Chimp ID: Negra

November 3, 2013 by Elizabeth

Today we conclude our series of blog posts on chimpanzee identification with Negra. (If you missed the posts about Annie, Burrito, Foxie, Jamie, Jody, or Missy, click on their names.)

Negra is the oldest of the chimps at the sanctuary, and because of her wise and regal air, we call her our Queen. Negra has a mostly dark face with white freckles on her chin and in her ears:

She is missing the top half of her left ear:

She has more bottom lip than she knows what to do with:

She’s a big lady with an ample belly:

Here you can see how her girth compares with Jody’s:

She loves to relax with a blanket draped over her head:

And she worships the sun:

Negra, that ample belly just proves your the Queen! There are more than a few of us out here that have that same trait of the belly! 😉 You look so serene while worshiping the sun! Love you and ALL the Cle Elum Seven! 😀

Why do so many of the Babys have like pieces of their ears
gone, or have a notch out of them ????

Hi Missy! It’s normal for chimpanzees to have occasional fights with other chimpanzees. When the chimps came to us in 2008, many of them were missing parts of fingers, toes, or ears, presumably from fights with other chimps during their time in research labs.

What a gorgeous and regal queen! Glad she is able to finally enjoy the warmth of the sun !

She is a worthy Queen! She is so very beautiful – I have the credit card with her photo on it with the blanket over her head and get many comments on it which gives me the opportunity to tell all about the Cle Elum 7 and the travesty visited upon Chimps in labs.
They are all very beautiful in their own way – each with their own special attributes!

Can’t tell you how much I have enjoyed and appreciated the “Chimp ID” posts! Wish I could refer to them all in one place. I can relate to Negra — I too love to sleep with a blanket over my head and I am a total sun worshiper! Negra is lovely. Thanks for letting me get to know her better. : )

    Hail to Queen Negra!
