Hill grass

October 20, 2011 by Jackie

Grass has always been a favorite treat for the Cle Elum Seven, so it’s been interesting to watch their reactions to the grass on Young’s Hill.

Annie loves to eat grass, but seems very uncomfortable walking on it. I’ve been referring to her as our resident gibbon- she walks bipedally and holds her hands out a bit from her sides and her gait is almost more of a waddle than a walk. I can’t say exactly why she does this, but I’m sure it feels strange to walk barefoot on grass after years and years of nothing but concrete.

Jamie, on the other hand, is a natural out there.

And how fun is it to harvest your own treat!?

The last pic says it all. Cool, calm relaxed and oh so happy to either be walkimg on it or just enjoying munching on the perfect blade of grass.

    Excellent pics Jacke!!

Oh I love the picture of Jamie and Missy feasting side by side! It is so cute how they are nestled up to one another. I do love the annie walk. Too cute! But the last picture of Jamie with that blade of grass and a cross between a smile and a smirk says it all….. “Life is good!”
    Thanks Jackie.

Thank you for these wonderful photos—all delightful. Yes, grass must be a strange sensation in the beginning. Martha at Chimp Eden had a heartbreaking reaction to grass when she first went out in it. I’m so glad that Annie is out there in spite of it!

Thanks for posting the photos! I can’t usually watch the videos (software issues), so it was a real treat to see what you described. I love hearing all your stories though- thank you for sharing! So hopeful!

Have the chimps experienced rain yet ? I wonder what the reaction is to raining falling on their heads?
