Sanctuary nesting

August 7, 2018 by Anna

In free-living situations, chimpanzees build night nests in the forest canopy. They make these platform-like nests out of branches and leaves. At the sanctuary, most of the chimps build nests out of the fresh clean blankets that caregivers set out for them each morning after we finish scrubbing and squeegeeing their enclosures. Our trusty washing machine works overtime all day, everyday, as we wash the previous day’s 70 dirty blankets! Since there is no threat from a predator at the sanctuary, the chimpanzees can choose wherever they like (high or low) to build their nests. Interestingly enough, I’ve never seen the chimps nest out on Young’s Hill, so they must feel (understandably) that the added security of the covered enclosures is better suited for lounging in bed. In addition to blankets, the Cle Elum 7 will also incorporate other enrichment items such as toys or natural fibers like hay and grass. The other night I watched Negra eating some cattails in the center of her evening bed. After getting her fill, she tucked them for safe keeping into the folds of her nest. Midnight snack perhaps?

On scorching hot days like today, the chimps find cool places to nest in the shady indoor areas. Here’s Jamie beating the heat in a fresh nest she chose to build on the playroom floor:

Summer moments

August 6, 2018 by Katelyn

Nothing says summertime like hanging out in a hammock with your best friend (Annie and Missy):

…or exploring (Missy):

Foxie:

…or just relaxing and taking in the view:

Annie:

…or, one of my personal favorites, napping in a cool breeze (Burrito):

When You Walk In

August 5, 2018 by Kelsi

Mornings are some of my favorite times at the sanctuary. Usually everyone is happy and playful (playful can also lead to excitement, which can lead to displaying), however, there is lots of breathy panting and kissing which can just make your heart melt with happiness. Most mornings I can hear Missy ripping around on the second level of the Playroom with Annie – or she puts a blanket over her head (ghost Missy) and wrestles with Annie – Jamie throws a boot for you to put on and then breaks into chase, Negra is often still in bed enjoying the warmth of the Greenhouse, Foxie is stomping around or can also be found soaking up the warm sunshine in the Greenhouse, and Burrito bursts into games of chase that turn into grooming and kissing. There is often a lot of grooming and silly play going on with all the chimps. Sometimes I love when I come into the Chimp House and they don’t even know humans are there yet and it’s calm, quiet, and you can see some sleepy chimpanzees still in bed, though most really already do know you are there, but are too tired to get up quite yet.

Chimpanzees and Cattails?

August 4, 2018 by Diana

The Cle Elum Seven chimpanzees and their relationship with cattails goes way back. In fact, I can’t think about cattails without thinking about Burrito covered in cattail fluff way back in 2008.

We have a couple of big ponds and some wetland areas around the property and the cattails look just beautiful right now, so Anna chopped some down to add to the chimps lunch forage on the hill today.

Jody in particular likes fresh cattails and she eats both the long green leaves and the brown flowers that remind me of corn dogs. After foraging for the lunch veggies, Jody collected as many cattails as her mouth could carry and headed for the greenhouse.

Meanwhile, Negra had the escher structure to herself and was enjoying all of the food I had scattered from top to bottom.

In fact, Negra climbed up higher than I’ve ever seen her go before!

Today, Negra brought a friend with her on her adventures – a green-haired Strawbery Shortcake doll.

After a good long time foraging, Negra too went back to the greenhouse. When she spotted Jody’s cattails, she decided she should take a couple. Being the Queen, Jody allowed this theft to happen.

Negra really has been a new chimpanzee lately. Not the food-stealing – that’s been part of her repertoire for a while, but climbing up high and staying out on the hill for a long time is new. She’s also been very playful with us caregivers. There is absolutely nothing better in this world than seeing Negra laugh and be happy and relaxed. She just continues to remind us that everyone grows into themselves on their own timescale. Welcome to the sanctuary, New Negra.

The Sound of Celery

August 3, 2018 by J.B.

Volunteers always tell us that watching the chimps enjoy their meals makes them want to eat healthier. Would you try the Chimp Diet? For the Cle Elum Seven, that means mostly whole fruits and vegetables, unprocessed nuts and seeds, and fresh edible weeds like prickly lettuce and dandelions. Oh, and if you’re Negra, the occasional wild frog…

Watch (and listen!) to Negra enjoying her celery, cucumber and sweet potato lunch (don’t worry, no frogs in this video).

Play wrestling on a summer afternoon

August 2, 2018 by Elizabeth

Our heat wave is over (for the moment), it’s warm and breezy, and it’s the kind of day when you just want to wrestle and laugh with your friends.

Keeping the fridge full!

August 1, 2018 by Anna

Did you know that an easy way to support the chimpanzees’ health and happiness is to help us keep their fridge stocked? The chimps require a constant supply of fresh and diverse produce to keep them full and enriched! We get an amazing weekly donation of fresh fruit and veggies courtesy of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products and we supplement the delivery by purchasing additional food from our local grocery store. If you would like to help fill the chimp’s fridge, check out our Amazon Wish List and you can easily send us a Safeway gift card by clicking the available link on our list!

Many happy food grunts to our supporters from Negra, Missy, Jody, Jamie, Foxie, Annie and Burrito!
