The tapestry of sanctuary

May 26, 2019 by Katelyn

Many humans would probably feel differently, but for most us here, this human for sure, and the chimpanzees, it’s really a perfect Pacific Northwest kind of spring day.

Spring has been subdued this year, running about a month late. Things are lush and green, and though a few flowers are in a superbloom like we’ve not seen in past years, most blooms and birds and bumbles are arriving late and in smaller numbers, if at all. Spring here on this side of the Cascade Mountain foothills usually gifts us with a few weeks in April of charcoal skies, rainy, sometimes-cool-sometimes-balmy days and a world turned lush neon green. You almost feel like you’re in a different habitat, so to speak. And speaking for myself as someone who was born and raised along rivers and sea in the fog of the redwoods, and also the now PNW chimpanzees who live here, it’s pretty heavenly. Especially knowing that in a mere few weeks things will be dry and hot and brown. So for now, we all relish and revel in these beautiful days.

Missy led everyone (well, except Negra who was tucked under her sheet in the greenhouse finishing her breakfast) on a walk around the perimeter this morning!

Jody, Foxie and Annie following Missy:

Annie must have been feeling a little braver re: snakes, and walked part of the way with the group and then opted for higher ground on a structure. I saw her later as she sat watching her best friend, Missy, bounce along the perimeter, kicking her feet in anticipation of Missy’s return:

Surprisingly, it was Jamie bringing up the rear today and following Burrito:

She stopped on the log bridge as the rest of the group went on:

The grass is pretty tall know and the chimps can be hard to spot sometimes, which is really wonderful. All along the top of the hill I could only see Missy’s back with each spring as she bounced through the grass as full speed. But she was sticking close to Jody (while keeping it cool) because Jody had found a prized treat that Missy loves: goat’s beard dandelions. You might be wondering about all that gorgeous lupine. In very large amounts it does have a toxicity, but whether it’s that it doesn’t taste good to the chimps or that they have some inner knowing as to which plants are safe, they don’t eat it. (If we observed otherwise, we’d remove it of course).

Unfortunately for Missy, Jody wasn’t in a sharing her goat’s beard kinda mood, but I did go pick some for Missy. 🙂

There are entire meadows of lupine blooming around the sanctuary right now. It’s the most heavenly scent.

Foxie and friend:

Burrito still bringing up the rear:

We are often lucky to host several species of birds who either stop by briefly during migration or return to the sanctuary year after year to nest and raise their families before moving on. In the something like 8 1/2 years I’ve helped care for the chimps, I have never once seen an Oriole and this spring a pair of Bullock’s Orioles in all their fiery orange, yellow and black glory are paying us a visit. They are super elusive so far, but you can hear their exotic songs floating through the sanctuary all day. And we had this special one stop by, a Western Kingbird!

There are few places where I have seen such a variety of flora, fauna and habitat coming together in one place. Mountains, forest, shrub-steppe, meadow and wetland, all woven together at the edges to create a rich kaleidoscope of life. The more you know this land, the more you see how unique it is and if you travel very far in any direction from the sanctuary it is less varied. We have the honor of caring for this land, this refuge for so many, and watching it grow and become more vibrant with each passing year. While it’s certainly a gift for the humans to experience, the real gift is knowing all it provides for the chimpanzees, one tiny bovine family, and all those we hope will one day, too, call this their sanctuary, their home.

Thank you, Meg!

May 24, 2019 by Katelyn

The chimps’ dear friend, Meg Lunnum, sponsored today in honor of some new friends of hers!

“I would like to honor my new chimpanzee friends from the Tulsa Zoo, Suzy, Morris, Hope, Vindi, Bernsen, 5 year old Enloe and Jodi. The day I visited, it looked like they didn’t like kale very much but were having lots of fun with shredded sisal packing material. Based on the accommodations for the Cle Elem Seven, I always try to see if chimpanzees at zoos I visit are happy.”

Meg, thank you so much for looking out for chimpanzees everywhere and for introducing us to these lovely people. Enloe and his mama, Jodi, are awfully sweet. It makes us so happy to know that you hold the the chimps’ lives here as an example of joy and well-being. We’re grateful to you for helping to ensure that for them. We certainly hope for all animals, in captivity and the wild, to experience such things in their lives.

