Do Chimpanzees Like Snow?

December 3, 2023 by Diana

Snow (eating) season has arrived! Burrito’s group knows what it’s all about. Cy’s group I would say is still acclimating to the winters we have here compared to outside of LA where they lived for most of their lives. It’s warming up over the next few days, so we’ll see who braves the snowy outdoors!

Glad to hear of the warmup, Diana!

Foxie has never seemed so tiny! Why do I get the feeling that there was some warm tea served this afternoon?

Another thing I noticed, after watching some 11-13 yr old videos, is that Missy’s gray spot on her back is much less obvious than it used to be…it’s darkening.

Thank you for the vidro of the first (or second?) snow snack of the season!

That’s an interesting observation, Linda! I’ll have to go back and look now too.

Moving to the Pacific Northwest from sunny southern Califirnia, i’m in Cy’s group when it comes to adjusting to the cold. But, I love snowcones.

I loved this. And I can’t remember: have the chimps actually gone out into the snow and played in it, chasing each other and throwing it?

Can I make a request? I have an experiment I would love to see done. I wonder what would happen if you guys went outside and a) they watched you build a snowman, and b) they watched you have an actual snowball fight. I wonder if they might emulate that once they saw y’all doing it. Do you think they would since they love to emulate wearing clothing from humans?

Cheers. I am SNOWWWW jealous of you right now! ?:snowman::green_heart::blue_heart:

      I wanted them to demo
sledding and then give them sleds or saucers, but then I realized that they could run into the fences, so that wouldn’t be a good idea. But 1 or 2 yrs ago, they did do some sledding so the chimps could see them (but chimpypeople don’t like wet hands. Watch Annie walk bipedally through the snow)

Ellen and Amanda built a snowman on the hill yesterday, and at least Jamie watched from the greenhouse. We often build snowmen near the raceway. And Jamie seems to have the idea of throwing snow down pat – she’s been doing a bit of that lately towards the humans already this season.

Every day really is an adventure!!

Dear Burrito, always joyful. Missy approached that big mound of snow so delicately, digging into a specific section within the mound. Glad to see the queen got her share too!

I figured Bubs would be excited. That boy is just crazy about snow.
I’m glad The Boss decided to share the snowy treasure this time! Everyone got a bit!

We can certainly see the size difference in Jamie and Foxie in this video. The chimps seem to embrace every season…..Spring grass, Summer forages, Fall scenery from tne climbing structures and Winter snow snacks. Underfloor heating and warm tea will be welcomed by Cy’s group, I’m sure!
