In memory of Harrison and Rita

July 25, 2023 by Katelyn

Many thanks to Ashley Stroud for sponsoring this day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees and bovines in memory of Harrison and Rita.

We really appreciate you thinking of them all in this way, including them in your memories, and contributing to their well-being, Ashley.

Happy Birthday, Gordo and Dave!

July 19, 2023 by Katelyn

For our first sponsorship today, thanks so much to Terry Stockdale for sponsoring a day of sanctuary “in honor of my son Dave Stockdale and his twin brother GORDO. Wishing both very HAPPY BIRTHDAYS with great gifts and favorite food treats.”

Happy Birthday, Dave, from all of us here! Thanks for sharing your day with Gordo and adding to his and his family’s celebration!

Happy Birthday, Gordo! We love this guy and his mysterious, quirky, endearing, bunny-hoppin’ ways so much and we’re so honored to be celebrating his 35th birthday with him today!

Be sure to tune in later today for the celebration!

For World Chimpanzee Day and Dr. Jane Goodall!

July 14, 2023 by Katelyn

Many thanks to Simon Collins for sponsoring this special day of sanctuary: “In honour of World Chimpanzee Day, July 14th, and Dr Jane Goodall who first set foot in the Gombe on this day in 1960 to study our closest living relatives!”

A little about today from the World Chimpanzee Day website: “July 14 has long been a special occasion being the day in 1960 when Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE started her trailblazing research on the wild chimpanzees of Gombe National Park, Tanzania. Over the last half-decade we’ve made it extra special by marking World Chimpanzee Day on this day every year. This year, like every year, is a day of celebration – of chimpanzees and of our collective impact to help save them.”

Learn more about this day and how you can help advocate for chimpanzees, particularly via this years social media focused campaign, on the World Chimpanzee Day website!

You’ll even see beautiful Annie on the website!

Negra:

Jody (below), Negra and Annie were all stolen from their families in Africa as infants. While today is in part about wild chimpanzee populations and raising awareness about the threats they face such as poaching, habitat loss and disease, it’s also about helping to ensure chimpanzees have the best lives possible in captive situations.

In memory of Ned and Noreen

July 8, 2023 by Katelyn

Our many thanks to Joan O’Flaherty, who has loyally sponsored a day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees and bovines in memory of her parents, Ned and Noreen O’Flaherty, for many years now.

‘Today is my late parents anniversary. They loved animals and would be delighted to see chimpanzees and cows enjoying their sanctuary.”

Thank you so much for celebrating your parents this way, Joan! How lovely to be remembered and honored in such a way and to have one’s legacy continue to ripple outward making a difference in the lives of so many. We appreciate you sharing your special memories of Ned and Noreen here for the chimps and our tiny bovine family.

Happy Birthday, Virginia!

July 3, 2023 by Katelyn

Thanks so much to Virginia Keulen for sponsoring a day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees and for her loyal support and love in their lives!

“My birthday is on July 3rd. I feel that the only way for me to have a truly happy birthday is for me to sponsor a day for the chimps. I love reading about all their activities on the blog everyday. The blog and videos bring me a lot of joy.”

Happy Birthday from us all, Virginia! Have a beautiful day!

July celebrations!

July 1, 2023 by Katelyn

And we love that the start of each month gives us the opportunity to send our heartfelt wishes for the happiest of days for all of you celebrating your own birthdays. Happy July Birthdays, friends! We appreciate your presence in our lives, and especially the lives of all who call the sanctuary home, more than you could know.

After the non-stop festivities of June, we can (almost) catch our breath for a brief moment here at the sanctuary, but that by no means there are no big celebrations to be had.

We’ll start things off with the chimpanzees July 4th celebration. Here’s Negra grabbing one of last year’s watermelon bowls during the forage:

Whispering sweet nothings to her potato. As you do:

Sweet Dora:

Then we’re on to birthdays! It’s Gordo! This handsome man of mystery is going to be 35 on July 19th!

You can often find Gordo off in some quiet corner of his indoor enclosures or greenhouses enjoying his solitude, but taking in everything going on. It makes those times when he invites caregivers to a game of bunny-hoppin’ chase, or when you catch sight of him playing or grooming with this group mates, extra special. Just look at him!:

And seeing him on the Bray lately while both relying on and supporting his friends with so much courage and curiosity has been making our hearts sing. Here he is below with Rayne:

And the very next day, July 20th, we celebrate beautiful Betsy turning 16!

Here she is (r) as she runs with Honey (front) and her son, Nutmeg, on the way to their spring/summer pasture earlier this year:

Betsy (r) and her forever “baby boy”, Nutmeg:

And an additional celebration this month you may be interested in is World Chimpanzee Day on July 14th! It’s the anniversary of the day Dr. Jane Goodall began her research of the wild chimpanzees of Gombe in 1960 and was created to help empower communities worldwide to celebrate, raise awareness and advocate for the protection and future of this incredibly unique and vital species. This year’s theme is “Chimpanzees Take Over the Internet!” with the intent being to flood the internet with positive images of chimpanzees to help everyone become more familiar with the differences between positive and negative content online. (Be sure to check out the website and see which beauty you might recognize under “Caring for Chimpanzees.”).

Here’s amazing Jamie studying one of her great apes books:

Happy Birthday, Tobin!

July 1, 2023 by Katelyn

Many thanks to Rebecca Babcock for sponsoring a day of sanctuary for the chimpanzees in celebration of her friend, Tobin!

“Happy Birthday Dear Tobin.

Tobin, you have the purest heart and the deepest love for our chimpanzee cousins at CSNW. You remind me of the patron saint of animals, so here’s my ode. Where there is hatred let there be Grooming. Where there is injury let there be Jamie. When there is discord let there be Mave. Where there is doubt let there be Lucky. Where there is error let there be an audit by Cy. Where there is despair let there be Burrito. Where there is sadness Lilacs. When there is darkness, Nightbags for all.”

Have a wonderful day, Tobin!