Snake patrol

May 20, 2019 by Katelyn

There are a few weeks each year in early spring that are dreamlike here at the sanctuary. Of course, the sanctuary holds it’s own magic year-round, but this time of year the world briefly turn lush, vibrant green, the air is scented with lupine and the birdsong is never-ending. It’s glorious, really. And even more so to watch the chimpanzees enjoy these days.

Bleeding hearts:

This little finch sang and sang all the day long:

We’ve had a literal superbloom of balsamroot this year and the entire canyon is covered in bright yellow blooms:

Everyone was at the top of the hill together this morning already on snake patrol:

Foxie:

Dear, sweet Annie wanted to join the group, but she was more concerned about walking through known “snake territory” to join them and opted to use the firehose to avoid stepping on the ground. The chimps have been seeing a snake the past couple of days, most likely a harmless racer or garter snake, and if you’ve been following for awhile you might recall that Annie HATES snakes. She screams at the top of her lungs at the mere suggestion of one:

Safe with Missy:

Jamie and I went walking before dinner and I quickly figured out we were on a serious snake hunt. She bravely scoured under every log and patch of flowers she could find:

I found a snake on my side of the fence, but I didn’t tell Jamie about this green racer taking a nap outside of Young’s Hill:

May your spring days be as magical as the chimps’!

The day after the party

May 13, 2019 by Katelyn

All of the chimpanzees slept in this morning. While it’s not unusual to come in and find a few people still in their nests, it’s a little unusual to find everyone not only still in their nests, but most of them sound asleep. Even as I began quietly unlocking doors and starting the morning task list, it was a few minutes before anyone woke up.

Foxie was curled up on the heated floor with her doll, still in dreamland, and when she eventually stirred she sat up sleepy-eyed, hair on end in excitement, and trundled over to say good-morning, eyes barely open, but full of joy. Negra even skipped the first part of breakfast and chose to take advantage of having the greenhouse all to herself to get a few more minutes of sleep. But I think we can all relate to the day after an exciting party event.

And yesterday’s birthday lady, Jody? Well, see for yourself…

Happy Mother’s Day Lynda!

May 12, 2019 by Katelyn

This special day was sponsored by Jamie Ferguson in honor of her mother, Lynda Ferguson! Jamie shared this beautiful message for her mother:

“What better day than Mother’s Day to honor and celebrate the woman who instilled in me my love for animals and passion for animal welfare? My mom, Lynda Ferguson, has always loved animals and it’s because of her that I grew up respecting and loving them too. While she loves all animals, she absolutely adores the chimps of the Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest and she delights in seeing the photos and videos you post each day about their adventures. She introduced me to the chimps as well and, of course, I fell in love with them too. Happy Mother’s Day, Lynda Ferguson! Thank you for sharing with me your love for animals and for truly being the most loving, selfless and generous mom anyone could every ask for and for being my best friend. I love you!”

Jamie, thank you for honoring your mother in such a gracious way and adding even further to the chimpanzees’ lives. We’re so thrilled knowing how much they mean to you both.

Happy Mother’s Day, Lynda! Thank you for loving the chimps and for the difference you make in the world for so many by sending that love through your heart and your daughter.

Mother’s day is a very special day here at the sanctuary. Annie, Foxie, Jody, Missy and Negra are each mothers and we honor them and their children today, as well as each of the chimpanzees and the childhoods they themselves lost. Mother’s Day is also the day we chose to celebrate Jody and her official-unofficial birthday and as such, Jody is 44 today! Jody is the self-appointed “mother hen” of the group, always ensuring that everyone is safe, present and accounted for.

Jody and Foxie:

Who doesn’t wish they had a turtle pool to relax in?

When she’s not rounding up her family members or luxuriating in one of her creative nests, she finds time to maintain her title of Queen of Foraging:

Happy Mother’s Day to everyone celebrating today! We celebrate and honor all the many nurturing, supportive and loving forms which mothering comes in and wish you each a beautiful day.

