Simple Pleasures

May 17, 2022 by Sofia Castro-Loza

Today is all about the simple pleasures in life. I learned a lot about my caregiver coworkers when I briefly interviewed them for their simple pleasures. Kelsi told me that her simple pleasures include sitting by the ocean, listening to Jody make dinosaur noises when she is very excited about food, and a nice quiet walk around the hill with Jamie. When I asked Katelyn she responded that hers is being out in the woods alone. JB’s simple pleasure is walking their dogs Abby and Benny, and Diana’s simple pleasure is tending to her growing collection of houseplants. Anthony’s simple pleasures are iced coffee and going on road trips. Grace mentioned hers were reading a good book in silence and having a good margarita…also in silence. Raise your hand if you just added these last two to your own list! When I asked Chad for his simple pleasures he responded saying his were the sound of rain, Rayne, and Burrito, of course. Some of mine are fresh clean sheets, and going to sleep listening to the calls of the Puerto Rican native coquí frogs (Eleutherodactylus coqui) back home or through a playlist.

Gordo has a few simple pleasures we have all noticed since his arrival. Some of these are hanging out in the green houses, sitting in boxes, eating all kinds of produce, and the love of his life: Mave.

Terry likes staring at caregivers boots, laying and grooming with Mave, having the “bros” all back together and kissing the back of his caregivers hands.

Mave’s simple pleasure is hanging out with Dora and happily over-grooming everyone.

Rayne’s simple pleasures are drinking her delicious morning smoothies and nesting high up in the leaf structures of the play rooms. Here she is grooming herself in the platform of Oakwood green house.

Willy B’s simple pleasure is nesting with his leopard blanket, food, and watching videos on cellphones.

Thanks for the nice post and photos, Sofia. Some of my simple pleasures are reading, scenic road trips, camping, natures scents, cuddling with dogs, and listening to the rain.

Thanks for these great simple pleasures & photos. I have to admit one of mine is scrolling through old blog posts from the sanctuary & seeing pictures of the chimps doing whatever they’re doing. Another, sans chimps, is sitting reading a good book and sipping tea and then drifting off for a nice nap. And then there’s llistening to the robins chirping away this time of year. Thanks for the opportunity to think about this, Sofia! I guess even thinking about simple pleasures is also its own simple pleasure since such lovely feelings and thoughts are evoked!

I don’t know how “Simple” my pleasure is, but it involves reading the CSNW blog and looking at the photographs and videos of my endlessly fascinating, adorable, beautiful friends who have been provided sanctuary at the Sanctuary. I am just now taking a break from writing a letter to a friend who said that the chimpanzees of Cle Elum are “adorable” (I send her pictures of the cattle and chimps and relate stories about them in my correspondence; in today’s letter, I will be showing pictures of the chimps’ love of lilacs…as well as detailing Burrito’s irreverent disregard for the Scientific Method as documented in the 4.16.21 blogpost). Today’s blog posting and photographs are no less a delight. I am heartened to read that Gordo has found true love in the lovely Mave, and that Terry shares Jamie’s appreciation for proper footwear.

Need to hear (and see) more of this Mave & Gordo romance! Wasn’t aware they were an item. Sweet Mave deserves a good man-chimp.

Simple pleasures and cheap thrills are always the best. For me, reading the blog and learning about each chimpanzee as well as the bovines is definitely a favorite simple pleasure. And being with my beloved silly dog tops the list. Oh, and like Grace I enjoy a handmade margarita but mine are never consumed in silence.

It was fun reading about everyone’s simple pleasures. Great idea Sofia!

I’m going seasonal with my simple pleasure. I love the night noises, especially when the cicadas make their appearance. Bliss!

Fresh clean sheets is also one of mine, as well as listening to the frogs and toads at our pond each evening, watching birds come to our feeders, and watching my plants grow and bloom each spring and summer.

A daily dose of this blog is one of my simple pleasures, especially posts whioch somehow feature my girl MAVE. Gordo is a smart guy if he’s in love with Mave! Cat pictures on Twitter are high on my list of simple pleaures, too, and I am in love with Jorts the Cat (and Jean). Another Twitter account I love is about Rufus the kunekune pig. So you can see where this is trending, right?

i love this post! I am specially intrigued about this Mave and Terry romance!!!! Oh and Gordo sitting in his box does not get much better than that! I think I will steal many simple pleasures I have read about and add hanging out with my hubby, walking our dogs, taking a stroll around my garden and being still, watching the quiet life around me with the chirppingbof birds and buzzing of bees. Oh and Chocolate with Peanut butter ice cream!!!

My simple pleasure is sitting out front at sunrise drinking my coffee and sketching! Thanks to your sanctuary these beautiful souls can actually experience their simple pleasures in life! You are all my heroes and I thank you for everything you do!

The chimps and you all are my number one simple pleasure. A close second is searching for sea glass along the beach. Several of you mentioned clean fresh sheets. My sheets are VERY different. I have small fiber neuropathy so my skin burns from head to toe. (no worries, my pain is well managed) So I have a plush blanket under me, a plush blanket over me, and pillowcases made from a plush blanket. They’re delicious! and very high on my list of simple pleasures.

Mine is being outside and reading a bit each day, whether outside, or in bed for an extra hour at night/in the morning.
A café con leche with my Aroma del cielo coffee.
And Sofía, last time I was in San Juan, they asked if I required anything, and I asked for them to bring one of the lobby coquís up to my room, because all I could hear was the generator from the roof of the restaurant!

my simple pleasures include a twice baked potato with blue cheese dressing, a chocolate chip cookie blizzard and taking them to eat in bed while watching a chick flick!

Perfect simple pleasure would be: a long, quiet bath (as opposed to a short/noisy one??) followed by getting into bed with freshly cleaned sheets and reading while listening to the rain outside.
