chimpanzee sanctuary

Happy Birthday, Julie!

June 16, 2016 by Katelyn

Today’s day of sanctuary was sponsored by Karen Olson in honor of her sister, Julie Olson, on her birthday! You may recall that Julie recently sponsored Karen’s birthday for the chimpanzees! Karen shared this special message about today:

“Happy Birthday to the best big sister anyone could ever have. Julie is kind to everyone, humans and animals alike. She will be happy to share her special day with the Cle Elum Seven!”

Karen and Julie, what a wonderful idea to trade the gifts of sponsoring a day of sanctuary for one another and the chimpanzees! Thank you so much! And Julie we hope that your birthday is the best one yet, full of all the good things that you bring to the lives of others.

Thank you, Kathleen!

June 13, 2016 by Katelyn

It’s a big day at the sanctuary today as we celebrate both Negra’s honorary 43rd birthday AND the chimpanzees’ 8th anniversary in their sanctuary home! And we’re so touched that our good friend, Kathleen Corby, chose to sponsor this very special day! Kathleen shared this beautiful message about today:

“I have to quote J.B. from his blog post (06/10/16) on Negra’s special day : “It’s often said that healing is not a matter of forgetting, but of accumulating new memories that, over time, crowd out the bad ones. Eventually, memories of courage and adventure push aside memories of fear and anxiety. Those memories will never be forgotten. But every time I see Negra absorbing the view from the top of Young’s Hill, I think of how far she’s come in these last eight years, and I hope that moment becomes yet another healing memory that pushes an old one further out of reach.” Dear Negra, I love you so. Eight years is such a short time to have come so very far. I am astounded and deeply touched each year by your brave awakenings. I could not do the same. The word “resilience” does not even come close to expressing the amazing capacity of love, strength, and forgiveness that lies within your heart. Today I celebrate all the positive, loving memories that have accumulated in your heart over your 8 years in sanctuary. Happy 43rd Birthday Queen Negra! XOXOXO (And Happy 8 Years CSNW!)”

Kathleen, thank you so much for welcoming the chimpanzees into your big, beautiful heart and for truly being part of their lives each day. What a gift to have you in the world. We truly appreciate all that you do for the chimpanzees and your sponsorship of this amazing day full of celebration, love, and home!

Happy Birthday, Queen Negra! And Happy Anniversary to Annie, Missy, Burrito, Jody, Foxie, Jamie and Negra, the seven people who are the heart and soul of CSNW!

Happy Birthday, Karen!

June 8, 2016 by Katelyn

Today the chimpanzees are celebrating a day of sanctuary gifted to them by Julie Olson in honor of her sister, Karen Olson, on her birthday! Julie shared this message about today:

“I am sponsoring a day for the chimps in honor of my sister Karen’s birthday. She is the biggest animal lover I know and has followed the Cle Elum 7 since they came to the sanctuary.”

Julie, thank you so much for  giving such a compassionate gift for Karen and the chimpanzees! We are so grateful to you both for your support of the chimpanzees and for being part of making their lives in sanctuary better with each passing year.

Karen, we wish the same for you and hope this is your best birthday yet! Happy Birthday hoots from all of us at CSNW!!

Jody is amazing at celebrating each day as she sees fit:

Introducing the Database of Chimpanzee Enrichment!

June 7, 2016 by Anna

The unfortunate reality for all chimpanzees that face captivity (even ones in a high-quality sanctuary) is that captive life can be boring. Chimpanzees are highly intelligent and active primates, and the truth is that no enclosure could possibly replicate the constant changes and choices that free-living situations provide. Another unfortunate reality is chimpanzees that have grown up in captivity cannot be returned safely to the wild where they belong. It is for this reason that sanctuaries exist, to give captive chimpanzees as many choices and enhancements in their lives as possible, while still keeping them safe, so that they can enjoy their lives in peace and comfort.

Caregivers at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest are always working towards improving the quality of physical and psychological stimuli that we have to offer the Cle Elum 7. We provide a variety of environmental enrichment to challenge their bodies and minds and we are always looking for more ideas. Today we wanted to announce our newest foray into the world of enrichment project sharing, the Database of Chimpanzee Enrichment!

Several months ago we started building a database tool for chimpanzee caregivers around the world to be able to browse our enrichment activities. However, simply compiling and sharing our ideas is not the end of the road! Not only will online visitors be able to see and learn about the types of enrichment that CSNW uses, but we also hope to be able to learn from and share the enrichment of other facilities over time. We have a couple of guidelines for submitting enrichment ideas to us so please visit this link if you are interested in contributing.

