The Harvest

September 29, 2023 by Anna

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a brief photo caption about the sunflowers growing on Young’s Hill:

The Sunflowers that volunteered on Young’s Hill are still going strong. As the blooms start to go to seed, I imagine their days out there are numbered…

Well I wasn’t wrong. Look what I found this morning tucked neatly into the folds of a nest in the Greenhouse:

My first suspect, based on a past pattern of sunflower collecting behavior and nest location has got to be Negra. Let me present my evidence to the court of public opinion.

Exhibit A: Negra is a known sunflower collector (photo from September 2018):

Exhibit B: One of Negra’s favorite nesting locations just so happens to be the same spot the sunflowers were found…

The prosecution (and defense) rests:

Bonus! Chilly days call for added layers. Jamie sporting a lavender sheet:

We, the Jury, find the defendant, Her Majesty, Queen Negra, abscond with the sunflowers in question, but that she can only be convicted of being to cute and adorable.

In Neggie’s defense she’s only looking to eat them….unload them and double her supply for next year:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Neggie, you little beauty. Smart, creative and as Tobin rightly put it you could only be convicted of being cute and adorable!

Neggie is the Queen, so I think she’s just exercising her royal right to them. Maybe it’s similar to all swans belonging the the Queen? All sunflowers belong to Negra.

Oh Anna, well done! So funny. What surprises me is that Negra had those two big sunflowers tucked safely into her nest all night and yet she didn’t eat all the seeds?! And, she left them behind for someone else to discover them?! Explain that one to me. 🙂

If you can collect any viable seeds, a nice patch of sunflowers (I can’t remember if there are any extant) at Jody’s gravesite would be in order. In fact the sunflower would make a nice addition to the logo–a chimp’s face on the left, a sunflower on the right. It would add some nice yellow color and might elicit inquiries from the public.

Anna, she probably tucked it away there in case she didn’t like what was being offered for breakfast the next morning.
