Burrito’s Birthday Bash?

December 30, 2008 by Diana

Shelly Campbell emailed earlier today with a great notion – if everyone who regularly reads the blog gave a few bucks towards Burrito’s birthday, we could throw him one heck of a party. There’s not much time – his birthday is January 6th. Shelly’s already mailed a check for $10. If anyone’s interested in contributing toward the Burrito Birthday fund, you can donate online or by mail (PO Box 952, Cle Elum, WA 98922). If you want, you can respond to this post and let us know you’re sending some celebratory funds this way. We will, of course, share the party with you. Burrito cannot contain his excitement, and we’re sure to get some great footage of the birthday boy in action.

I know Burrito has a big fan club out there – he’s a pretty loveable guy. Even his chimpanzee friends would agree (below is a photo from today of Missy grooming him, with Annie looking on).

and don’t forget you can get note cards with Burrito’s handsome face (see below) in our store

I’ve been meaning to mention this for a while. It’s a bit insignificant, but people who study primates get hung up on certain things, and I figure I owe it to you all to let you in on these things. Chimpanzee hair is similar to the hair we have on our bodies. It differs from fur in a couple of ways – one is that it does not provide the same protection against heat, cold, and water as a coat of fur does (although it helps – my head stays warmer than J.B.’s because I have more hair 🙂 Chimpanzee hair, like our body hair, is not the same as the hair we have on our heads because it stops growing and falls out at a certain length. All that said, the chimpanzees are definitely growing in hair where it was missing before and they look much healthier because of it!

Other things we primate people get hung up on – calling apes monkeys, not including humans in the great ape family, grouping gibbons with monkeys rather than apes, and I’m sure lots of other facts that are not coming to mind right away and that you’d have to learn to know. JGI’s website is pretty good for the basic facts on chimpanzees, like this page: http://www.janegoodall.ca/about-chimp-physical-characteristics.php. Someday we’ll have a lot more basic information on our website too. Please feel free to send me questions for an FAQ section that now only exists in my head! [email protected]

I just mailed a $10.00 check for the beautiful birthday boy.

In the words of John Lennon-

    “Before you go to sleep,
    Say a little prayer,
    Every day in every way,
    It’s getting better and better,
    Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful,
    Beautiful Boy”

Thnak you everyone and thanks Diana for the post! When I am watching youtube (for instance) and I see people calling Great Apes Monkeys, I always have to correct them….cannot help it, you know me, I have to say it! I have received so many emails from people some liking the correction others well you can only imagine! I have printed off pretty much all of R & R s website and JaneGoodalls wedsite and have a 6 inch binder that I keep everything in, Iread the websites over and over. I asked Roslyn sho was the one at Fauna that loved to wear her red lipstick, she siad to ask you as you and JB worked in the chimp houses, who is that Diana, she loved red lipstick and looking in the mirror making sure she looked pretty??? She just reminded me so much of Jamie, do you think so too?

We will send $20 via paypal…..$10 from each of us. Happy Birthday Burrito. I bet he would like a whole library of DVDs for his birthday! Thanks for the idea Shelly.

Diana I have an ideal for birthdates…because you only have Foxie and Burritos birthdates, and we need a birthday for everyone, this is their new life their new beginning and we need to celebrate for each one…Virgil, Annies son, his birthday is 6/20/89 , I celebrate my son that I lost on his birthday, maybe we can use the first born child of each chimp’s birthdate, so we have a birthdate to celebrate for them???? How does that sound????

  17. Diana says

    December 31, 2008 at 9:23 am

Thanks to everyone for your generosity and desire to help Burrito celebrate his birthday! It’s going to be quite the bash indeed! Thanks Shelly for the idea too 🙂

We’ve been talking about different ways to choose birthdays for the five chimpanzees whose birthdays we don’t know – thanks for the idea, Shelly. We’ll let you know what we come up with.

  18. Amy M. says

Diana, Thank you for your two points about hair and grouping apes vs monkeys, etc. One could argue over whether the facts about chimp hair are insignifcant; certainly species groupings are very important. But I personally want to learn it all. I’ll speak just for myself: I feel the more I learn about our chimp people the better friend I can be to them and the better advocate I can be for them. So bring it all on!

  19. Jill says

    December 31, 2008 at 9:42 am

Just submitted my donation on line. (I put Burrito’s Birthday Bash in the notes). Can’t wait for the pictures!
Diana, thank you for the notes about Apes vs. Monkeys. Although I did know the basic differences, I didn’t know the stuff about fur and hair. I’m always learning something!

Anything I can do to help Diana! I know when it comes to parties it is expensive and we all are like the Aunts and Uncles of the chimps so it only seems fair that we help throw the party, I think when you come up with the birthdates for everyone we should make this Birthday Bash a standard blog so we can ensure a wonderful dinner/party for our wonderful seven! Maybe next time we can start like 2 weeks ahead so we amke sure to collect all we can for gifts, food and decorations! Thank you Diana and everyone that is chipping in! HAPPY NEW YEAR! May 2009 bring nothing but happiness, great health and more wonderful new things for the Cle Elum Seven and the other Great Apes and Primates in the United States of America that need our help in releasing them to sanctuary!

I so agree with you Amy M. I want to learn as much as possible to be a better advocate. And thank you Diana. I think a link on your web page to learn all about the chimp people. Count me in on the Burrito bash! I will bring $10 over on the 3rd. That is such wonderful idea!
All the new photos are so good to see. It keeps me closer to everyone while I’m out of town.

I called Chris, the Manager at Safeway in Cle Elum to maybe start a credit account for CSNW, he said we can call in with a credit card and give an ammount over the phone BUT you have to go to a Safeway so they can verify your ID and CC#…just a thought!

    Safeway
    804 W. !st Street
    Cle Elum, WA
    (509)674-2580

I am going to call him tomorrow Diana and put $50.00 on your account so you can shop for food!

  23. Jeani Goodrich says

    December 31, 2008 at 10:05 am

Shelly C What a thoughtful idea. I am a bit confused though. Do you mean Diana, or any of the staff, has to go to the Safeway with her ID and CC# or we have to go to our Safeway with our ID to put money in the Cle Elum account?

  24. Shelly C/Hidden Valley Lake, CA says

    December 31, 2008 at 10:08 am

i MADE IT $100.00 …I told them Diana Goodrich would be picking it up or someone from CSNW! It is available now! Because I cannot send a gift for Burrito! They said just go to Customer Service and it will be there for you!

  25. Shelly C/Hidden Valley Lake, CA says

    December 31, 2008 at 10:10 am

They did it iver the phone with me, I have a VIP Safeway card, so I talked to Chris and he approved it, they just did a $100 giftcard over the phone and I told them there might be more people calling in with donations, they said fine and I do not have to go to the Safeway Store with my ID. Anyone of the staff from CSNW can pick up the giftcards, I gave them Diana, Sarah, JB or Keiths name to put on the card!

Well, since I am new to the “family” this is a wonderful time for me to see how much you all have accomplished over the past year or so, and see the transformation in the chimps. My biggest celebration is that the chimps got to be outside for the first time on my birthday, August 26th! Every year now I’ll celebrate the anniversary of their first view of sunshine as my birthdays highlight! It will always be a sunny day!

Congratulations to all of you who have worked so hard, and to the chimps, who, even with all they have been through, still find moments to laugh!
