Nest Envy or Snuggling Up?

September 15, 2024 by Diana

The security cameras continue to be insightful as well as entertaining, catching so much that we would otherwise miss.

We’ve actually be doing a bit of an experiment these last several days and having Willy B sleep solo in order to cut down on the drama during the night and in the early mornings.

It’s worked well as a temporary measure, and it’s been interesting to see how the other chimpanzees navigate his separation. Rayne’s first nest in this video was right next to the Mezzanine where Willy B was sleeping that night. I wondered if she was signaling some sort of alliance or wanted to keep tabs on him. In the end, I think the blanket that Lucky had found for her nest looked too enticing for Rayne to stay in her original nest. Or maybe she wanted to be super close to her friend Lucky.

I almost forgot! This Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. PT / 8:00 p.m. ET the North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance and Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest are having our 4th discussion about the docuseries Chimp Crazy. We’ll be discussing the fourth and final episode of the series (Fantasy Island), and we have a very special guest who will be joining us – Ana Paula Taveres, CEO of Save the Chimps! Ana Paula will be able to tell us all about Tonka’s new life in sanctuary! Register to join the discussion by zoom.

Understandable….Luvky is much quieter at night/early morning!

Nest envy? I don’t think so. I’m guessing that Rayne needed some company, either to tell ghost stories or share some gossip. After all, it appears that Raynie had to arise oin the middle of the night to pay a visit to Willy B. Willoughby.

    “Workin’ on those night moves…”

On a chilly Northwest evening it is nice to have lots of blankets AND a warm body to snuggle up next to. It is clear an early morning hooting alarm clock did not make Lucky leave, not even budge.

I thought it was definitely snuggling. Gave me a warm feeling, and my sense was that they felt the same.

Perhaps it’s a little bit of both. Rayne wanted Lucky’s blankets AND she decided it was nice to cozy up to her friend for the night. In the middle of the big nest move, was that Willy B hooting in the background?

If chimps get up in each other’s faces when eating and this behavior is called food peering (right?!), what would you call Rayne eyeballing peacefully sleeping Lucky? Nest peering?! 🙂 Rayne was like Snoopy pretending to be a vulture. I was laughing and couldn’t tell if Lucky just slept through it all. Rayne was soooo uncomfortably close to sleeping Lucky! Very funny spying in the night with active Rayne and slumber land Lucky.

I hope a little bit of alone time will make Willy B more comfortable moving forward. I’m keeping the faith that Willy B will learn from his best bud Cy and, with more time, he’ll figure out this whole social behavior thingy.

That last high pitched bit at the end of the hoot sounds like Willy B. Wonder what he’s been up to at night that he’s incomunicado

Definately snuggling with your buddy is better than trying to stay close to Willy B when there’s a wall separating you anyway. My heart breaks for Willy B because of his continued disruptive behavior but appreciate that you’re trying to help the entire family. These security cam peeks are great, please continue to post them.

Oh, Willy! What sort of ruckus have you been causing during the nighttime, I wonder.
As for Rayne and Lucky, it definitely looks like Rayne was peering enviously at Lucky’s wonderfully lush nest. Alas, Lucky was not willing to vacate, so Rayne had to settle for an impromptu slumber party with her bud!

Maybe it was just two nests are better than one…
sweet to see them snuggled together.

I’m very biased towards my pal Raynee, so I’d vote for “snuggling attempt”.
And I’m eager to watch your online discussion about the 4th episode of Chimp Crazy!

I think Rayne just couldn’t sleep. so she first tries to drag her blankets over to Lucky and see if that helps. it doesn’t so she gets up and gets some more blankets. then maybe she falls asleep for a little bit but she gets up and goes outside and then comes back in. She just could not sleep and everybody else was asleep and there’s nothing more annoying when you’re trying to sleep and everyone else is asleep and you’re awake!