Everyone should feel free to peruse this database at their leisure, adding comments or questions at the bottom of each enrichment post. Please also share this blog post on social media to help get the word out! Hopefully, this collaborative effort will lead to an open dialogue about enrichment and help enhance and improve the lives of captive chimpanzees everywhere.

So without further adieu, we bring you the Database of Chimpanzee Enrichment!

You can also find it by visiting our website https://chimpsnw.org/ and scrolling over the About Us tab or typing http://enrichment.chimpsnw.org/ into your address bar.

Happy browsing!

Today we remember Robert Ruggeri

June 6, 2016 by Katelyn

This special day of sanctuary was sponsored by the chimpanzees’ good friend, Rachel Ruggeri, in memory of her father, Robert Ruggeri. Rachel shared this wonderful message about today:

“My father loved animals and always believed freedom was preferable to security…for all creatures. He would have been proud to see the gang at Cle Elum find both their freedom and their happiness. Monday, June 6th would have been my father’s 80th birthday. In his honor, may the Cle Elum gang know freedom for the rest of their lives.”

Rachel we are so full of gratitude to you for all that you do for the chimpanzees – for providing them with the opportunity to live out their days with the freedom to be, and continue to discover, exactly who they are in each minute of the day. Freedom means different things to different people and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for providing them with a home in which they feel secure enough to be more courageous, joyful, and comfortable in their own skin, expanding far beyond any physical boundaries.

Robert must have been an amazing person and we are so happy to honor him today! All of us here at CSNW are wishing you a day filled with love, joy and comfort as you celebrate the memory of your father.

Thank you, Robyn!

June 4, 2016 by Katelyn

Today’s wonderful gift of a day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees was sponsored by Robyn Petticrew.

Robyn has been a supporter of the chimpanzees for several years, and we know she’s expressed a fondness for both Annie and Foxie, so we picked out some of our favorite photos of these two together to thank Robyn for her donation to sponsor the day.

Have a beautiful day, Robin!

Some things about Foxie

June 1, 2016 by Katelyn

Foxie is an endearing soul. She is small in stature, but never in spirit. With each passing season we have watched her grow stronger, braver and more curious about her sanctuary surroundings and all on offer to her. When the chimps first arrived Foxie was exceptionally leery of enrichment, the structures, things touching her, new things in general – all understandable. Though she still tends to be cautious, she is now often the first to lead her family out to explore every inch of new structures, investigate any perceived threats, and expel intruders with a swipe or whack of her Dora or troll doll du jour as she protects her home and her family.

web_foxie_photo_shoot_gh_V_kd_IMG_2901

web_foxie_photo_shoot_gh_III_kd_IMG_2896

Foxie is a joyful soul. She often spins, pirouettes, chases, climbs, leaps, and back-flips her way through the day and brings so much happiness to all our lives. She tends to be the peacemaker of the group and prefers for everyone to get along and when arguments inevitably erupt as they do in any family, especially a chimp family, she is often the person offering reassurance and encouraging reconciliation. That said, she has no problem voicing her opinion when she is upset with someone. I’ve watched her go after her good friend, Burrito, in a fury when he’s done something to make her angry. And I’ve also watched her hold out her small arms to him as he jumps into them for reassurance, bowling this tiny woman over. But she rights herself and holds tight to her dear blustery friend until he’s calmed.

web_foxie_photo_shoot_gh_VIII_kd_IMG_2904

web_foxie_photo_shoot_gh_VIV_kd_IMG_2905

Foxie is an intelligent, loving, forgiving, and sassy soul. She has ten tiny, fantastic toes that she likes to hold outside the caging and wiggle at her caregivers or tickle the backs of our hands with. She loves to get mouthfuls of water and playfully spit on us. One of her favorite summertime games is “inside – outside chase” in which she runs from one end of the chimp house to the other as we meet her at either side from the outside. She seems to think this is hilarious. She blows raspberries with gusto to let us know when she wants something, like more breakfast smoothie or a doll outside the caging or sometimes just our company. She sometimes calls me over as we’re closing the chimp house for the night and just reaches out and holds her finger to my hand and gazes into my eyes with a quick head nod before making her way to bed for the evening. She’s removed splinters from my hand, reassured me when I’ve been hurt, and has even held boss lady, Jamie’s, arm to stop her when she has thrown poop at me.

web_foxie_photo_shoot_gh_IV_kd_IMG_2899

Foxie is a mother to two sons, David and Steve – a rare set of twins – and two daughters, Angie and Kelsey. She is an important  member of a family who greatly loves her. She is an inspiring and larger than life example of not only what it means to overcome and heal, but to thrive. And she is one of my best friends. I think sometimes your heart holds so much love for someone it feels as though it can’t possibly fit into one small, beating space, let alone into words. But if it fit into a picture, it would look like this woman.
