You can build a chimp a ladder…

April 16, 2026 by Anna

Remodeling a chimpanzee enclosure for accessibility comes with a whole set of new challenges. Namely, you have to contend with a chimp who still makes her own decisions.

Well, Neggie likes what she likes. I wonder if she would benefit from a ramp.

Still, watching Neggie ascend the stairs, I can appreciate how hard it is for her to use her back legs. Her mind still seems sharp, and I surmise that she is still fond of her peanuts and night-bags.

    I love her.

    Beautiful Queen,
    As always, you are Magnifique!

Haha, I know I’ve seen her use those stairs before… but it’s funny when she does it more after you’ve built something new for her. Good to see most of the gang together again!
I see Foxie is still quality control inspector, testing out the new ladder!

You have given her what she didn’t have before she arrived at the sanctuary, a choice. How great that she still has that freedom in her senior years. Love you, your Royal Majesty.

Made me LOL! “Don’t tell me what to do!” A lady after my own heart.

I think Negra was waiting until she really needed those stairs. Why climb stairs when you can make a real entrance by swinging in?! Stairs and ladders are for sissies and old people. When you are the Queen appearances matter.

I hope the new ladder passed inspection by Foxie!

I love how she tested the stability of the post before making
her move. So smart and cautious.

Neggie does things her way; I can respect that!

hope you don’t mind me posting this here. I just got this email from gorilla doctors. those of you with Netflix I thought you might be interested…

It is an exciting day in the world of mountain gorilla conservation:

A Gorilla Story: Told by David Attenborough, premieres on Netflix — bringing the remarkable history of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and the iconic Pablo group to a global audience.

?In honor of this, we’re taking you into the field for a deep dive on the health history of Pablo group — a gorilla family whose story might have been very different without the life-saving interventions of Gorilla Doctors…
