Mirror!

December 30, 2008 by Diana

Some lovely folks on the forum got together and raised enough money for us to purchase a big acrylic mirror for the chimps. We haven’t mounted it yet, but we’ve been propping it up so the chimps can see themselves – their whole selves! Michelle in Alaska just purchased a second one for us!! I can’t wait to mount them! Below is a photo of Jody from today checking out her mouth.

I’m so thrilled! I can’t wait for it to be mounted. Have any of the others shown any interest? I wonder if Jody knows how beautiful she is; just look at that sweet face.

And remember that chimps and all the rest of us great apes, have self recognition. We know it’s us when we look in the mirror! This is pretty special and rare among animals, so the mirrors are really special pieces of enrichment that enable even greater possibilities for self-exploration and creativity, like Negra’s use of mirrors to peer at people without looking at them directly!

I wonder what Jamie will think when she sees herself in the tutu? She’s such a diva in it!!!

I am sooooo happy to hear the mirror has arrived. Jody is so cute looking at herself. I can’t wait to see Foxie showing her trolls the mirror. And how wonderful to hear another mirror is coming. What a great start to the New Year and a wonderful ending to 2008!

I am Jody’s Pal and honored for the opportunity. I was amazed at her face in this picture compared to her face in the picture of her on her first day. What a transformation! Now you can see a wonderful Being in those eyes!

Thank you CSNW for all that you do for them.
