Most Vigilant Person

October 18, 2011 by Debbie

I am officially giving the MVP award to Foxie, who has been making it farther and farther everyday on Young’s Hill. She’s gotten some encouragement and motivation from her friends, but today I put out some pieces of pineapple as a forage, and that seemed to be enough incentive for her to make it almost twice as far as she’s gone in the last few weeks! She made it almost all the way to the first platform. Yay, Foxie!

Good for Foxie, what a sweet photo. How about some troll dolls out on the platform?! Thank you, Debbie

Marcia, Foxie really loves her troll dolls and if she sees one that is far away but isn’t completely comfortable with heading out that far, she might become stressed that she can’t reach them. So, we want Foxie to do things at her own pace without too much pressure. Hopefully one day we’ll be putting trolls on the hill and Foxie will be totally comfortable walking right out to get them!

I can’t imagine how scary this must be for her. Congrats, Foxie, on making big strides each day. Before you know it, you’ll be hanging off the platform in the sun with the breeze blowing in your face!

This may sound a little goofy, but I think the chimps are looking a little different these days. Ever since they went out onto the hill, they look happier or maybe it’s the light that makes them look different. Like this photo of Foxie she looks more mature, but cute.

Candy, I think there’s something to this. I’ve noticed a few small changes in the chimps, for instance Jody seems more playful than she was before. It’ll be great to look back on this time and say “remember when the chimps were…” because they will have changed! We’ve been joking that seeing the Cle Elum 7 out on the hill makes them looks more like “real chimps.” Obviously they are real chimps, but I think the thought is that seeing them running around (literally, running!) and being where there’s tall grass and other vegetation seems like more where they belong. It’s the closest thing to freedom they’ve ever had. Don’t get me wrong though—they still really love their indoor areas and “unnatural” enrichment, like trolls! But sanctuary is all about choice, and now they have the choice of staying inside if they’d like, or venturing out onto grass and having open sky above them.

Foxie will explore the hill in her own time I think. As much as we want to see her out there she has needs the time to do it when she is comfortable.
