Grooming with Cy and George

November 24, 2025 by Ellen Brady-McGaughey

Cy and George continue to live together as we move forward with integrating George into Cy’s group. In case you missed it, we have been in the process of day-long introductions with the remaining members of Cy’s group (Gordo, Terry, Rayne, and Lucky have already had theirs) as well as Mave before we continue with building up the group around Cy and George.

In today’s blog video, come along for grooming session with George and Cy!

Waching Cy’s eyes, he seems to be checking George’s reaction. Am I seeing that part of this complex social interaction that is grooming?

Cy is so sweet to George! All of us here in Oregon are so thankful that George finally has such a wonderful home, and now can experience life-long relationships and enrichment. It is a joy to watch. Thank you!

When grooming, what is the chimp looking for and eating?. What is Cy looking for hidden in George’s hair and skin?

They do like to pick an eat the scab from a healing sore!

“If this is what freedom’s about, groom away!” ~ George :joy::joy::joy:?

Is Dora involved in the introductions?

The look of resignation on George’s face is priceless! He’s come on so well since he found his forever home with you…..I don’t suppose you got much information about him, so you can’t work out some of his like and dislikes, but he’s learning fast.
Yes, I thought of Dora too…..I thought she was an obvious choice, but you must have other thoughts???

He teuly does look like “sigh…if you must….”. And looking to see what the caregivers are thinking of this…

It seems as if it would be a strange and awkward experience to be groomed by someone you aren’t familiar with, especially if you haven’t lived within a group. The trust involved to allow another to be so close and personal! Dear Cy was ever so gentle grooming George’s face. Appeared to be a spa treatment. Still, I couldn’t help but follow George’s eyes. His eye movements reminded me of being at the dentist or doctors office when know you are receiving necessary care but you sort of just want it to be over!

Exactly what I was thinking re: George’s eyes. A couple of times early in the video his eyes became relaxed and almost like he might doze, just for a second or two. That darting around reminded me of the dentist’s office as well…. Cy you’re a hero and George keep listening to your mentor!

George definitely looks like he’s being held captive! At least he’s a good sport about it. I know he’ll get a hang of this whole “grooming” business eventually! He couldn’t have a better and more patient teacher, either!

Ellen, I’m not sure if you can answer this or not, but did it take Jamie and Burrito time to get into the grooming groove? (asking since they have similar pasts).

George’s eyes did say, “I’d rather be anywhere but here.” He did fold his arms together at some point for a bit.
These things noted, I did see a somewhat relaxed George as Cy was grooming. Not reciprical this time.
Cy is a patient, gentle leader; I have such respect for him.
