(you should all be so proud of what all of you have accomplished. It is impossible to comprehend what this new found freedom and comfort must meanto these beautiful creatures.I read that one of the chimps is a male.Does this mean that you have to administer birth control pills to the females or does the male have a vasectomy?

Thank you for your comment, Ed! It truly is impossible to comprehend what this new life means to the chimpanzees. It is an overwhelming experience to see them each day do things that they have never before had the opportunity to do. We hope to continue to make everyday a new and enriching experience for them.

To answer your question – Burrito, the male of the Cle Elum Seven chimpanzees, has been vasectomized.

I have a question, I know that Burrito has been vasectomized…but with the life they had at the lab and all the tests that they were put thru….if they can, is it still safe for the females to give birth?? Thanks

    Hi Paula,

Thanks for your question. I’m no expert on chimpanzee reproduction, so I can’t answer the question directly. I imagine there would be increased risk, due to their ages and their histories. But I can say with certainty that as a sanctuary, we would not allow breeding to take place, even if it were safe. While we are thrilled to be able to offer a better life to the Cle Elum 7, the situation for them is far from ideal and we would not want more chimpanzees born into this life. In addition, we would prefer to spend what little time and resources we have working to rescue other chimpanzees in need.

I hope that answers your question, in a roundabout way 🙂

    J.B.

It answers my question, but I just wanted to explain myself, I was not getting at that they should reproduce….it was just more as a hypothethic question…..I wouldn’t want to see these chimps go thru anything more like what they went thru in their previous lives. I didn’t mean to come across as being uncaring, I’m not..it broke my heart to hear that these animals were test animals, I don’t like seeing or hearing about that….I love animals, and they need more people like you fighting for their rights. As much as I don’t like mice and rats, it even bothers me that they are used for testing…..So thank you for your answer and I do appreciate you taking the time to answer me….again thanks for saving these 7 beautiful creatures and when you have the time could you please give each one a hug for me if possible, and I know they don’t understand, but please tell them thank you for letting the outside world watch them. they are beautiful.
