Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest

Negra goes outside, just because she can!

October 24, 2017 by Anna

This morning I opened the door to Young’s Hill and 6 chimpanzees poured out onto the hill to investigate any changes that might have happened overnight in their 2 acre outdoor enclosure. Moments after opening the door, Negra surprised me by venturing out as well. I expected her to stop and maybe eat a little Autumn grass before going back inside, but instead she continued further out onto the hill and climbed a structure where she could overlook the valley below the sanctuary. Negra is mainly motivated by food and comfortable beds, and she seems to go outdoors primarily to forage, so I was pretty excited for her to feel secure enough to go out on the hill, just to get some sunshine and enjoy the view.

After taking a few photos, I left her to clean the playroom. Twenty minutes later, I peaked out the window and saw that she was still there, with the same dreamy look in her eyes! Elizabeth took a few more photos.

When Negra is outside, the other chimps get pretty excited about it too. Today, Missy and Jamie surrounded her for some grooming.

Breakfast! YUM!

October 23, 2017 by Kelsi

Breakfast is a very exciting meal for the chimps. And why wouldn’t it be? What is more exciting than fruit, smoothie, vitamins, chow, and peanuts? Today the chimps had bananas, plums, and a banana & peanut butter smoothie. Below are a collection of photos from today’s beautiful crisp fall morning at CSNW!

On Rainy Days

October 22, 2017 by Kelsi

For most of the day it was pouring down rain at CSNW. To pass the time until the rain cleared the chimps tried to keep themselves busy with their favorite activities. Foxie played with her new dolls, Annie and Missy groomed, Negra and Jody napped, Jamie supervised volunteers and staff while they cleaned, and Burrito played with his scooter and a slinky. For lunch volunteers prepared green onions, roasted beets, and roasted potatoes. Nothing sounds better than warm food on a cold day. The rain finally cleared which meant it was time to put some boots on and walk. All in all we had a nice quiet rainy day at CSNW.

An exciting lunch:

Busy work

October 20, 2017 by Anna

We had this giant box of shipping/moving paper saved up with a fun enrichment project in mind. After Jamie and Burrito dismantled the box, Missy was more than happy to recycle the paper as lining in her giant nest!

That new doll smell!

October 19, 2017 by Anna

A couple of weeks ago we introduced you to Foxie’s new love of a purple haired Strawberry Shortcake doll. Well yesterday her new shiny friends arrived in the mail! Foxie was so excited that she wanted us to playfully chase her around holding the box before she could even bring herself to cuddle them.

Lazy play for a lazy day

October 18, 2017 by Anna

Missy and Negra didn’t feel the need to release much energy in this morning’s play bout. Notice how it devolves slowly into a grooming session. Negra approves of all interactions where she gets to stay in bed!

Happy Birthday, Jan!

October 17, 2017 by Katelyn

Kery Shaw and Terran Baylor sponsored a day of sanctuary in honor of Jan Galeazzi! They shared this message about their gift:

“Jan Galeazzi is Animal Place’s Rescue Ranch Manager. She is a chicken mom, goat whisperer and mentor. Above all Jan is humble, smart, selfless, and passionate, and just an incredible human being. Jan has had several lives, doing several things, which left her feeling not satisfied. Through one of her jobs she met her fiancé who was aware of her feeling dissatisfied and yearn to do more. He encouraged her to go do those things. She loves running, rock climbing, kayaking and being around intellectual individuals very much like herself. Most of all, Jan is a giver and a healer. She saw an opportunity to volunteer at Animal Place and being an animal lover, saw it as a great opportunity to give back. It did not take long for Jan to be hired on as a full time employee and then eventually take on the position she has now. The first time I volunteered at Rescue Ranch I was immediately impressed at the way things were run. The staff remarked it was because of Jan. There is not a single person or staff member that does not love her, including myself. Jan works really hard and has made several compromises to do what she does. She has seen a lot and knows a lot. People have no idea what it truly takes to handle the emotion and physical aspects of her life. To know a woman of such a great caliber blows my mind. I am proud and honored to know her and call her my friend. So much love and respect. Today and everyday we HONOR and CELEBRATE you Jan! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, All our Love, Kéry & Terran”

Thanks so much Kery and Terran for thinking of the chimps as you celebrate Jan! We appreciate you always holding them in your hearts.

Jan, all of us at CSNW wish you the happiest day and hope that all you contribute to the world and those around you comes back to you tenfold. Happy Birthday!
