Annie’s 51st Birthday!

September 10, 2025 by Kelsi

Today we celebrated Annie’s 51st birthday! Today’s party menu was really fun, all planned by our very own Dr. Erin Zamzow.

  • Obviously Sunflowers for Annie!
  • Lettuces bowls filled with rice noodles, tofu, green onions, cucumbers, red peppers, purple cabbage, with a drizzle of peanut sauce! (Annie and Foxie loved these bowls)
  • Heads of lettuce & bok choy
  • Lychee, Dragon fruit, & grapes were in the bowls or spread around as well!
  • And sparkling cider, to top it all off!

I honestly can say, I can’t believe Annie is 51, I hope I age as gracefully as she has! I love celebrating Annie because she is a quieter chimp. Annie is the type of chimp that is usually busy with her chimp friends and does not demand a lot from her caregivers. One could say she is a little bit more low key, which is why she deserves a big party to celebrate her. Annie is a genuinely sweet soul, she has many different layers to her, but to her core she is a gentle and kind, unless she is grooming, she is not so gentle then ;). It has been an honor to watch Annie turn 51 and see her flourish in sanctuary. Though she may be lower ranking, every year we watch Annie become more comfortable, a little bolder, and more content.

I also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Paulette for generously sponsoring Annie’s birthday party today!

Jenna went out this morning to get more sunflowers from a local farm, you can never have too many sunflowers!

Annie and Foxie pretty much had a private party out on Young’s Hill, while everyone else foraged in the Greenhouse. Look out for the party video tomorrow!

Oh my goodness, Annie’s noodles blowing in the breeze!
It looks like she wasn’t expecting them!
What did they think of the tofu?
Sounds like a fun menu, Dr Erin!
And even though we don’t have pics, I’ll bet Neggie took a sunflower or two back to her nest!

Thank you, Kelsi. The sunflowers are beautiful, the pictures are great and the menu sounds like, “I’ll have seconds, please.” Wish I had a doctor like that to plan my birthday party.

Your description of Annie’s personality makes her even more lovable. I’m sure there’s a bit of her in you, otherwise you would not be doing the work you are doing in life. Thank you.

Beautiful Annie. I wish her a happy birthday for her, a woman of a certain age. I wish her a happy new year of living, bird call imitations, and putting her DVM degree to good use when Burrito needs his tummy rubbed.

Dear, sweet Annie……she has such a lovely face and temperament. I don’t think anyone can believe that she’s 51! Of course, I love all the chimps for their own unique personalities, but I’ve enjoyed every moment of Annie’s progress over the years…..she’s been so brave and I’m so proud of what she’s achieved, so she has a special place in my heart. What a wonderful party……it looks fabulous and the photos show how much she enjoyed her birthday, even if the noodles did put up a bit of a fight! Thank you all, and especially Dr Erin for all the hard work you put in to make it such fun.

Aw. I love that Foxie escorted Annie out to her own private al fresco party. 51? Dang Annie looks amazing!

Thank you Dr. Erin and everyone so very much for the extra efforts on planning and executing this party and all celebrations. You constantly amaze me!

Sending Happy Birthday wishes to the one and only, Annie chimpanzee. Can’t wait to see the video but all these photos will happily hold me over. The menu is incredible! Tofu, veggies, rice noodles with a touch of peanut sauce—Dr. Erin, you planned a fantastic party! Thank you for making Annie’s birthday so special. Sunflowers galore + freshly cut extras because you never have too many sunflowers (thanks Jenna!). Bonus…it looks like it was a gorgeous day!! Thank you to everyone involved at the sanctuary and those from afar, like you Paulette.

To Annie, may you always be young at heart and may you continue to blossom!
