Drowsy Thursday

August 19, 2021 by Anna

Yesterday we concluded the first round of one on one introductions so today we took another break from all the afternoon action. We have a flexible plan for slowly moving forward with introductions, focusing on who needs more time together in one on one situations and who can meet together in slightly larger two on two intros.  As we’ve hopefully expressed before, intros are exciting but stressful for the chimps as well as the caregivers. It was nice to take a moment to breath and think about other projects that need to be worked on around here.

For Dora, Rayne and Negra, napping was at the top of their to do list this afternoon.  Just try not to be too jealous as you look at these photos.

Just wondering about how much chimps in general sleep each day? For example cats sleep 12 to 16 hours a day.

I’ve often wondered the same….and how it compares to chimps in the wild. same question with playing

I had to google it to give you a concrete answer and they sleep about 9.67–11.5 hours a day which seems about right. They nap a bit more than I do 🙂

I enjoy watching the Chimps taking naps. Especially with their eyes shut. They look so at peace.

It’s always made me chuckle when I see Negra in her nests. My grandmother used to nap in the same position — on her side with a blanket pulled up over her and covering her head while she peeked out. A darling pose for both of them! Thanks for the info on upcoming introductions and pairings. I’m glad it’s gone relatively smoothly so far and in some cases really well.

aw… li’l miss aDORAble depressed over Willy B? Hang in there Dora! He’ll come around. you’re just too scrumptious to ignore.

I can relate Negra! (I aspire to her lifestyle.)

And Rayne made me sleepy just watchin her succumb.

I hope the caregivers got some well deserved rest as well. Thank you for everything!

So sweet how they are all looking right at you. Even Neggie. Tom said it best, those eye lids are heavy. I hope you all manage to get some well earned shut eye tonight too. Sweet dreams everyone!

I always wondered how you single them out to get them to transfer to where you want?

It takes a lot of juggling and sorting but we try to offer them food in different areas and close doors until we have the right chimp in the right room. It’s particulary challenging when we are doing intros with chimps like Dora that don’t seem to spend time away from the other chimps in her group. Cy on the other hand thinks he should be in EVERY intro so it becomes quite the challenge.
