go through old blog posts and look on the chimpanzees’ individual pages (click on the Polaroid-looking photos at the very top of the page).

Here we go:

Jamie’s Brain

August 17, 2013 by Diana

You know that whole thing about right brain vs. left brain and people identifying themselves as one or the other? Well, Jamie seems to be ambidextrous-brained. You know she’s an artist because you’ve been voting for her piece in the chimp art contest every day this week, right?

Her left brain side is pretty strong, though. As J.B.’s video demonstrated yesterday, Jamie is a skilled tool user. And she loves to solve puzzles. Just watch her solve a puzzle that the human’s created for her recently:

Jamie’s sunflower seed painting

August 15, 2013 by Diana

So, by now you hopefully know that Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest’s chimpanzee boss-lady Jamie is entered in this very unique chimpanzee-only art contest sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States.

You can and should vote for her piece every day until the contest ends on August 22nd at 5:00 ET. The sanctuary that cares for the winning chimpanzee will receive a $10,000 grant from HSUS!

If you aren’t on our e-news list (which you can remedy by signing up here), or if you missed the email sent out yesterday, below is the video we shared of Jamie during the session where she created her mixed media masterpiece that is in the contest.

There are many things that I like about this video and Jamie’s approach. In particular, I like the way she carefully applies the paint to the sunflower seed shell with her finger and the way she wipes off her hands when she’s done. These are classic Jamie things to do.

I hope you appreciate the effort she put into her art and give her your vote! The voting website even allows you to be reminded to vote each day by texting CHIMPART TO 30644 (message and data rates may apply).

In other good news, MSN shared this video on their page today!

Fire and Art

August 13, 2013 by Diana

One year ago today, the sanctuary property was engulfed in flames and smoke. We thought at one point that the caregiver house that J.B. and I live in was gone (it turned out the roof and siding had caught fire, but the interior was saved). J.B. stayed with the chimps as the flames spread, and the rest of the staff watched helplessly from the road or waited anxiously for updates.

It’s not a day any of us would like to repeat, but we knew the chimpanzees were safe thanks to our own protocols and the actions of the local volunteer firefighters. We can never thank Kittitas County Fire Districts (KCFD) #1 and #7  enough for what they did for us and what they do for neighbors and strangers everyday. Read the account from the Seattle Met, or, in our own words, through our blog posts.

We’ve made even more improvements to our protocols and our equipment based on our experience last year. We are still working on our future emergency preparedness while also raising money for our general operating costs, and we have a great and fun way for you to help us get a nice grant!

The Humane Society of the United States is sponsoring a chimpanzee art contest, and our resident boot-loving artist boss of the sanctuary, Jamie, has a piece entered! Voting for Jamie’s mixed-media piece will not only give her the accolades she knows she deserves, but will also give the sanctuary a chance to win $10,000! You can vote for Jamie’s piece once per day from now until the end of the contest, which is 5:00pm ET on August 22nd.

Please vote today and every day and share with everyone you know via email, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc!

We need your vote!

August 13, 2010 by Diana

Help us win $5,000. Vote for us now. You can only vote once.

We have submitted as idea for the Justmeans $20,000 Digital Paperless Fundraising Challenge. As you know, we do almost all of our fundraising through our blog and social networking sites – no paper needed, thanks to you! One of our supporters alerted us to this contest for organizations doing just that – raising money without the direct-mail, paper-heavy approach.

We’re perfect for the contest and we have a strong submission focused on our recent Anniversary Fundraising. But we need your votes to get us back in the lead.

We want to win the $5,000 grand prize!

Please vote today and ask all of your friends to vote too. It only takes a minute to sign up and cast your vote for the chimps. You can only vote once, so if you’ve already voted – thank you!
