Creative Fundraising

July 10, 2009 by J.B.

Recently, the students at Walter Strom Middle School here in Cle Elum held a fundraiser for the chimps with the support of the Cle Elum Kiwanis Club. By collecting change, the students  raised $181, which we will use to care for the Cle Elum Seven. We are so grateful for the wonderful support we continue to receive from our community. Thanks everyone!

And if you are in the Seattle area, visit Corrine at the Hair Company on Greenwood. Corrine took part in our Holiday Fundraising program by donating the proceeds of her haircuts to CSNW, and she decided to keep the program going! Thanks Corrine!

Caregiving

July 5, 2009 by Diana

One of the more fantastic things that has happened in the last year is that the chimpanzees have new caregivers – staff and volunteer. Jackie is our newest staff person, and she is just finishing up chimpanzee care training. It is so fun to see the chimps react and interact with new friends. Today I spied on Jamie and Foxie playing with Jackie through the barn doors. Jamie had a stretchy hose-like thing that she was using to play tug-of-war. Being Jamie, she naturally wore a bikini top draped around her neck (complete with trolls tied to the strings).

In addition to playing with the chimps, which is a very important job, Jackie’s been hard at work caring for the chimps’ garden beds. Check them out!

July 4th forage one year later

July 4, 2009 by Diana

I think it’s really starting to sink in that the Cle Elum Seven have been in sanctuary for one year. We can now look back at blog posts from exactly one year ago and see how much has changed, including our videography skills! So, watch the video below and check out the video and photos from the last 4th of July celebration: https://chimpsnw.org/?p=177

Missy and Negra play

July 2, 2009 by Elizabeth

The warm weather has put everyone here in good moods. Even Negra is feeling playful. Those of you who follow the blog faithfully know that Negra covets peace and quiet, and would typically prefer to chill out under a blanket than to join the other chimps’ rambunctious play. Yesterday, however, Missy was able to ease Negra into some gentle play by dialing down the energy a few notches. Negra even got to keep her blanket.

Tireless Missy

June 27, 2009 by Elizabeth

The weather in Cle Elum is gorgeous today and the chimps have spent many hours outside in the sun. Missy has been so playful that she has barely stopped to eat.

Negra’s new life

June 12, 2009 by Diana

Tomorrow we are celebrating Negra’s honorary birthday and the Cle Elum Seven’s anniversary of their arrival to Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest.

Negra is about 36 years old. She was captured in Africa as an infant and brought to the U.S. to be used in biomedical research. She had four babies during her decades in research.  She had over sixty liver biopsies while being used as a test subject for hepatitis vaccines. She has spent the vast majority of her life in small cages in various laboratories. She lived without access to the outside. Without windows. Without the chance to feel the sun on her face.

I think this photo, taken a couple of weeks ago, illustrates what sanctuary means to Negra:

You can support Negra today and wish her a happy birthday by giving a donation on her fundraising page. CSNW couldn’t exist without the support of so many. You provide the chimpanzees with a new life.
