Heartfelt thanks to long-time friend of the sanctuary, Meg Lunnun, for sponsoring a day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees and bovines and humans in celebration of your birthday! And we will happily take your wishes for a sunny day, at least in spirit. 🙂 We are so grateful for all who help keep all our lives and hearts light and joyful in so many ways.

Happy Birthday, from all of us, Meg! We hope your special day is a magical one!

Happy Birthday, Rosalie!

January 30, 2023 by Katelyn

Our sincere gratitude to Timothy Allen for sponsoring a day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees in honor of his wife, Rosalie Allen, on her birthday!

“In honor of Rosalie Allen – Supporter of Non-Human Rights. Rosalie is a passionate supporter of the Sanctuary and other animal sanctuaries in the USA and worldwide. She taught music for many years and currently directs the Handbell Choir at her church. She loves the CSNW blog and enjoys sharing the antics of the Chimpanzees with her husband, who is sponsoring this day as a Birthday Present. She loves the work you do and appreciates all of the wonderful humans who work there.”

Happy Birthday from all of us here, Rosalie! Thank you for all you do to bring beauty and compassion to the lives of others. We are so thrilled to have you both as members of the chimpanzees’ extended friends and family. We truly appreciate all that you help make possible in their lives. We hope you’re having a wonderful day of celebration and appreciate you sharing your special day with us!

For the staff and volunteers of CSNW

January 23, 2023 by Katelyn

…and might I add, our incredibly special supporters. <3 Hearts full of gratitude to the Hughes sisters, Donna and Doreen, and their hearts, spirits and legacies from which they make a difference in so many lives.

“Today is my birthday. It has been bittersweet the last 4 years since my twin sister Doreen is no longer with us. However, I know she would want me to celebrate by Sponsoring A Day. What better way to do this than to honor the staff & volunteers at CSNW. We had the pleasure of visiting the Sanctuary in 2017 and there have been so many exciting changes since then. I know Doreen would be so thrilled over the new residents who arrived after the Cle Elum 7. It’s always hard work running such an amazing Sanctuary, but imagine what the staff (and when the volunteers could return) went through during the pandemic. Yet the Apes continued to live their best lives. It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and love. And the staff & volunteers do it. Every day. I know Doreen’s spirit is still enjoying the spirit of the Sanctuary. You guys are so generous with all of us, sharing the blog posts and amazing photos of these remarkable individuals. Loved the recent video of Burrito and the stuffed toy …and Gordo, looking for something good to read. We sponsor Foxie every year, but LOVE each and every one of the Apes (and cows!) I know that everyone will THANK the staff & volunteers who make this place so special for all of the Apes.”

Thank you so much for your kind thoughts and for including us all on this special day, Donna. Happy Birthday! You and Doreen continue to bring a lot of magic to the world; we think of you and celebrate you often. You both are, and will remain, such special members of the chimpanzees’ extended family. While we know the day may feel a bittersweet one, may it also bring comfort, joy and Foxie-style shenanigans of some sort to both your wonderful spirits.

Happy Birthday, Burrito!!

January 6, 2023 by Katelyn

Burrito is 40 years old today! We are so grateful to Paulette Wrisley for sponsoring this day of sanctuary in honor of her Pal!

“This is the birthday of My One and Only True Love Valentine Burrito! Is it just me, or does Burrito just get happier and sillier as he gets older? And that just makes me happier and sillier too! He and all of the others and all of you are just such a joy and a blessing. Let’s ALL have a happy birthday with Burrito!”

A gift, a delight and an inspiration (and a workout!) every second of every day that we are so fortunate to spend with you. Happy Birthday, Bubbie!!! We love you so very much!!

January tidings and hoorahs!

January 1, 2023 by Katelyn

Happy Birthday, to our January celebrating friends! And Happy New Year, all! If you’re not still wearing them, you better dig out your party pants for this month!

It seems apropos that we burst into each new year by celebrating Burrito! Our beloved chimp guy with (at least) nine lives and full of ever-increasing energizer-bunny-energy of epic proportions, is turning 40 on January 6th!

Because of you all being part of some miraculous fate we’re profoundly grateful for, overcoming adversity in life and coming out the other side (again and again) full of even more wild joy and well-being seems to be Burrito’s superpower. Seeing the love that has ensconced Burrito through all his ups and downs has been nothing short of awe-inspiring and I believe all our hearts have been given the sheer gift and fortune of being buoyed along in his effervescent wake.

Such sentiments often sound trite, but I believe Burrito reminds us it’s always possible (even when it might feel as though it’s not) to find something to celebrate, no matter how small. We can’t wait for his special day. And we all better start stretching…

A Bubbie blur…

Then, on January 29th, we get to celebrate dear, beautiful, regal, Rayne, who will be turning 33!

This will be Rayne’s second birthday since calling the sanctuary her home and we’re so honored to celebrate the special individual she is. The privilege of getting to know Rayne and her group more each day, learning from them, and trusting in their strength, resiliency, wisdom, and capacity for joy, is a gift to us all.

Look at this glorious woman!

Rayne and Willy B:

As Sofia (and Dora!) marveled over yesterday, it’s incredible all that YOU have made possible in the chimpanzees’ and bovines’ lives in the last year. I mean, truly.

Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest will be celebrating our 15th anniversary this summer, can you believe it?! If you ever pause to wonder why and what if this or what if that, as we humans are all wont to do at various times in our lives, please just shift your gaze for a moment into the faces and lives of the 20 incredible individuals who call the sanctuary their home and remind yourself what you have been, and are, an invaluable part of creating. We’re immensely honored and grateful to you for being here and we can’t wait to walk through this next year and all those forward, together.

May your birthdays and year ahead mirror back to you all your hearts have so graciously shared. Happy Birthday, human friends, and Happy New Year!

For the CSNW humans

December 31, 2022 by Katelyn

Our sincere thanks to Colleen Walford for sponsoring this day of sanctuary in honor of the humans of the sanctuary!

“In honor of the staff and volunteers at Chimpanzee Sanctuary NW for all their work in 2022. It is such a pleasure to read about the chimps and see their pictures. Thanks for all the hard work by the staff and volunteers in sharing sanctuary life and events with your followers.”

Thank you for your kind thoughts and words, Colleen, it means to much. We so appreciate you (and all our amazing supporters) for being here with us and the chimpanzees. You make sanctuary possible. And I know I speak for everyone here when I say it’s an honor caring for all the amazing individuals who call the sanctuary home.

In memory of Stephen and Kathleen Hero

December 24, 2022 by Katelyn

Our heartfelt gratitude to Caroline Hero and her family for sponsoring this day of sanctuary in memory of their parents, Stephen and Kathleen Hero.

“Christmas has always been a special time for our family, so the loss of our parents is most deeply felt during the holidays. They taught us love and respect for the World and all of it’s creatures, and though they are gone now, they are always in our hearts, not just on this special day, but on every day of the year. I know that they loved and respected the work you are doing for the family at Cle Elum and would be honored to celebrate this day with the chimps. Thank you all for everything you do every day of the year. A very Merry Christmas to you all! Forever in our hearts.”

This is really lovely, Caroline. We are so sorry for your family’s loss and understand how this time of year in particular can illuminate the space left from loved ones we’ve lost. Your parents sound like such wonderful humans and may this special season also continue to illuminate all your hearts hold for them. Thank you so much for including the chimpanzees and bovines in your special memories of them and for choosing to honor Stephen and Kathleen’s legacy in this way. Merry Christmas Eve, from all of us here!
