Changing Negra

September 27, 2008 by Diana

Many of you have noticed that I recently changed the image of Negra on the homepage of our website. The photo that was up there I had titled “Negra perfect” because I thought that she looked absolutely beautiful in that photo. I still think that she looks beautiful, but, seeing her now that she has more color in her face and her skin has firmed up and her eyes are filled with curiosity and alertness, I can see she is pretty far from perfect in that image. I’m not sure why this surprises me… she was the subject of biomedical research for decades and had been living in a windowless basement with no sun, fresh air, or mental stimulation. Three months later she looks almost like a different chimpanzee. See for yourself below.

The change is amazing, her wrinkled sunken eyes are no more and her resigned look is gone!! Lots of love and good food, fresh air and intersting things to do work miracles!!!! Such lessons about survival and resilience they have to teach us. Her beautiful spirit radiates now!!! Totally amazing!!!!

    Fabulous! She looks years younger!

There’s a Hebrew expression — tikkun olam (healing the world). This is truly what your work is about.

Wow! This is so heartwarming!! 🙂 I did notice before that she was looking much healthier, as are the other chimps, but putting these photos side-by-side really shows the change! She does look years younger and just so relaxed! I love that!! If you have a chance to put comparison photos up of the others, I would love to see how they have changed from the first day! It’s all thanks to Keith & the rest of you at CSNW!! You are all THE BEST!! Thank you all so much for all you do!! 🙂

WOW! I also thought Negra was looking better and getting more hair but to see the pictures together is just too good for words. Not only good food, sunshine and enrichment, it is the love that radiates throughout the Sanctuary and in all who are there. Thank you to everyone of you for your love and caring.
Good idea Audrey. It would be wonderful to see all the changes in everyone.

She is more beautiful now…..and it’s not just because she gets to go outside…it’s because of the love that was given to her and her 5 “sisters” and “brother”…..and the freedome that was given to them….they ARE

At work we call this look the “retirement glow.” Whenever someone retires and returns after a few weeks they look SO different. No more worrying about the job and what it entails, it’s about enjoying life. Looking at Negra and the others, they no longer have to be afraid of what the next day will bring in their previous lab life. Now it’s about having fun, feeling the sun on their faces and breeze in their hair, eating great food, receiving joy, love and respect.

Negra looks fantasitc, she is one beutiful lady!! I cannot remember whose ideal it was for the “The Change for Chimps”can, jars,,whatever.
I decorated a tin with the Cle Elum Seven all over it, walked around work with it and then set it on my desk for a week, also when I got home, everytime I would go somewhere, I dropped the change in the can also bills, and emptied out the vehicle of all the spare chg in them! I though someone else would let everyone know, buy I guess not, so i am letting you all know I sent it in to the Sanctuary and JB sent me an email and said there was $49.22 in the can. So I just thought I would share in case anyone else wants to do this, that was in one week, if youset it out for a month on your desk or wherever. Anyway just thought I would share that…Thanks!!!

Wow………..this really warms my heart. She looks remarkably better. What an amazing difference. Bless her heart. In both photos, it’s so awesome to see the sun shining on her, too.

Let us always remember, as Diana detailed above, the conditions these chimpanzees endured for so long ~ so that we continue to work towards getting chimps out of labs and entertainment and celebrate the new lives of those who are now in Sanctuary.

When you put them side by side, the difference is amazing! She is so beautiful! Amazing what love can do.

You know what else I see in the picture on the home page? I see hope instead of resignation. I see joy instead of frustration. I see alertness instead of hollowness. She was always physically beautiful – but her heart and soul are now shining through to the outside instead of being stuffed away in some protected little corner.

I think the difference that shines through between those two pictures, and that has come into being in just a few short months, speaks more eloquently about the power and beauty of the Sanctuary movement than mere words can convey.

The difference I have noticed most is in their eyes, that lifeless stare has been replaced with a twinkle. They have more hair, it’s shiny and healthy.

Wow, what a change! We can clearly see the color of her skin changed a lot and she looks rested. I love to see this.

    Sarah,

You are a wonderful human being for saving and bringing happiness to these wonderful creatures. I am so ashamed as a human being to know what horrors our species is subjecting all our other planetary companions to.
I can’t wait to come down and visit your sanctuary and get to see these beautiful creatures.

Is there a way I can donate a car to you? The cars are in Spokane. I noticed that Donationline.com has a number of animal welfare organizations they support. Are you tied into this?

    Thanks,

    Larry
