Many thanks to Bryan and the Rae family for sponsoring today in celebration of Meredith Rae on her birthday!

“Happy Birthday Meredith! I hope the gang is well and can help us again celebrate Meredith’s big day! Love Bryan, Emma, Jake, and Murf.”

Meredith, all of us here hope you have the best birthday yet! Thanks to you all for choosing to include the chimpanzees in your day of celebration again and continuing to make a difference in their lives!

In memory of Elaine and Derek

November 17, 2022 by Katelyn

Many thanks to Mandy Hasdorff for sponsoring such a special day of sanctuary in honor of her parents, Elaine and Derek, for the chimpanzees!

“November 17th marks 25 years since my mum passed away. Dad passed away in August, just a few weeks after the family had celebrated his 90th birthday. I don’t have the words to express how loved and missed they are. I know Dad especially would get a chuckle out of my sponsoring a day for the chimpanzees in their honor!”

Mandy, this is such a lovely gesture and we’re so touched that you would choose to celebrate your parents in this way. Our hearts are with you and we’re sending you all the good thoughts. May your heart be full of joyful and comforting memories, just as you are helping to provide for the chimpanzees.

Today is for Mary Ann!

November 11, 2022 by Katelyn

This day of sanctuary is being sponsored by Tobin in honor of Mary Ann Karwowski:

“I have long wanted to sponsor a day of sanctuary for my old friend, Mary Ann Karwowski. I hope that today, the centennial of Kurt Vonnegut’s birth will – “so it goes” – provide as good an excuse as any to give a shout-out to her.

Soon after I learned about the CSNW and the then – seven fascinating and adorable people who lived there, I wrote Mary Ann to tell her all about the chimpeople I had discovered. After all, Mary has a lot in common with the Magnificent Seven. Like Jody, Mary has a green thumb, and like Foxie, she takes care of miniature objets d’art. Mary is a good athlete like Missy, has a great sense of humor like Burrito, and like Jamie, she is highly intelligent and is known to peruse the pages of Dwell magazine for home refurbishing ideas.

Like Queen Negra, Mary Ann had a claim to royalty: as the song goes, ‘She is the Dancing Queen…’ Finally, as Annie is to Missy, Mary Ann is a great friend to have.

And if that isn’t enough, Mary has the picture of Neggie and her sunflower positioned with pride-of-place in her office; to the Queen of the Sanctuary from the Queen of the Disco, royalty nods to royalty.”

Many thanks, Tobin, for including the chimpanzees in your celebration of Mary Ann!  Have a wonderful day, Mary Ann! All of us here send you all the good thoughts for a day filled with all that makes your heart sing.

November celebrations!

November 1, 2022 by Katelyn

November 1st. Or in Katelyn-speak, October 32nd. 🙂 While you usually have to drag me kicking and screaming out of October, this is by no means meant to take away from any and all who may be celebrating a November birthday. In fact, when you consider the incredible variety of celebrations we have this month, all of which would not be possible without you, it only adds to the magic that we get to celebrate you, too, our amazing supporters with (and without) November birthdays.

So Happy November Birthdays, friends!

This month gets right off to a festive start on November 2nd when we celebrate the fourth arrival anniversary of our tiny bovine family.

I still remember the evening Betsy, Nutmeg, Honey and Meredith were due to arrive from their former California home with their caregivers from Farm Sanctuary. As preparations were underway in the weeks ahead of their arrival, it had been growing colder by the day and winter in all her glory was due to appear any time. One couldn’t help but wonder how the cattle were going to adjust to their new mountainous home, not to mention winter. What troopers they were! And are! Just like all our California transplants who have bravely thrived in their new homes. Thanks to you.

It’s a continual joy to watch this sweet family navigate the daily happenings of their home, their rowdy neighbors, and all the new adventures that come their way. Together. Just as it should be.

Next, we celebrate dear, beautiful Lucky, who turns 31 on November 6th. Just look at her!:

Rayne (background) and Dora and Lucky wrestling:

Lucky is a quiet person who often chooses to hangout in the background (unlike her brother, Cy), but make no mistake, she is just as present. Lucky can often be found just watching the happenings from a lofty perch, sometimes waiting for you to meet her gaze at which time if you’re very lucky she might decide to swing down or scoot over on her magic carpet of blankets to sit with you in quiet companionship, or surprise you as she launches into a wild and wildly unexpected game of chase. Or, as in the case with her particularly favored humans, who upon first sight she screams at like a banshee (often at breakfast or other meals) while presenting a toe or her belly in an excited greeting (which often continues well into the meal service before she stops screaming with joy and decides to eat.) 🙂 What a privilege to have any gift of time with her. We love her so much.

Then, on November 10th, Honey Cow turns 15!

Gorgeous Honey, don’t you just want to hug her?! Yeah, well, you probably don’t want to try that, Honey is not really into hugging. And isn’t that one of the joys of sanctuary? She is beloved and cared for just because she’s Honey Cow.

Two of the most valuable things in life, things every living being wants and deserves…the freedom to be and make one’s own choices. Jersey cows like Honey certainly are rarely allowed that right and because of you, Honey and her family get to live out their days with safety, dignity and the respect of their strict no-hugging policy (unless they change their minds of course).  *Exceptions to this policy are sometimes made for scritches and brief bouts of brushing. Sometimes.

