The 7th Annual Running of the Cows

April 28, 2025 by J.B.

It’s time for another Running of the Cows, wherein our small herd of rescued bovines – Betsy, Honey, and Meredith – leave their winter pasture and head for the hills! The first stop this spring is the south pasture, by the Bray, where they are greeted by Terry, Gordo, Rayne, and a cautiously excited Cy.

Meredith’s arthritis treatments at WSU College of Veterinary Medicine seem to have been worthwhile, as she was able to keep up with her mom and Betsy all the way to the south pasture (though, like me, she is probably a bit sore today).

While the cows are enjoying their green pastures, we’ll be finishing their new feed barn. This barn will be used primarily for hay and straw storage, which will be necessary when we dismantle the old barn near the chimp house to make way for the new staff and volunteer building. But it will also be used as a sheltered feeding area, making room in the current cattle barn for more cows to sleep comfortably. Who knows, maybe another rescued cow or two will join our family when the time is right?

Ah, what an endearing sight to see Meredith, her mama, and Auntie Betsy not only partaking of greener pastures, but to see Cy react not with apparent alarm calls but, perhaps, a happy dance of sorts to greet his new warm-weather neighbors. Happy moo-ving day, Cow-girls.

    That’s funny, Tobin!
I also noticed that Mer seemed to have more pep in her step! I love how they speed up at the realization of fresh grass!
JB, That was a curious little dance Cy was doing. Was it part of a display? was it an issue because he’s afraid of cows? I’ve just never seen him react to such a degree and in that way…

Hard to say exactly but I would describeit has nervous/excited to see the cows and excited to see and get reassurance from Dr. Erin.

Thanks, JB! I wondered if it had anything to do with the person behind the camera. It seemed as though he was looking at a person, not just the cows.

Only Nutmeg RIP is missing this year. I hope another cow or two will be welcomed into the fold and that the right time will be soon!

Yay! Thank you J.B.! I always enjoy seeing the cows excitement (and in earlier years, trepidation) as the gates open and the trip to the new pasture begins. Was that Meredith, last in line, trotting from the start?! The field is such a beautiful place for the girls to enjoy springtime. Nice to see the chimps out and about keeping an eye on everyone, especially Cy. His little excitement dance was keeping right in beat with the music. So funny.

Oh my, Cy, was that your own chimp version of a country hoedown line dance. Yeehaw.

Glad to see the girls going out (I know Nutmeg is running right alongside them). Cy’s reaction to the bovines seems much more positive than to their magazine counterparts. Perhaps Neggie might appreciate his little excited dance?

Excited to see CSNW expand. I wonder what it will look like in 5 years! 🙂
