An Apple A Day Keeps The Smoke Away

September 15, 2020 by Chad de Bree

As you may know, the entire West Coast of the United States is covered in smoke. But today, there was some reprieve. If I were a person who believed adages, I think it would be the one with apples. As the saying goes,” An apple a day keeps the smoke away,” or something to the like.

Regardless, the sky was clearer today than it has been the past few. So much so, the chimpanzees were able to enjoy a considerable amount of time outside.

Foxie took her morning serving of apples to go and enjoy the outdoors.

Missy also took her breakfast to go. But before she made her rounds around Young’s Hill, she had to try to take a peek at her neighbors.

Later on during the day, Foxie took Strawberry Shortcake and Orange Blossom for a walk around the Hill.

I couldn’t decide which photo to include, so I’m just going to include both.

Afterward, she decided it was a good time for a nap.

Burrito also had his apples for the day. For lunch, he was given an apple, which he became really excited about.

Burrito still continues to recover from his incident. His enthusiasm and energy could deceive anybody that anything had ever happened to him. We are hoping the day comes soon when he will be reunited with his family.

This next photo I just wanted to share for the sake of sharing it. I took it on Sunday. Willy B and Mave were over the smoke and construction. So we decided to give them one of their favorite enrichment items.

Firehose Cubes!

I probably have blabbered on long enough. As I was closing up the different areas of the Chimp House, I found Mave like this two minutes ago.

She’s more than likely waiting for me to turn off the lights and lock the doors so she can get some sleep. So I will oblige and let her and everyone else get some sleep.

Good night, everybody!

I live in Cincinnati, Ohio very near the Ohio River. I can see Kentucky from my front porch. We were very hazy this morning due to smoke from the western wildfires! It was quite incredible to see. Stay safe!

Hi Deb…Maybe if we stood on our individual rooftops, we could see each other’s property, as we’re not too far from one another…As I was listening to Spectrum News early yesterday, I was pretty stunned to learn how our own part of the country (seemingly so far away from the western wildfires) had hazy skies due to all the smoke…I really love Nature & the outdoors, & I can’t help but think about all the peaceful & innocent wildlife that are perishing as well…My heart is so heavy with sadness over all that’s been lost, & it still isn’t over…

Some years ago I moved back to Cincinnati from Los Angeles (which I dearly loved back then) because of the frequent earthquakes…Suffered considerable damage during the Northridge earthquake & after shocks, but can’t remember ever having been at any risk from wildfires…My heart really hurts for EVERYONE involved…including all the firemen & law enforcement…

You may not believe this but the western smoke is effecting our skies back in NY! For the past three days we’ve had a high glaze of smoke clouds, slightly blocking the sun and casting a strange light. I am happy to hear your air quality was good enough for the gang go outside today. Happier still to learn Mr. B is doing so well. Thanks for “blabbing on” Chad (as if), enjoyed every word and every photo.

It’s such good news that Burrito is doing better and better and that Chimps were able to get out and enjoy today.

Great photos! Especially the last one. Mave looks exactly like I feel as I worry
about the fires and the upcoming election…..
Let’s all stay safe, in every way….

I second your (e)motion. Only 48 days away…I feel as if our lives are all on hold until then.

I love Mave’s face so much (no matter the expression; although this one is really wonderful). And I agree with everyone who said, there is no such thing as a caregiver giving too much information or sharing photos of your 14 charges. Thank you for all that you do and stay safe (everyone).

I absolutely LOVE that photo of Mave!!! Have you ever considered, and maybe you have done this already but take some of these exceptional photos and have them printed on canvas and either sell or put those up for auction???

First thank you for the continued updates on sweet precious Burrito, he always warms my heart and brings a big smile to my face but if he is not doing well I am just brokenhearted so Burrito please keep getting better so you can be reunited with your family very soon.
It is always so fantastic to see all of the chimps enjoying their daily activities, I would have to agree that an apple a day is just a good thing 🙂 I was just cracking up at Willy B and Mave, they truly did look done with it all, if they could just speak our language they would have much to say.
Sending love to all and praying for rain
