Party for Love a Chimpanzee Day

April 23, 2011 by Diana

We put the emphasis on delicious fresh food for Love a Chimpanzee Day 2011, brought to the chimps by Monica, who sponsored a day and sent some extra cash and goodies for us to throw a party. (Find out how you can sponsor a day by visiting our donate page or contacting us).

Here is the forage before spreading it out (and a few non-food treats for the chimps):

fresh produce

Here’s Negra traveling with a perfectly ripe avocado – a favorite among all of the chimpanzees:

Here’s Foxie picking peas out of the “garden” that volunteer Connie created in the sandbox

Negra even opened a present!

Annie seemed fond of this new doll:

Foxie did not seem fond of the same doll, though she did seem to enjoy taking it apart – it’s all part of the fun:

It was a beautiful sunny day in Cle Elum and all of the chimps really enjoyed the goodies today. Dinner ended with lots of nuts for Negra and figs. Little do they know they’ll be having another party tomorrow!

The chimps do get excited when we’re preparing for a party. They get especially excited when we set up forages, spreading their favorite foods around. And often seeing wrapped gifts elicits some excitement, probably because those gifts have been paired with great food bounty in the past.

Hey, it looks like the panels are off the greenhouse, looked like a beautiful day. I imagine the beautiful hair on that doll didn’t last long, too tempting. The blue of her shoes really popped against Annie’s black coat. Negra’s opening a gift was a joy to read.

The panels are still on, but the day was so clear and warm, we had the greenhouse door open, so there wasn’t much humidity. We’ll probably start removing panels in the next couple of weeks. It snowed just the other day. It didn’t stick at all, but that just shows that winter is not quite over in Cle Elum.

There can never be too many parties for the special 7. They deserve a celebration for each day they survived those horrible conditions in the lab and came through it. They really are very special chimps and now they are with very special people. What could be better?! I love watching them enjoy a party!
