Greenhouse time

November 3, 2010 by Elizabeth

The chimpanzees were closed out of their outdoor area for most of the morning while J.B. and volunteers Dakotta and Jonathan put the greenhouse panels on for the winter.

Third side:

The weather has been a little chilly lately, so the chimps haven’t been spending as much time outside as usual. It was nice to see everybody flood out of the building as soon as they were given the opportunity. As I write this, most of the chimps are out in the greenhouse, lying on the top platform of the climbing structure in a big grooming huddle.

Good job J.B., Dakotta and Jonathan. Did ya’ll have to cut a few new panels, as in picture #3.? How long does it take to get everything in place?

Looks like a jigsaw puzzle! Glad the chimps will be keeping warm!

Thanks guys for your help!! That’s back-breaking work and it is so much appreciated by all of us that love these chimps!! Looks like you’ll have another sunny day tomorrow (Thursday) and rain is coming back on Friday.

Don’t you just love the Pacific Northwest! We’ve got green, rain, autumn leaves and snow. The most important thing being “we have chimps”! 🙂

You all are awesome! The chimps sure enjoyed the greenhouse last year and I know they are looking forward to being outside in it this winter. The lengths you all, and the volunteers, go to in order to make these chimps happy is truly heartwarming. Especially to those of us who love the 7.

Mmmmmm, cozy! No wind, plentiful thermal gain, and protection from rain and snow. The greenhouse is such a great gift to the chimps! I love it that they seemingly knew exactly what good thing was happening for them as they watched the panels go up. 🙂

Candy – We didn’t have to cut any new panels this year. We stored them all in the barn over the summer and now we’re just putting the puzzle back together. With the help of a couple great volunteers, it only takes about half a day to get them back on.
