Looks can be deceiving

August 24, 2020 by Katelyn

It might look like Burrito was just lazing around all day. Trust me when I say that was not the case for one single second. He’s somehow managed to incorporate lying down with his heart-full-of-joy shenanigans and I think this is his new version of “resting” in between the really wild play sessions (when the humans need a breather and just can’t run and leap anymore).

There’s the lying down and pulling/dragging himself along the caging style chase, somersaulting from end to end of the greenhouse and landing in a headstand with his body against the caging, only to slowly slide down until he somersaults his way back, and lying in the corner of the greenhouse pivoting from side to side as a caregiver pops back and forth on the other side. Yes, I realize these would all be much more enjoyable and easy to visualize in video form, but the last photo might give you an idea of how challenging that can be at times. 😉 At least there is J.B.’s recent amazing video of Burrito’s more signature wild moves in the meantime.

We joke a lot about Burrito’s antics. But in honesty, not a day goes by, not a moment in his presence, in which I am not acutely aware of what a marvelous miracle it is to leap about and play with him, even when we’re worn out, to hear his deafening food squeaks, to see him playing with the other chimps more than ever, to have the opportunity to make his day better in any way he sees fit. We love this guy more than we can say. I sincerely could never fully express the gratitude and joy that makes our hearts sing, absolutely sing, in seeing his profound resiliency and undiluted happiness these past many months. And somehow, it seems to grow by leaps and bounds (sometimes, literally) on a daily basis. Burrito, like each of the chimpanzees, is an immeasurable gift to this chimpanzee and human family of his. An immeasurable gift.

Happy Birthday, Becky!

August 24, 2020 by Katelyn

Good friend of the chimpanzees and bovines, Tobin, sponsored this day of sanctuary in honor of Becky Babcock, in celebration of her birthday! Tobin shared this message about today which is sure to bring a smile to all your hearts:

“I am sponsoring today in honor of my erstwhile “Chimpanzee Pal”, Rebecca Babcock. Ever since I first introduced Becky to the website of CSNW and the residents thereof, she has gone bananas (or, as the other August birthday chimps – Foxie and Missy – might have it, she has gone completely watermelons and tomatoes)! Rarely does one of our marathon cross-country phone calls transpire wherein we both speak at length about the Cle Elum 14. While our gossip is not salacious, no doubt our conversations are enough to make Annie’s ears perk up. And now that Becky is becoming a woman of a certain age, it is time for her to assume her adult responsibilities. If she is going to continue to rave and rave about Mave, the least that she can do is to become her Chimpanzee Pal on her birthday.”

Tobin, this is wonderful! Thank you for sharing your own love of the chimpanzees and continuing to add so much to the lives of the chimps and humans of the sanctuary, alike. We so appreciate you!

Happy Birthday, Becky! We’re so happy to welcome you to our chimpanzee family and we definitely understand the raving about Mave! I mean, how could you not? 🙂 Have a beautiful day!

In memory of Debera

August 23, 2020 by Katelyn

Long-time friend of the sanctuary and volunteer, Jen Douglas, sponsored a day of sanctuary today in memory of Debera Verlinda. Jen shared this message about her gift:

“My friend Debera had the honour of sharing her birthday with Missy! She passed away on July 17th but hope Missy is willing to share the spotlight with her today, as she was truly a special person. Debera and I volunteered together at Homeward Pet on the Wednesday morning dog-walking shift for 13 years. We also volunteered together at CSNW. We had such good times through the years with all the dogs. She was an inspiration to me, she was a talented artist, loving, compassionate, selfless and very courageous and positive throughout her battle with cancer. I feel so privileged to have known her. She lived life to the full for the time that was left and made this world a better place for both people and animals. I’ll always miss her. Here’s to Debera and Missy!”

Jen, this is a such a lovely way to remember someone, and to be remembered. We’re so sorry to know of Debera’s passing and for the loss of your dear friend. Thank you so much for honoring Debera’s legacy and for giving us the opportunity to celebrate her and the compassionate and inspirational life she led.

Another special and inspiring woman whose birthday we are celebrating today: Missy! Party preparations are under way as we get ready for Missy’s 45th birthday! Be sure to check in later today (especially if you share in Missy’s love of tomatoes 😉 ). It’s a good day for birthdays.

