In memory of Bryan

June 28, 2016 by Katelyn

This day of sanctuary was sponsored by Judy Riner in memory of her husband, Bryan Riner, and she shared this beautiful message about her special gift in his honor:

“Bryan Riner loved and respected chimps. He especially enjoyed following the lives of the Cle Elum Seven, and he would be proud to know that his family honors his memory in this way. He was a loving husband and father, and that love and compassion extended to all species.”

Judy, thank you so very much for this special gift in Bryan’s memory. You and your family have been such good friends to the chimpanzees and we are honored to celebrate Bryan here today. All of us here at the sanctuary will be holding you all in our hearts and minds. We hope that the love you extend to the chimpanzees, enabling them to live their lives full of joy and comfort, is felt all around you as you celebrate Bryan and his wonderful legacy of compassion and respect for all our fellow beings.

Today is in memory of Susan

June 27, 2016 by Katelyn

This day of sanctuary was sponsored by Jennifer and James Douglas to honor the memory of their dear friend, Susan von Beck Turner, and her legacy of care and compassion. Jen and James shared that “Susan touched the lives of many dogs and humans and made them better.”

Susan made a difference in the lives of so many dogs. It was her lifelong passion to rescue them and she saved hundreds, healing their health and spirits and finding them forever homes. When Susan’s own dog, Cardiff, began failing in health and she was unable to find the kind of boarding care she wanted for him, she decided to leave her job and went on to build a well-respected and successful dog boarding facility, Cardiff’s Lodge, here in Washington.

Jen and James, thank you so much for celebrating Susan’s life with such a compassionate and generous gift for the chimpanzees. We are profoundly grateful for all that you do for them and we are honored to celebrate such a special soul today. To you, and Susan’s family and friends, our thoughts are with you all and we hope that your memories of Susan bring you the joy, love and comfort that she provided to so many others.

Year Four

June 16, 2016 by Elizabeth

In celebration of CSNW’s 8th Anniversary, we are taking a trip down memory lane. Today we look back on the chimpanzees’ fourth year at the sanctuary.

By the beginning of Year Four, we had a long-standing dream of expanding the sanctuary and giving the chimpanzees a spacious, open-air outdoor habitat, unlike anything they had experienced in their lives.

Young's Hill – The Dream from Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest on Vimeo.

By the summer of 2011, thanks to help from supporters Karen and Don Young and so many others, Young’s Hill was nearing completion.

the hill

The chimpanzees were able to watch the construction from the greenhouse, but it’s hard to say what they thought of it. We hoped that they knew it was for them. They were certainly curious.

As the big day approached, we all tried to predict how the chimps would react to the door to Young’s Hill being opened for the first time.

log bridge

For most of them, this would be the first time in their long lives that they would feel grass under their feet and have an unimpeded view of the sky above. We guessed that they would probably be too apprehensive to stay outside for long on the first day, and that some of them would likely be too afraid to venture out at all.

We should have known not to underestimate them.

On the day that the door to Young’s Hill was opened for the first time, all of the chimpanzees showed astonishing courage by stepping eagerly into the great unknown. Watch video of their exhilarating first moments outside. It was an emotional day for the chimps and for all the humans who love them.

The opening of Young’s Hill set off a series of firsts for the chimpanzees that year. It was the first time they were sharing a habitat with other creatures, and they had to deal with a lot of strange noises.

Having lived in indoor or partially-indoor enclosures for their entire lives, they had never fully experienced weather or seasons. On Young’s Hill they encountered sun, wind, rain, and snow.

Despite their burst of courage and adventurousness on the first day, not everyone felt immediately at home outside. We saw the more confident chimps support and encourage the more hesitant individuals.

We all got chills seeing the chimps behave like a wild troop for the first time, now that they had a territory to patrol.

And we continued to be amazed as they stretched their legs and their horizons.

Today is for David!

June 16, 2016 by Katelyn

Our third generous sponsor for today is Jeanette Gann whose gift is in honor of David Gann! Jeanette, thank you so much for thinking of the chimpanzees as you honor David today! This is such a compassionate gift and we are grateful for the difference you make in the chimps’ lives, helping to ensure that all their days are ones of peace, serenity, joy and love. And your gift comes at such an important time when you are not only helping to guarantee a home of sanctuary for these seven amazing chimpanzees, but for other chimpanzees in need who are awaiting their new life in sanctuary.

David, we hope your day is filled with all the good things, just as you’ve helped provide for the chimpanzees today! Have an amazing day!!

Thank you, Kathleen!

