Lucky Honey B

September 19, 2023 by Chad de Bree 12 Comments

If you have been following the blog recently, you probably have seen the videos of Honey B and Lucky playing hooky during cleaning to spend some time together. To my recollection, I remember during the introduction process they would play with each other, but when the full integration commenced, I haven’t really seen them together. But lately, with their play sessions while playing hooky, I began to wonder if there was a friendship we were completely glossing over.

Since the day when Anna posted the video of them playing in the front rooms, I began watching them a little more closely. Here is what I have noticed:

  • Honey B and Lucky do have some pretty epic play sessions. These play sessions aren’t exclusive to just holding out when caregivers are shifting the group. (I should have noticed this when I posted the video of Honey B literally pulling Lucky into an ongoing play session she was in with Rayne.)
  • During conflicts, Honey B has been seeking Lucky out first and foremost for reassurance, which Lucky always gives her. When the conflicts are over, they reconnect and groom (or play).
  • During some downtime, they can be found grooming with each other

On the surface, this may seem like an odd pairing. On one hand, there is Honey B. Somewhat social. Not afraid to be scrappy with anybody. Loves to play. On the other hand, there is Lucky. Mostly found by herself. Isn’t too involved during conflicts. And only plays when she feels like it (though as mentioned before, Honey B seems to be her ticket). At the same time, this pairing makes sense in a weird way. There is a meme out there that says, “Introverts don’t make friends. They get adopted by extroverts.”  I’m not saying Lucky is fully introverted or that Honey B is fully extroverted, because they’re not. On some level to me though, this seems to be what is happening.

I’m not entirely sure when this budding friendship started, or even if it will last. I am, however, a person who likes to take time to just relish the now and I am all for this friendship pair. They are, in fact, two rockin’ sisters!

Here are some bonus photos!

Annie on Young’s Hill

Annie made a stop at Jody’s burial site this morning

Foxie in the morning

Gordo during breakfast and lunch

Dora helping herself to some of Honey B’s nightbag (Only Dora is allowed to get away with this!)

Lucky in the Riverview Greenhouse

Jamie on her morning patrol (That is a Troll doll in her hand! She is playing a game of keep away with Foxie)

During their morning patrol, Jamie, Missy, and Burrito would stop to eat the greenest of grass patches

Burrito!

A patch of bamboo beginning to grow in between Young’s Hill and The Bray

Lastly, a pair of unidentified track outside the top of Young’s Hill! We are unsure of who made these tracks, but we suspect maybe a badger?

It appears that Dr. Beezus is putting her new veterinary degree to good use, conducting a stretching exercise on her patient and, near the end of the exam, finding a hat for her to wear.

Ah, dear Annie…I never stop missing and remembering your dear friend. I continue to pray that those who mourn may be comforted.

“Together alone”. 2 introverts who occasionally enjoy some time together.
Lucky, I’m so happy you’re coming out of your shell, but don’t let Beezus fully take you to The Dark Side, the Land of Obstinance and Filth!

Thanks for the beautiful pics of beautiful Annie!

I couldn’t be happier for the two of them! I am especially happy for Lucky. After watching the videos included within your post, one thing is certain, Lucky really loves to laugh with Honey B.

Thanks for sharing your BFF in the making observations, Chad. I hope this is the beginning of a wonderful friendship.

And another thank you for all these fabulous bonus photos!

My oh my, before i go back to finish the blig, all that came to mind was the lyrucs to a vefy old song, “How long has this been going on?
Well, our friends with their fancy persuasion
Don’t admit that it’s part of a scheme,
But I can’t help but have my suspicions, for I aint as dumb as I seem.
How long has this been going on.”

How do the chimps know where Jody is buried?

      Hi Ellen,

It’s very difficult to impossible to know what they are thinking or if they actually know that is the spot where Jody’s body lies. So we are not exactly sure why they keep visiting that area. The only facts we do know for sure is that Jody’s body is buried there and her group will occasionally visit that area with no outside influence (i.e. food, enrichment, etc).

Lucky and Honey B are so cute playing together! I wonder if being friends with Lucky might give Honey B the confidence to start venturing outside. It’s so good to see them playing together.
Do you all think that the group recognizes that Jody rests in that spot now? It seems from the blogs like they seem to understand it’s a special place.

      Hi Eli,

It’ hard to say if they know the significance of that area. There’s no solid indication they know that is where Jody’s body is since they weren’t there to witness her being laid to rest and it’s somewhat difficult to see that area from their greenhouse. It is, however, very intriguing they frequent that spot with no influence/motivator other than to just seemingly hang around there for a moment or two.

Hi CHAD, i forwarded the photo from a recent blog showing animal tracks at the property to a friend in Portland who teaches animal tracking for Cascadia Wild in Oregon and Washington. The concensus is yes, that is badger. i suppose if the chimps spotted it there would be quite a big alarm HOOT. And if you ever turn up wolverine tracks the enture tracking team would race to Cle Elum.

I love animal tracks and prints!!! i have a ton!! I love this friendship between Lucky and Honey b! Honey being so social, makes me sad she was in such a small family group for so long… makes me that much more happy and grateful that she has an expanded family group now!!!
