Happy 4th of July everyone! The chimps here at CSNW had a day full of fun and food! Longtime volunteer caregiver Patti made the chimps vegan ‘hotdogs’ out of carrots, while caregiver Ellen made them a shortcake out of their usual chow biscuits, fruit and whipped cream from coconut milk.
If you are celebrating today, we hope you all have a fun and safe holiday this year!
Diane Kastel says
The grunting, chomping, and crunching sounds are delightful to hear!

Happy 4th to everyone!
What a celebration, I love how excited they get for food, all those happy faces.
Sweet Negra was VERY happy about those hotdog buns !
Linda C says
So was Beezus!
Kathleen says
So was Cy!
Linda C says
emEvery time I see Neggie with something she likes, inside, I’m shouting “Neggie! move on to the next one while you’re eating that one! you’ll get more!’
I hope she got some corn too. It doesn’t quite seem like a party until you see the corn on her belly.
It almost seemed like Burrito was afraid you were trying to take away his berries!
The fireworks are just beginning here, and someone in my neighborhood who has been setting them off for 2 days is getting wound up. I can see them from my living room window through a break in the trees.
Kathleen says
2:23 Neggie next to Jody’s turtle pool grabbing fistfulls of corn. 😉
Linda C says
Aw, thank you! Will go back and watch again!?
Gaynell says
Yes, please, I’ll have a serving of everything on today’s menu. How yummy. Negra, I’ll trade you a hot dog bun for another piece of chow cake with berries. Happy July 4th, everyone.
Linda C says
I’ll give you my chow cake, Gaynell, but I’m keeping the berries!
fireworks going off on all sides now. two blocks away off the deck, down the hill in another Direction off the deck, and two blocks away at the front of the house. and I can hear the ones from the city even though I can’t see them
Gaynell says
Sounds like a deal, Linda. We’re having a heat wave in Portland. Lots of folks heading out later to the cool breezes at the river and 10pm fireworks. i can’t stop thinking of chow cake.
Susan Kathleen Feeley says
Happy 4th July to you all over there and from the squeals and pant hoots of delight that celebration party went off with a huge bang. Patti, those vegan hot dogs sure were a winner and made me feel quite hungry. Thankyou, everyone for sharing this special day with us and I do hope that the human chimps also celebrated in style.
Margaret says
i so love to see parts of the various parties the chimpanzies celebrate. Happy 4th of July my friends.

What great parties you all throw! This was particularly great fun due to the sheer excitement everybody showed, from sounds to hugging. And the food all looked delicious!
Kathleen says
As always, no matter what the occasion, the staff and volunteers throw the very best parties! The carrot hot dogs cracked me up, well done! I am assuming they were cooked carrots because the crunch was muted. But the buns are always the hit. My favorite are your berry shortcakes. Brilliant!
Was this the first time Cy had watermelon? I know you serve it every summer but Cy, while inspecting that big chunk on the floor, appeared as if he was unsure what it was. And then his tooth sunk into it and, as we have all experienced, the juicy juice gushed out and Cy looked very pleased with his big watermelon piece.
Everyone’s food squeaks and chirps and groans were far better than the snaps, bangs, and booms from the fireworks. Thank you everyone who came in today to celebrate with the chimps.
Here’s to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all living creatures.
Susan Kathleen Feeley says
Beautifully stated, Kathleen, I couldn’t have said it better myself. Happy 4th July to you.

I am always heartened to see Queen Negra and Her Royal Subjects enjoying a feast regardless of the occasion. I so hope that Her Queendom can secede from the United States come next January when, as a result of the SCOTUS decision on Monday, the President may rule without constraint. My only hope is that Jamie still has my application to take refuge at CSNW somewhere in her filing cabinet.
Nancy Duryea says
I’ll be submitting my applicatiion also.
Anne Gardner says
This has made my day, happy chimps carrying party plates and seeing how much they can stuff in their mouths at once, Terry all fluffed up with excitement, marvellous! You put on a fabulous party for them. ?
Eli says
Listen to all of those food squeaks and grunts! Just THE best sound in the WORLD. Love seeing their different styles during forages. Burrito, Neggie, and Gordo with their “stuff your face” strategy, sweet Annie with her impeccable mealtime manners, and Terry with the “grab ‘n go.” Of course, Missy was the first one to get the food left up high!!!
That was one excited Honey B!!! I think she may have been more excited than the boys were!
Linda C says
I feel like they leave those winsow aill plates specifically for Missy and Jamie, they way they’ll leave things at Negra’s cabin on an outdoor forage or on “her” stump. Just another of the special things they do
