Sometimes you need a little push

October 3, 2011 by Debbie

We know that some of the chimps seem completely comfortable with Young’s Hill, especially Missy, as well as Jamie. Annie has gotten more brave with help from Missy, and Burrito and Negra have ventured out for a little bit, too. Jody and Foxie are more hesitant and have only been a few feet past the raceway tunnel. Today, Jamie encouraged both of them to come out further and even hugged Foxie and guided her along.

Thank you, Jamie, for taking such loving care of your friends. With help from their friends, they will be coming out more easily soon. Thanks, Debbie.

Oh that is just so awesome and sweet to see. More tears!! What a friend. I loved seeing Jody finally come along after Jamie took Foxie under her wing. It is SOOOO happening! It is hard to believe and yet it almost feels like they have been out forever! Does that make sense to anybody else?

Marie, I was thinking the same thing, about Annie, I wonder if maybe the grass is a little wet and she doesn’t want to get her hands dirty. I’ve noticed she’s walked out this way a few times now.

There’s not doubting it, Jamie’s a good alpha female and leader. I noticed Foxie with her baby troll, maybe place some of her favorite trolls out on the hill, within her vision, of course. How about placing some of Jody’s favorite blankets for a possible nest, which brings up my next questions, anyone made a nest, out on the hill, yet?

Candy, the staff talked about placing some troll’s on the hill to encourage Foxie to get out onto the hill. It was decided not to do this becasue Foxie is very possessive when it comes to her troll’s. She becomes very upset when she see’s a troll she want’s and can’t get to it. The staff didn’t want the hill to be a source of frustration or anxiety to any of the chimps. The staff thought it best to let the chimps decide on their own when they would go out onto the hill. On the first day Foxie went out with a troll in foot, she went all the way around the two acre enclosure all by her self, once she was finished she went back in the greenhouse and decided that was a safe place and has had a hard time getting back out. She may have overwhelmed herself the first day and just decided she would take her time going back out again. This has been a great transition for some of the “7” and as with anything we all go at our own pace. It is good to see Foxie and Jojo out on the hill and the kindness shown by the “7” towards each other during this time has been heartwarming to say the least.

Denice – I love what you wrote. That’s one of the definitions of sanctuary: to give back to animals control over their own lives and the ability to make their own choices. Brilliant!

That is so sweet of Jaime to offer encouragement to Foxie and Jody! It is great seeing them come out, even if it’s just for a little. It will be so amazing to see where they are a year from now when we’ll look back on these days and be amazed that any of them were fearful.

The other chimps are lucky to have a thoughtful alpha female like Jaime.

I am so proud of Foxie and Jody and am full of admiration for Jamie. She is so tender as a leader in helping them to feel secure. Great job! I have to say that watching Annie walk out makes me giggle every single time. I hold my breath with aniticipation, then laugh & cry at every picture and video. Thank you so much for bringing this to us.

i was thinking just what a massive thing this all is for the 7 , i was comparing them to Pacito a chimp at monkey world who was living chained up in a tiny filthy room in Spain before he was rescued , it took him a year to properly venture outside and as he was only 7 when he was rescued imagine what its like after decades 🙁
