Good Morning Cardio

April 29, 2025 by Chad de Bree

Over the course of the years, you may have seen some of the videos posted by other caregivers of them greeting the chimpanzees in the morning. Most of those videos include head nodding, breathy panting, kisses, grooming, etc. Nice slow and calm morning greeting one could expect. But not all caregivers are greeted in the morning the same way. My mornings usually consist of some kind of cardio activity.

Note: The video has been sped up as to not allow the video to stay in it’s nearly 20 minute length it was. I was going to add some music to accompany the video, but I think it’s better with the pitter patters and chimpmunk (see what I did there) voices. And if you’re looking at the time stamps of the footage, the time stamps are different by an hour. This is because there are two security camera systems. From time to time they have to be calibrated so the times can sync up. It was when find this footage I realize I had forgotten to calibrate them after Daylight Savings Time. (They’re sync’d now.)

I’m too old with a bad knee to play chase with Burrito or Gordo, but I am happy to see there are Care Staff with good enough legs to give all the chimps their daily workout. What exhausting fun.

    CSNW fitness centre!
The stompy feet sounds are hysterical.
Question – Is it a boy thing – only the boys are wanting a morning run with Chad. Once Jenna takes over do the boys want to run with her as well, and are the girls interested once Jenna is there?

Hi Karen! The answer to the first question is yes. The boys will essentially play with whomever happens to be around. So once Jenna tagged in, they started to play with her. In my experience and from what I’ve seen, it’s really dependent on which girl and day/mood. Every so often Dora, Mave, Jamie, Missy, and Honey B will want to play chase, with Honey B being the most likely to initiate a game of chase from my experience.

        Thanks for answering Chad.
I find all these little day to day bits of information facinating

You’re their favorite dude, Chad. This is why Burrito adores you!

I noticed Honey B rocking and Lucky got the blanket car out of the driveway…were they upset at not getting enough time with you, orxwas it “happy, breakfast-time” excitement?
I see that the ladies on Burrito’s side of the house have their own Mall-walking routine

Hi Linda! It’s hard to say why they rock or scoot since they can’t tell us exactly what’s going on , but we can makes guesses through observation. They have been known to rock/scoot when frustrated and anxious, but we have also seen them do it when they’re excited and happy.

        Thanks, Chad!
I’m choosing to go with “excited and happy!”
(I noticed that since WWS staff said Lucky scooted when stressed, people have interpreted it to mean “it always means that”, but I wondered. I know Annie’s rocking can mean both).

So much for easing into your work day. Whew! I’m exhausted, just watching you, Chad! On the positive side, think of all the money you save because clearly you don’t need a gym membership.

Burrito looked like he was just sitting there waiting for your arrival. His excitement was palpable. He definitely sees you as his favorite BFF. What an honor. But I didn’t realize the boys on the flipside also see you as their favorite BFF. Clearly, you’ve been accepted into the Guy Club. And it is peculiar that only the guys put you through the workout. While you were getting your heart radio, it was fun to watch what the girls were doing in the background.

    Never a dull moment!

That last line should read : While you were getting your heart rate up, it was fun to watch what the girls were doing in the background.
