The other day I was trying to impress upon someone just how strong chimpanzees are, when Jamie decided to make my case for me. She swung across the ceiling of the outdoor enclosure (this arm to arm swinging is called brachiating), and proceeded to hang upside down for a while, just because she could. While this is totally normal chimp behavior, it is quite amazing considering that Jamie has been locked in small cages for decades, with no way to practice this behavior or exercise in any way. Imagine the inherent strength she must possess to swing so effortlessly after so many years of confinement…

I just finished teaching my first day of school for this year and logged on to see what was new. Seeing Jamie playing made my day. I was dragging until I opened the blog. Thanks for the great pictures and for brightening my day!

Anyone know how to pronounce “brachiating”….is it brake-ee-eight-ing?
Shelly Knapp says

It never ceases to amaze me how both instinct and environment operate together as the chimps evolve in their new enriched and spacious environment. Between the Missy and the blanket video and Jamie brachiating it just seems like the more stuff and opportunities the chimps have the more they take advantage of it all and expand their lives. I am constantly in awe of their enthusiasm and love of this new life even after all they’ve been thru. Each day it’s just more and more exciting to see what will happen next!

I have been creating the myspace for 8 hours and this is how far I am at this point,, it took 6 hours just to find a layout, I had chimps in the background but decided I would not use them because if they are posing for a picture they must be with a trainer, and there is no way I can exploit that on mysoace. Anyway you can see the beginning here:

It will probably take me about a month to get it just rightm if anyone has any ideals let me know! I have not added captions to the pictures but I will when I am finished loading them!!!!
Good Night all!!!

Wow Shelly, your myspace site is fabulous! I am so impressed. Thank you for doing that. I know we will go back to it time and again.

Oh, and Jamie…..your brachiating is fabulous too! Isn’t it great learning technical words for things? Thanks for giving us the definitions CSNW staff. By the way, here is an idea….for Karen’s birthday she told those who wanted to know that instead of gifts she would prefer donations to CSNW. She even gave a gift herself to CSNW for her birthday. Isn’t that a great idea?
Jeani Goodrich says
That is a fabulous idea. Mine isn’t until April but I think I will throw a party and ask for donations. Thanks for the idea. And I agree, thanks staff for giving us the definitions for all those new words.