In memory of Doreen Hughes

August 21, 2020 by Katelyn

Donna Hughes is sponsoring today in memory of her beloved twin sister, Doreen Hughes. Donna and Doreen have been, and will always remain, dear friends to the chimpanzees and humans of the sanctuary and we’re honored to get to hold them both in our thoughts and our hearts today. Donna shared this beautiful message for Doreen:

“It was on this date, 41 years ago, that we moved to NYC. Although you have been with me in spirit only for the last two years, not a moment goes by that you are not thought of, Doreen. Our every adventure in NYC for so many decades will always be burnt into my memory. Although the Big Apple, like much of the country, is closed down right now, Central Park is not, and I spend a lot of time in there. Walking for hours, watching the birds, the turtles, all of the flowers. All the things you loved to do. We always did a big event (or two!) on this day, and this year, I will go to Central Park and have a picnic. Don’t worry, you’ll be right there. A special shout out to Foxie, our girl! I am so happy that you got to visit the Sanctuary a few years ago. It was such a meaningful day. Happy NYC Anniversary!!! xo Donna”

Donna, thank you so much, for allowing us to share in this day of memory and celebration of, and with, you both! We miss Doreen so much and are so grateful for the time you both got to spend here with us all. May your special celebration in amazing Central Park today be nothing short of magical. We are thinking of you both and holding you in our hearts. Happy NYC Anniversary to you both!! Seems like that calls for some Foxie-style pirouettes!

A wonderful memory. Donna (left) and Doreen (right), and Missy, Foxie and Negra (background left to right):

Happy Birthday, Arlene!

August 19, 2020 by Katelyn

Michael sponsored this beautiful summer day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees and bovines in honor of his wife, Arlene, and shared, “I would like to dedicate this day to my beautiful wife’s birthday!!”

Michael and Arlene are long-time friends of the sanctuary who have such kind and gracious hearts and we are so happy to be able to celebrate with them today!

Michael, I just think it’s the most wonderful and inspiring way to honor someone you love by celebrating their life through making the lives of others better. Thanks for lifting so many hearts today in honor of Arlene!

Happy Birthday, Arlene! All of us here are wishing you the happiest of days! Though in the midst of these gobsmackingly challenging times we find ourselves in, there is so much beauty and joy still surrounding us and you always seem to have a way of finding and sharing that. We hope this birthday is one to remember in all the best ways. Thank you both, for all the good you help ensure surrounds the chimpanzees and bovines and for being part of our sanctuary family.

For Amber and Jenny!

August 18, 2020 by Katelyn

Kathleen Zasimovich sponsored a day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees with this lovely note about her gift:

“This gift is given in honor if my 2 beautiful nieces who are so full of life, Amber and Jenny. Celebrate this day with all of the chimpanzees.”

Kathleen, this is the sweetest gift and what a wonderful thing for you to honor Amber and Jenny this way. Many thanks for adding to the chimpanzees’ lives and to all our lives by celebrating those who bring good to life and make our hearts happy.

Amber and Jenny, we’re so happy to have you celebrate with the chimpanzees today, especially since it’s a party day at the sanctuary for Mave, Willy B and Honey B as we celebrate their one year anniversary calling CSNW their home! We hope you both have the best of days and thank you for helping to make a difference in the chimps’ lives.

Can you believe it?!

August 17, 2020 by Katelyn

Tomorrow marks the one year anniversary of Willy B, Mave and Honey B’s arrival from their former home at Wildlife Waystation in California! Can you believe it?? Sometimes it feels like they’ve always been here, part of our family, and other times it feels as though they’ve only recently arrived. But one thing is certain, they continue to delight and surprise us daily. We are so honored to care for them, to get to know these three amazing people more and more with each passing day and provide them with as much love, comfort, joy and adventure as we can dream up. We’re just so honored that they call Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest home and are part of our chimpanzee family. And we cannot thank you all enough for making their lives here possible, and the lives of those still to come!

To those who directly cared and advocated for Willy B, Mave and Honey B during their time at Wildlife Waystation, and who continue to care for the chimpanzees still there awaiting their new sanctuary homes, thank you, we think of you every day.

Be sure to tune in tomorrow for the celebration!

Chad saved the day by graciously sharing these photos.
