Cowgirl Jamie

September 20, 2010 by Jackie

Because of their opposable toes, chimpanzees have feet more similar to our hands, therefore their feet are quite wide. So, I’d say Jamie seemed very proud to find a boot wide enough that she could squish her feet into.

**Editor’s Note**
For those of you unfamiliar to our organization or to those first-time blog readers, please visit this post for our stance on chimpanzees wearing clothes. We put out a variety of enrichment (toys, blankets, clothes, etc.) for the chimps to play with every day. They have the choice to either use something, or not, and in what ever way they see fit. So, if Jamie decides to put on a boot, that is her choice… and on this day, she made the choice to put on the boot. 🙂

Are those the ones I sent her? I can’t tell, I just know I tried to find the biggest boots I could. She does look very proud of herself…you go girl!

We love it that she has a pair she can put her whole foot into! Makes me think that when shopping at Goodwill for Jamie it is best to get extra large mens boots.

Got to love a girl and her cowboy boots!!

Question – How do you actually give them to her? Do you set them in the day-room for her to find? Do the others show any interest in the boots, or does Jamie make a bee-line straight for them? Just curious.

    Thx Jackie!!

I see she even put it on the correct foot! That is fantastic that Jamie was finally able to get her boots on. Way to go Jamie! We are all very happy for you. And you look so good!!!

Those are the one’s you sent, Monica! They are perfect! 🙂

Linda- we can either leave them in an area before giving the chimps access to it, drop them into their food chutes, or (when the greenhouse roof is off) we can throw them on top of the outdoor area. I don’t think anyone else is particularly interested in them, but you never know when that could change!

We wonder if you cut a hole on the side of the boot for her opposable toe if that would help?

Yahoo! FINALLY!! LOL, I think I’m possibly more excited than Jamie – it’s so clear she’s always wanted those boots ON. 🙂 Monica – do you remember what size they are? And kudos to you for your lucky find … and generous heart.

Anna, I don’t know what size they were, I found them in a second hand/ antique store and they just looked big enough for our girl. I know what you are saying about being more excited than she is, everytime I look at the photo it just makes me so happy!

What a triumph for Jamie! Good going to everyone! How about some leggings, a tutu and hat and scarf to make the ensemble complete???? So now we’ve upped the ante – to find boots that really will fit! Good luck to all!

I agree Monica. I just keep going back to the picture with a big grin on my face! It really does warm my heart to see Jamie finally able to wear boots!

I have been unable to actually check the size of the boots you sent Monica, because Jamie still has them, but I think it is safe to say that even though she was excited to be able to put them on all the way, she is overall pretty happy with any size boot. She even has a tiny, Jr. sized cowboy boot that she often nests with. 🙂

I always thought that wearing boots is what she really wanted so she could tap dance like the caregiver. I wondered if someone could have some specially made in her size. I’m glad she finally gets to wear her beloved boots!
