It’s harvest time!

September 21, 2010 by Jackie

Despite the less than desirable season, the garden was once again a success this year. We’ve had many a meal that was exclusively from our garden- for example, I served cucumbers, tomatoes, and onions at lunch, and every bit was from the chimps’ own soil. What a special feeling!

Kale:

Leeks:

Strawberries:

Green Zebra Tomatoes:

We’ve also had an abundance of sunflowers, so I cut several today for the chimps. Some were a bit unsure, but Missy and Jody were especially excited. Negra put hers down and immediately asked for grass instead, but eventually decided they weren’t so bad.

That last photo of Jody is a hoot. I can just about hear the flamenco music in the background.

….and I love Negra’s belly. You go girl. Wear it like a medal.

There you go again with perfect shots of our chimps…………but then again you had perfect subject matter!!

I thought the same thing about Jody as Kat did! Caregivers: the next time Jody holds her hand out you just know she’s asking for the catanets! Maybe she could do a dance for the Out of the Box night. What a treat that would be. That would bring in the money for sure!! (Tee-Hee).

    Great shots Jackie!

I LOVE the picture of Negra with her tum and that sunflower. What a sweetheart! Such happy chimpanzee girls. Gorgeous garden, what a wonderful thing.

More great pictures for my album. What would happen if the Chimps were let loose in the garden ? I have the pictures in my mind. Of course, it could never happen.

Gorgeous photos, Jackie. The one of Jody make me think of Jody’s first birthday at the sanctuary. Her birthday (honorary) is on Mothers’ Day and that year she got a lot of lovely roses. There is a great photo of her holding a rose in her mouth just like she is holding the sunflower here. It must be her trade makr with flowers! Love it.

The garden is such a success and they obviously love the home grown produce as well. Seeing the photos of them enjoying the contents of the garden and the photos in general will help to motivate me in my own garden, because I do not have green fingers at all and find it quite boring. I will think of the above images to help me. Thanks for that.
    Excellent photos as ever.

Oh Marie, thanks for the laugh. Well, Peter you are just going to have to let us know next summer who was right!
The chimps’ gardens are beautiful and I know a lot of hard work went into them. What a joy it must be to see your fruits of labor enjoyed by our beloved chimps. Thanks to everyone who did it. I’m sure the chimps enjoyed watching from the windows.
Maybe next year we can plant some stuff on Young’s Hill. 🙂

I just saw this – so beautiful, and such a happy happy thing. I am never able to shake the sensation of remembering what their lives used to be like when I look at how wonderful it is now. And when I see these pictures, I am reminded that the gap between those two states, those two sets of conditions continues to widen. Every day these chimps get further and further from their past – the gap widens, and the quality of their lives continues to improve every day, every season. This makes me so hopeful, for them and for all chimps, especially those still in horrible circumstances. Change comes slowly, but it comes, and I am celebrating that with every picture and video you folks post! Thanks again for all you do for these chimps and all chimps. -K