And on November 23rd, we celebrate Jody’s son, Levi, on his 39th birthday. He is the same age as Burrito. Levi was the last of the our resident chimpanzee mothers’ surviving children to make it to sanctuary. Honestly, I thought it may never happen. But after spending 33 years in biomedical research, at long last, in 2016 he and a group of 18 other chimpanzees were retired and made it safely to the amazing Chimp Haven in Louisiana. I remember what a sigh of relief it was knowing that all of Negra, Jody, Foxie, Annie and Missy’s living children were finally safe, could finally experience a different life in peace and dignity, like their mothers. We are profoundly grateful to the sanctuaries providing them wonderful homes.

This.Handsome.Guy! Happy Birthday, Levi! (photo courtesy of Chimp Haven):

Levi’s beautiful mama, Jody:

And of course, we always look forward to the chimpanzees’ and bovines’ Thanksgiving celebration on the 24th!

The contributions you make just by being here, walking alongside us and supporting the lives of those who call the sanctuary home in the myriad of ways you do continually astounds us. I hope you see the gift you are to so many. We are so grateful to, and for, you. Each of you. Have a wondrous November, all!

Happy Birthday, Jessica!

October 7, 2022 by Katelyn

Many thanks to Dr. Lori Sheeran for sponsoring this special day of sanctuary in honor of Dr. Jessica Mayhew!

“Happy Birthday to Dr. Jessica Mayhew! A friend of chimpanzees everywhere, but she is a special champion of the chimpanzees living at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest.”

Both Jessica and Lori graciously serve non-human and human primates alike with such heartfelt dedication and kindness, not only as Professors of Anthropology at Central Washington University in the Primate Behavior and Ecology Program, but also as members of the sanctuary’s Board of Directors. We are so grateful and fortunate to have them both as members of the chimpanzees’ extended family.

All of us here wish you the happiest of birthdays yet, Jessica! Have a beautiful, happy-filled day!

Happy “Jamieween” birthdays!

October 1, 2022 by Katelyn

Happy Birthday, our October reveling friends!! Personally, I’m Elphaba-green with envy of you all who get to have October birthdays.

Just past midnight, I woke out of the soundest of sleeps to Great-Horned Owls calling loudly outside my window. As if on cue, the season of Jamieween has arrived! On October 31st we will celebrate Jamie’s 45th birthday and if you’re new to the sanctuary, it’s one of the most anticipated celebrations of the year. And you never know what is going to happen (last year the reigning Great Pumpkin Thief was overthrown)!

Jamie is a kaleidoscopic force of life. She is one of the most intelligent, strong-willed, resilient, inspiring, creative, endearingly silly and sometimes, intimidatingly scary individuals I know. The details of Jamie’s childhood are somewhat murky. We do know that she spent the first nine years of her life living with a trainer. And while we can only verify her year of birth, I’m not sure a better day than Halloween could have been chosen to celebrate this amazing woman and her trick or treat ways. Despite everything she’s somehow miraculously survived in her life, she seems to have come out even stronger. Jamie knows her worth as an individual and she tolerates nothing less from those around her.

One of the things I most love about her is that you always know in no uncertain terms where you stand with her. (We’ve written about this often here on the blog, and Anthony recently described in wonderful detail what this can look like). I could not have more admiration for her and while it’s not always easy, it’s nothing short of a privilege to help provide her with a life in which she is heard, her choices matter, and she can “live spherically, in many directions.” (From a favorite Federico Fellini quote of mine).

Happy Birthday, beautiful James! How we love you.

We are profoundly grateful to each and every one of you, October celebrating or not, for being here, for making this special home for 16 chimpanzees, 4 cattle, and a feisty barn cat possible. For making Jamieween possible! Every single day you show up in a myriad of ways, all of which play an invaluable role in their lives, and our lives. You are Pals, and Buddies, you keep our shelves stocked and the chimpanzees’ bellies full, you read/like/share/comment on our posts, you sponsor days of sanctuary to include the chimps in the important days of your lives, you rally in emergencies (I mean, it’s mind-blowing), you help for a day or for years, and you are here, present, standing with us and lifting all our hearts. You are part of a community like no other, as Jenna beautifully shared recently. Please know that we celebrate every one of you every day.

And may I also share happiest of birthday wishes for two very special October celebrating people connected to all our hearts:

Annie’s beautiful daughter, Mariah, will be turning 31 on October 4th! This photo (courtesy of Save the Chimps) is like looking at a younger Annie. Save the Chimps, the Florida sanctuary Mariah thankfully gets to call home, notes on her page that she is a loyal friend…and while she is quiet and reserved, she also has a sassy streak. Moxie!! Just like her mama!

Annie:

Also gratefully residing at Save the Chimps is Negra’s son, Noah, who is turning 33 on October 19th. Good grief, does this handsome guy look like his mama or what?! Noah is noted as being happy and incredibly playful, and that no chimp or human can resist playing with him. Noah and Burrito share the same father, Mack. Mack passed away some time ago and while I didn’t know him, I can’t help but smile at the thought of this connection and their mutual bottomless pit of joyful energy.

Negra:

Wishing you all an enchanted, magical and of course, spooky Season of Jamieween! And now only 31 days until we find out the biggest question. Who will be the Great Pumpkin Thief of 2022?!
