Foraging

August 20, 2021 by J.B.

Now that it’s cooled off a bit, the chimps in Negra’s group are spending a little more time on the hill. We started the day with a breakfast forage, which lured Negra out of her nest and into the great outdoors.

After spending a considerable amount of time foraging, she decided to take the remainder of her breakfast to go and made her way back to the comfort of her greenhouse nest.

Burrito and Jamie also stuffed their mouths with fruit, including apples from our very own orchard that Diana picked the other night.

This is a good example of why we don’t forage all of the chimps’ meals – there’s just no controlling how much each will get! There’s a good chance Jamie’s got some food in her feet as well. I guess it takes a lot of calories to fuel all those walks around the hill.

Missy, who will turn 46 on Monday, set out to demonstrate that age has no bearing one’s athletic abilities.

Jody agreed, adding that she had never been very athletic, even when she was younger.

Nevertheless, she eventually made it to the top of Negra’s cabin to search for more treats.

Annie sought a bird’s eye view of the action.

Later, Jamie, Burrito, Missy, and I went for a walk around the hill, stopping momentarily to reenact the scene from the original Charlie’s Angels poster.

For a short while, Burrito led the way. Nothing keeps this guy down for long.

Jody caught up to us at the top of the hill, but broke away soon after to snack on a few wild rose hips.

We have a quick favor to ask: The chimps are once again running low on blankets, so we’d love it if you would consider donating a few from our wish list. Annie would be most grateful…and so would we! (Edit 8/21: The blankets have all been purchased off of our wish list – thank you all!)

Thanks for the info, Cynthia. My gift is now on the way to the chimps, and a % of its cost is also going here. And from all my many forthcoming orders.
And, yes, JB, good post today. Great photos. Nice to see the original 7.

Running low again on blankets? Hmm…could this be the end result of my Chimpanzee Pal’s prostidigious shredding of the sanctuary’s cache of bedsheets? From the look on the face of Annie, the once-and-future Princess and the Pea, I am inclined to suspect as much.

It is pure joy to reconnect with the Cle Elum Seven on Young’s Hill. it is thrilling to see how wild and free they are in this beautiful setting with the grass underfoot and the blue sky above. it’s as it should be for all captive chimps. the blog was spectacular! thanks so much.

You are a funny man J.B., Great reenactment with Burrito as stand-in for fierce Foxie, definately one of the original Angels.
Great to see them all ( Negra too!!!) out and about.

J.B. you always cause me to let out a big gaffaw when reading your posts, today did not disappoint. The Charlie’s Angels poster reference killed me. I am surprised that you didn’t make a comment on Jamie’s unique Unicorn bedhead hairdo today. If Jamie’s hands (and feet) weren’t so full of goodies I am sure she would have taken the time to slick down the “Alfalfa” sprout on the top of her head! I’d also like to note that while Jody may not excell in athletics she sure can out forage everyone. If there were an Olympic category she’d win the gold every time.

Oh how I enjoy seeing the Spectacular Seven out on Young’s Hill, especially when the grasses are glowing golden. I’ve missed seeing them. Thanks for all these photos today. This is the perfect season for western states. I wish I was there.

And once again your supporters are the best in the world. As always, by the time I dashed over to your Amazon WIsh List there was not a single blanket to be found. Annie will be thrilled!

Kathleen, I didn’t even notice the Alfafa hair when it posted, because I was out watching the ocean, trying to chill out. Your comment made me go back and look at it again. I loved the Charlie’s Angels reference, too!

Even though I told myself that after the auction and the rocker I have to cool it with donations until I get my housing straightened out, I also went to the list for blankets..and even though I could have sworn I was one of the first 5 readers, they were mostly gone by then!
We are a fast and lovely bunch of souls here!