And Happy Birthday, Jody!! We love you so very much! Everyone tune in later today to see the celebration. 🙂

Sleeeeepy…

April 29, 2019 by Katelyn

The toastiest of toasty greenhouses, a full belly, a good friend (annnnnd…a blanket?!?!) equals the sleepiest of sleepy Foxies:

If you’ve been following the chimps’ lives for awhile you’ve probably seen us write about the fact that Foxie is the only one of the chimps who chooses not to nest with any blankets. She’s quite comfortable curling up in her tiny chimp way with her dolls on the heated floor or a sun puddle on a platform. I took all these photos, speaking to her throughout and even resized them for the blog before it suddenly dawned on me that she was sleeping on a blanket! I ran out to the greenhouse to see if maybe it had just appeared that way in the photos, but nope! There was not one, but two blankets curled around her. Not in full nest fashion like most of the other chimps, but decidedly under her. !!!

You may think, “What’s the big deal?” In the grand scheme of things, nothing really, as she’s been perfectly content before. Foxie has appeared happy and at ease nesting as she chooses sans blankets for almost eleven years now. Perhaps her whole life. And while it’s merely emotionally appealing to the humans to think she might be extra comfortable with blankets, she obviously knows herself best. But I’ve observed Foxie choosing to incorporate a few new changes into her days recently.

Foxie has also been known not to like to engage much with enrichment or reach into things, like boxes or bags, even if her beloved dolls are in them. The other night we gave the chimps grab bags for their evening enrichment (brown paper bags filled with toys and treats such as seeds and nuts, peanut butter pinecones, etc) when I heard a flurry of ripping and tearing. Grab bags are coveted by most of the chimps, but especially Jamie. I assumed it was her creating the commotion and when I went to see what all the hullabaloo was about, there stood Foxie, bipedal, tugging with all her might to extract several bags from the food chute and then proceed to go through each one and pull out all the items she wanted. My heart swelled.

Foxie has also demonstrated sudden progress in PRT (Positive Reinforcement Training). PRT allows us to work with the chimpanzees and invite them to participate in their healthcare which ideally makes simpler medical interventions easier and often dramatically reduces their stress when treatment is required. Foxie and I, along with Missy, are partners. We’ve been doing PRT for a few years now and as you may already be guessing from the above, Foxie isn’t really a fan. Of course, it makes perfect sense given her history. But low and behold, with the support and assistance of Missy, and sometimes the other chimps, demonstrating that a little spray here and there isn’t really a bad thing, Foxie is now participating more than she ever has. She’s not always thrilled, but she does it and continues to engage. There are even times that her relief and satisfaction in having participated and coming through “unscathed” seems almost palpable, as if she knows she accomplished something that required a lot of courage and it wasn’t so bad after all.

All these years later since arriving to the sanctuary, the chimps continue to amaze, surprise and delight us with their new found interests and courageous adventures. Even if the chimps try something new and choose never to do it again, their universe and spirits expanded from all the courage it took to try. Reaching into a bag, allowing a blanket to touch you, comfort you, may not seem big in the grand scheme of things. But for Foxie and her family, these seemingly small steps continue to be big ones in their healing. And for me, my heart shoots off silent fireworks, I want to jump and shout from the rooftops, because I’ve had the privilege to witness the bravest of brave souls expand.

It’s Love a Chimpanzee Day!

April 23, 2019 by Katelyn

It’s that time of year again! It’s Love a Chimpanzee Day! As a way to celebrate how amazing chimpanzee people are (and her own special day!), our incredible friend, Monica Best, has designated this official “Love a Chimpanzee Day” and sponsors this day of sanctuary each year!

Monica, thank you so much for every single thing that you do to make sure the chimpanzees lives are filled with all the joy and hope possible. We’re so lucky to have you in our chimp family! You’re a light in the world for so many animals and an inspiration to so many humans. We all hope you have as beautiful a day as you help make possible for so many beings.

We also received an additional gift donation in honor of Monica from her mother, Linda Miller, with this sweet note:

“In honor of my wonderful daughter, Monica Best, as she sponsors her special birthday day on April 23rd.”

Thank you, Linda, for making certain that Monica is celebrated on this day as well! We truly appreciate the love you both bring to the chimps’ lives for all of us to share in.

Happy Love a Chimpanzee Day, everyone! The chimps are going to be enjoying a day of each of their favorite foods and as always, surrounded by so much love, thanks to all of you.
