Taking some photos up a notch

January 17, 2015 by Diana

I really like black and white photos. I think it lends a more intimate feeling to portraits – you can really concentrate on the person’s facial features and wonder about their personalities and their pasts without the distraction of color.

We’ve been getting some great close-up photos of the chimpanzees lately plus I found a few that we hadn’t posted before, so I thought I would render some in black and white and sepia.

What do you think?

This is a close up of Annie’s eyes:

Jamie (I just love this photo that Katelyn took – it’s great in color and sepia):

It’s a day in honor of Peggy Fujimura

January 15, 2015 by Diana

I love this story so much – as a Christmas gift, Peggy Fujimura gave supporter Erin Yuhas $100 to donate to a chimpanzee charity of her choice. So, Erin decided to donate the money to the Cle Elum Seven and sponsor a day in honor of Peggy! It’s like a gift that goes back and forth AND benefits chimpanzees – how great is that?!

This is the lovely message that Erin shared when she made the sponsor-a-day donation, “Peggy, too, is an animal lover and is appreciative of all the work that goes in to caring for our furry friends. I can’t thank her enough and thought that this was the best way to honor her generosity. Thanks for all you do for these chimpanzees and thanks for the great blogs and pictures. Keep up the good work and I someday hope to visit!”

Thanks to you both, Erin and Peggy – Jamie hopes you can visit someday too!

A day for Adrienne DiCerbo. A day for food.

January 14, 2015 by Diana

Today was sponsored by Eric Beckley in honor of Adrienne DiCerbo’s birthday. Here is the delightful message from Eric,

“Burrito wants to wish his fellow Capricorn Adrienne DiCerbo a happy birthday and hopes that her birthday, like his, is filled with food, food, and more food”.

With that in mind, here’s a really old video (July 2008), that was the first time we heard Burrito’s completely unreal food enjoyment noises. You can hear the other chimps in the background food grunting, more or less “normally,” but Burrito’s squeaking noises are pretty unique to him.

Burrito’s obvious love of food is certainly one of the most charming aspects of his personality.

Adrienne, you choice for today may not be an entire head of lettuce, but we join Eric is wishing you for a day filled with the food you love the most – Happy Birthday!

Today is for Luke Brock

January 11, 2015 by Diana

Yesterday, Barbara Anderson sponsored the day for five-year-old JP Brock. Today, Barbara sponsored a day of sanctuary for JP’s seven-year-old brother, Luke.

Barbara wanted us to be sure to show these big-hearted kids how much the chimpanzees benefit from generous donors. Donations truly allow the chimpanzees to be happy!

Rather than a photo, I decided this is best illustrated with a video. I had almost forgotten about this video when a comment showed up on it the other day. I laughed out loud (mainly at Jamie’s inventive use of troll dolls) when I watched it again.

I hope you enjoy it too, Luke!

This Day of Sanctuary Sponsored for JP Brock and Dennis Dougherty

January 10, 2015 by Diana

We have two sponsors for today’s day of sanctuary! Dennis Dougherty is celebrating his birthday by sponsoring today, and Barbara Anderson sponsored today for JP Brock.

JP is possibly our youngest sponsor-a-day honoree at just 5 years old. We hope he’s excited to see his name on the blog! It seems that JP and his brother Luke Brock (who will be honored tomorrow) are learning all about helping animals from Barbara, who understands that the chimps’ lives in sanctuary are only possible because generous people give donations.

It’s so heartwarming that Barbara is one of the special folks who are helping young children learn about the sad issues facing chimpanzees, and teaching them that these problems can be helped by people like them who decide to make a difference!

And what a difference donations make. Just look at the photos of Missy when she first arrived compared to today:

And here’s a photo of recent birthday-boy Burrito just for Dennis:

Thank you both for celebrating sanctuary by sponsoring today!

Happy Birthday to Don Young!

January 2, 2015 by Diana

Don Young, of the famed Young’s Hill that the chimpanzees enjoy everyday, has a birthday today! His wife Karen wanted the chimps to have a party in his honor, so she sponsored today and sent a little bit extra for party supplies and food. So be sure to check back later for party photos!

Karen had this to share about sponsoring today:

“In honor of the love of my life, my incredible, generous, supportive husband who will be 76 years old. Without him, his work ethic and decades of dedication to his profession, as well as love and attention to his family, we would not be able to donate to CSNW. What is important to me or to the rest of the family, is important to him. He is an amazing person, and we are all blessed to have him by our sides.”

We couldn’t agree more. The Young’s have done so much for Foxie, Negra, Annie, Missy, Jody, Burrito, and Jamie. Truly, the sanctuary would not be what it is today without their support. So, we too want to extend our heartfelt wishes for a very happy day to Don, with many more birthdays to come.

Karen sponsored this day last year as well, and here’s a photo from the party of Negra enjoying some Brussels sprouts. It’s hard to believe it’s been a whole year!

New Year’s Day Sponsored by Diane and Sherri

January 1, 2015 by Diana

Today is certainly a very special day. You, supporters of Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest, helped us to really ring in 2015 in style by getting us beyond our goal of $65,000 in individual donations in the month of December. Wow!

Two people contributed to this success by making a sponsor-a-day donation and choosing this special day to sponsor. Thank you, Sherri Mudri and Diane Mattis!

Sherri’s gift message for today is “Happy New Year to the Magnificent 7!”

and volunteer Diane shared this lovely thought, “New Year’s Day is the beginning of another year for us all to celebrate what we have and think of what we can do in 2015 to make the world a better place. 2015 will be another year for the Chimps to be loved, kept safe and well and grow because of the dedication, kindness and love each person at the Sanctuary provides freely every day. Happy 2015 to the Chimps and the Humans.”

What more needs to be said?

Here are two photos to celebrate today:

This second photo is featured on the back of our 2015 calendar – hopefully many of you are hanging up your calendars today!
