All Around the Raspberry Bush

July 25, 2023 by Chad de Bree

When caregivers are assigned to be the lead caregiver on a certain day, one of our first tasks is to “open up” the Chimp House. For me, this is one of the best times of day because it’s still early in the morning and some residents are still not fully awake. Case in point: Negra

To walk in the morning to see Negra still in bed, you kind of watch in real time what kind of mood she will be in that particular day. And yes. She has been in a really good mood today.

Since she was in a good mood upon awakening, and because today’s high temperature in Central Washington is 70º, it was a perfect day for a lunch forage on Young’s Hill. As of this typing (almost dinner time), they have been going on and off Young’s Hill looking for anything they may have missed. On today’s forage menu was: baby iceberg lettuce heads, prickly pears, and sweet potatoes.

Missy does the same

Negra: (Iceberg) Head Hunter

With everybody in high spirits, it was also a great day to set up a browse of raspberry branches! Jamie could not have been more content!

And just like the chimpanzees’ night bags, here is a final treat of bonus photos to end today’s blog!

Rayne fishing for cherry tomatoes yesterday

Gordo keeping an eye on the medical staff during a tour after Willy B’s procedure yesterday

And finally, this guy! If you look carefully, you can find an “Easter egg” within this photo

Great photos galore! I just loved the one of Neggie warming her backside on the rock outdoors, surveying the state of things. I was glad to see her sitting on the grass in a later pic since I thought maybe her “queen-ness” was getting in the way of her forage. Glad it didn’t. I’m so glad they had a good day (like, every day!!). And gotta say, that pic of Neggie in her carefully crafted nest all bundled up with her eyes slightly open is just a treasure!

70 degrees sounds like heaven, Chad!
But it’s occurred to me that with 9 more chimpy people around, you’re gonna need a bigger berry bush! Several!

Oh, my goodness, every day is a holiday for the chimps and thank you for once again sharing these gorgeous photos. ( loved the one of Negra under the blanket). I think I finally spotted the Easter egg but won’t say where ( spoiler alert). Surprised there were any eggs left!
Enjoy the sunshine and have fun.

Seeing Negra in bed brings to me the feeling I always had with my children. As I always have been the earliest riser, I would go into their rooms to wake them and find them all curled up sleepy under blankets. Such a warm and peaceful sight…

Hi Marcie – He returned to his group yesterday morning and we expect to hear back from the cardiologist and the lab over the next couple of weeks.

Those must be special moments, arriving first thing in the morning to catch some sleepyheads still in bed. Perhaps Negra started her morning in a good mood because she knew there would be baby iceberg lettuce heads on the menu today. I have to add that I can’t imagine Negra in anything but a good mood! Funny how everyone seems to love lettuce.

Love the photo series of Negra (Iceberg) Head Hunter and Jamie enjoying her raspberry browse. Last photo….I’m not seeing the Easter egg, perhaps because I can’t take my eyes off Burrito.

Hope Willy B is recovering comfortably. I am thinking of him.

These pictures are beautiful. Negra sleeping and Burrito looking right at the camera! So sweet. Thank you Chad. So glad it was such a lovely day for everyone!