June 13, 2016 by Katelyn

It’s a big day at the sanctuary today as we celebrate both Negra’s honorary 43rd birthday AND the chimpanzees’ 8th anniversary in their sanctuary home! And we’re so touched that our good friend, Kathleen Corby, chose to sponsor this very special day! Kathleen shared this beautiful message about today:

“I have to quote J.B. from his blog post (06/10/16) on Negra’s special day : “It’s often said that healing is not a matter of forgetting, but of accumulating new memories that, over time, crowd out the bad ones. Eventually, memories of courage and adventure push aside memories of fear and anxiety. Those memories will never be forgotten. But every time I see Negra absorbing the view from the top of Young’s Hill, I think of how far she’s come in these last eight years, and I hope that moment becomes yet another healing memory that pushes an old one further out of reach.” Dear Negra, I love you so. Eight years is such a short time to have come so very far. I am astounded and deeply touched each year by your brave awakenings. I could not do the same. The word “resilience” does not even come close to expressing the amazing capacity of love, strength, and forgiveness that lies within your heart. Today I celebrate all the positive, loving memories that have accumulated in your heart over your 8 years in sanctuary. Happy 43rd Birthday Queen Negra! XOXOXO (And Happy 8 Years CSNW!)”

Kathleen, thank you so much for welcoming the chimpanzees into your big, beautiful heart and for truly being part of their lives each day. What a gift to have you in the world. We truly appreciate all that you do for the chimpanzees and your sponsorship of this amazing day full of celebration, love, and home!

Happy Birthday, Queen Negra! And Happy Anniversary to Annie, Missy, Burrito, Jody, Foxie, Jamie and Negra, the seven people who are the heart and soul of CSNW!

Some things about Foxie

June 1, 2016 by Katelyn

Foxie is an endearing soul. She is small in stature, but never in spirit. With each passing season we have watched her grow stronger, braver and more curious about her sanctuary surroundings and all on offer to her. When the chimps first arrived Foxie was exceptionally leery of enrichment, the structures, things touching her, new things in general – all understandable. Though she still tends to be cautious, she is now often the first to lead her family out to explore every inch of new structures, investigate any perceived threats, and expel intruders with a swipe or whack of her Dora or troll doll du jour as she protects her home and her family.

web_foxie_photo_shoot_gh_V_kd_IMG_2901

web_foxie_photo_shoot_gh_III_kd_IMG_2896

Foxie is a joyful soul. She often spins, pirouettes, chases, climbs, leaps, and back-flips her way through the day and brings so much happiness to all our lives. She tends to be the peacemaker of the group and prefers for everyone to get along and when arguments inevitably erupt as they do in any family, especially a chimp family, she is often the person offering reassurance and encouraging reconciliation. That said, she has no problem voicing her opinion when she is upset with someone. I’ve watched her go after her good friend, Burrito, in a fury when he’s done something to make her angry. And I’ve also watched her hold out her small arms to him as he jumps into them for reassurance, bowling this tiny woman over. But she rights herself and holds tight to her dear blustery friend until he’s calmed.

web_foxie_photo_shoot_gh_VIII_kd_IMG_2904

web_foxie_photo_shoot_gh_VIV_kd_IMG_2905

Foxie is an intelligent, loving, forgiving, and sassy soul. She has ten tiny, fantastic toes that she likes to hold outside the caging and wiggle at her caregivers or tickle the backs of our hands with. She loves to get mouthfuls of water and playfully spit on us. One of her favorite summertime games is “inside – outside chase” in which she runs from one end of the chimp house to the other as we meet her at either side from the outside. She seems to think this is hilarious. She blows raspberries with gusto to let us know when she wants something, like more breakfast smoothie or a doll outside the caging or sometimes just our company. She sometimes calls me over as we’re closing the chimp house for the night and just reaches out and holds her finger to my hand and gazes into my eyes with a quick head nod before making her way to bed for the evening. She’s removed splinters from my hand, reassured me when I’ve been hurt, and has even held boss lady, Jamie’s, arm to stop her when she has thrown poop at me.

web_foxie_photo_shoot_gh_IV_kd_IMG_2899

Foxie is a mother to two sons, David and Steve – a rare set of twins – and two daughters, Angie and Kelsey. She is an important  member of a family who greatly loves her. She is an inspiring and larger than life example of not only what it means to overcome and heal, but to thrive. And she is one of my best friends. I think sometimes your heart holds so much love for someone it feels as though it can’t possibly fit into one small, beating space, let alone into words. But if it fit into a picture, it would look like this woman.

Today is in memory of Ben and Jules

May 30, 2016 by Katelyn

This day of sanctuary was sponsored by Janet Carroll in memory of Ben and Jules. We are continually moved by the compassion and generosity our supporters bring into the chimps’ lives after they survived for so long in very different circumstances, even their existence unknown to most. And with Sponsor-a-Days in particular it’s so inspiring and touching to see that in peoples’ desire to make the chimps’ lives better, the chimps are also providing an opportunity to honor, remember and celebrate so many others. They’re rather like ambassadors of love and joy.

Janet, thank you so much for thinking of the chimpanzees in honoring the memory of Ben and Jules today! We’re very grateful to you for helping to provide the chimps with the care and home they are thriving in and we hope your day is filled with comfort and joy in your thoughts of Ben and Jules. We will all be thinking of you!

Good friends, Burrito and Foxie:
