As some of you have read yesterday, Foxie went through a medical exam. Going under anesthesia can take a lot out of a chimpanzee, but Foxie is fierce and strong despite her small stature. By the time dinner was ready yesterday, Foxie was up, alert, eating, and ready to go back to her family. We decided to keep her by herself overnight just in case. When we arrived to the sanctuary in the morning, it was clear she was more than ready to go back with the group.
The first person to greet her was Jody of course! And since then, they have almost virtually been inseparable.
Jody made sure that for most of the day, Foxie was within eyesight or earshot of Foxie. It’s hard to see, but if you look closely between the ladder and the pillar at the top of the platform, you can see a little fuzz of a shoulder. That’s Foxie! With Jody resting right below her of course!
Jody was available nearby in case Foxie needed her. It’s hard to tell in this photo, but Jody (front) is keeping an eye on Foxie (back).
Foxie and Jody have such as strong bond with one another. It’s one relatively not talked about much as say Missy and Annie. They continuously motivate each other, lookout for each other, and just genuinely enjoy each other’s company.
May you find yourself the Foxie to your Jody or the Jody to your Foxie in life.
Bonus photos of Annie performing her famous “bird calls” and Negra peering out onto Young’s Hill after hearing the cattle call for Anthony for their daily care.
So happy to hear that Foxie is feeling better. It’s always nice to have a friend close by.
Good ol’ Jo…
Thanks, Chad. Fingers aren’t coming uncrossed til results come back.
Jody is true blue. Lucky Foxie. And thanks for the bonus photos. Like Linda said, not coming uncrossed til results come back.
Just wanted to add in a special “Thank you” for the links all of you take the time to include within your writings. I always enjoy going back to reread the adventure. I especially enjoy revisiting older posts I had forgotten about like one you included today — “Tiny’s Big Adventure” from Katelyn from back in 2018. I remember this post so well, cheering on incredibly brave Foxie as she climbed to the tippy top of the Twister and then back down. It melted my heart back then and again when I read it today. It’s the ending (below) that takes the air out of my lungs in the most beautiful way :
“But when you consider the very small world in which Foxie, and all the chimps, lived for so long and that every ounce of their courage was needed just to get through each day, to get through the most unimaginable of losses, it’s nothing short of miraculous to see the healing and leaps of bravery that continue to occur almost ten years later. And it makes your heart burst right out of your chest seeing all their innate courage finally getting to be used to expand and enrich their world, their hearts and their spirits in whichever way is meaningful to them.” ~ Katelyn
Now look at the chimps today. Look at how the chimps lives have expanded! I can’t begin to thank all of you enough. Fourteen beings have expanded their lives ten-fold thanks to you, now they live their lives as they choose. I have no words to express the significance of this reality. But my heart swells.
Beautifully said, Kathleen – to see that in one small corner of the world, these animals are loved and respected. Thank you
“Though she be but little, she is fierce.”
So glad little Foxie is feeling better.
We’ll just take it one day at a time 🙂
Good to see these two good friends strolling in the sunshine. Every day, your
emails remind me that they are such amazing creatures with complex emotions.
I love seeing their faces-there is so much going on!
