Celebrating 5 years of sanctuary and a very special birthday

June 13, 2013 by Elizabeth

Today has been an incredible day. We’re so moved to see all the love for the Cle Elum Seven as the Give Five donations keep rolling in. As of right now, we’ve raised $10,550 toward our summer goal of $35,000! We’re asking for just $5 as a pledge of support for the chimps and the sanctuary (and as a happy birthday wish for Negra!).

It wouldn’t be a CSNW holiday without a party, of course, and the chimpanzees are expert partiers with five years of practice under their belts. Volunteer caregivers Denice, Seana, and Patti came this morning to help the chimps celebrate. Denice dressed up the morning fruit smoothie and put it in festive plastic shot glasses.

Patti brought several pinatas, including this one to honor Negra’s birthday.

Missy was very interested in the pinata, but she had some nuts to eat first, so she held on to it.

As for the birthday girl, she has had a pretty great day. Here she is with some fruit smoothie:

And with a tiara pinata (she is the Queen, after all):

After the party Negra explored Young’s Hill, venturing so high up the hill that we lost sight of her for awhile.

And after all that activity, she took a well-deserved nap.

We really can’t say what all of your support means to us. You enable us to do what we do. Here’s to another five years!

Sunny sanctuary days

June 2, 2013 by Lisa

Last week Katelyn posted about Jamie’s reaction to a relief from the rainy days of May. I have to admit, I’m right there with her! I, too, have anxiously been awaiting the warmth of the central Washington summer. Working here brings an added satisfaction to each sunny day as I have the pleasure of anticipating and watching the joy of the chimpanzees as they forage and spend time on Young’s Hill. Never having been deprived of the sky, the wind, the grass, and the sun I simply can not imagine what an amazing contrast this is to the chimpanzees today but I appreciate every opportunity, every day that gives them one more gift of freedom. Here is Missy, enjoying Young’s Hill in the sun.

Honoring Apollo

May 1, 2013 by Katelyn

Debbie Redwine sponsored today in memory of Apollo Chimpanzee. Debbie shared that she was very moved by Sarah Baeckler’s story of the undercover work she did at a Hollywood training facility. Apollo was a young chimpanzee that Sarah worked with at the facility and Debbie wanted to do something to honor his life. As many of you know, Sarah is our former Executive Director. Today Sarah begins her next venture as Director of The North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance (NAPSA) where we know she will continue to improve the lives of captive primates while advocating for all those still in need of a safe haven. Debbie, thank you so much for your compassion and generosity in honoring Apollo and Sarah today!

Fierce Foxie

April 24, 2013 by Katelyn

Foxie may be petite, but she’s fierce when she wants to be.  One of countless things that I love about this chimpanzee woman.

Exercise

February 4, 2013 by Elizabeth

Now that the snow has melted and the sun has returned, the chimpanzees have been really enjoying being outside on Young’s Hill.  This morning we witnessed an impressive burst of activity.  I can imagine how good it must feel to them to be able to stretch their legs.

Getting comfortable

November 29, 2012 by Jackie

I love to watch Jody nest. It’s such a science to get the blankets just right so that you feel safe and comfortable in your bed – and Jody is a master at getting comfortable!

Hopefully you have heard about our Team Chimp Fundraiser, but if not check out this link. Team Jody is in last place! Give her some love and join her team!

Sleeping Jody

November 18, 2012 by Jackie

Since her injury, it’s been all about Jody on the blog this last week. We like to mix things up for you as much as possible, but I snapped a few photos of her in and out of sleep in the front rooms this morning and I couldn’t resist sharing them. She has one of the prettiest faces I’ve ever seen.
