Elephants Strike Back

June 21, 2025 by Jenna

Cy is scared of many things that he finds in his books and magazines. If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you’re no stranger to this. Elephants is one of the things Cy is scared of. When he sees a picture of one, he will alarm call.

Yesterday, he had a picture book of animals, which he thoroughly enjoyed. However, once he discovered the elephants, he began to alarm call. Chimpanzees do this naturally to warn their group of potential danger.

His group members always respond to his alarm calls, but quickly realize it’s a false alarm once they see him reading his book. However, they will usually offer him reassurance.

Terry, on multiple occasions, has ripped up the scary pictures for him and pushed them through the caging so Cy can’t bring them back in. This specific occasion, highlighted in today’s video, was no exception. Terry ended up identifying the scary image of the elephant and giving it to Diana when he saw her so she could have it.

I’m the same way when reading a good thriller.

      XXXOOO

Aw, Gordito and Terry are such good friends!
And li’l Dora, what an instrument of destruction!
Kelsi, I’m glad Gordito knows he has a friend in you!

I know Dora was looking at her reflection, but she seemed to be saying, “Why doesn’t he just walk away.” Dora would be a librarian’s worse nightmare chewing up books. Thanks Terry for removing the scary elie.

imnew here, was Cy born in the wild? I mean has he seen a live elephant sometime in his past?

He was born in captivity! I’m not sure if he saw elephants at his former home, Wildlife Waystation. They had large cats, but unsure about elephants.

Hi Saundra. go to the CSNW website and read Cy’s bio to learn all about him. He loves to read, is crazy for photos of StanleyTucci (yep, believe it) but has fear of other photos.

Thanks, it does say he was at Wildlife Waystation, and they did have elephants at one time. Do we know if those times overlapped? and, that’s maybe where he saw an elephant?

Hi Saundra! Cy also alarm calls at images cows he sees in his books. But I don’t believe he’s afraid of the cows that he shares the property with. And it’s not just animals that cause Cy to alarm call. Believe it or not, Cy alarm calls when he sees plaid fabric patterns! (Think plaid shirts!) Dear sweet Cy is quite a character. We’ll never truly know why an image in book scares him, but he’s very lucky to have Terry as his official no nonsense page-ripper-outer!

He’s never seen a hippo or a live Scooby Doo, either, but he’s still afraid!

So I open my Daily Blog email and the first thing I read is “Cy found an elephant in his book and alarm called to warn his group!”. Am I a bad person for smiling over this? I love Cy’s soft steady alarm calls (as opposed to Annie’s piercing calls after seeing a snake on Young’s Hill!). As scared as he may be, like reading any good thriller, Cy cannot put his book down! He’s scared and he’s brave. 🙂

With all the excitement, Dora eats her book and Lucky looks chill watching Gordo play with Kelsi. Both Dora and Lucky seem to saying “Boys!”.

That video reminded me of the song “I get by with a little help from my friends” which sure rang so true when Cy’s pals reassured him. Loved it that Cy still held on to the scary magazine regardless. Thanks for sharing yet another adpect if Cy’s behaviour. I do wonder how this fesr of elephants started with him.?

I enjoyed this video so much! Just wondering if you sometimes try to give Dora a veggie or fruit to distract her from eating printed pages of magazines? Does eating the paper cause any digestive or bowel issues for her? I know you folks feed them very nutritious meals and snacks.
