strolling through the years

October 23, 2021 by Diana

I had so many thoughts going through my head when I was taking the walk in the video above.

I believe that the true beauty in this world is in these small, transitory moments and recognizing how quickly time passes. I feel it with the seasons too. I see the leaves changing, their colors taking my breath away, understating that a big part of the spectacular beauty is knowing that their display will soon be gone, and the next season, the next year, the next decade, will arrive before I even have time to process that one moment in time.

It’s cliche, but life is brief. We are so fortunate to have this outlet of the blog to capture and share the small moments and invite you to take a minute to appreciate them with us.

If you subscribe to our e-newsletter, you should have received an email this week that included information about National Estate Planning Awareness Week. This week is all about acknowledging the briefness of life and preparing for the future.

We are so grateful to be able to honor supporters and supporters’ loved ones in various ways at the sanctuary, including receiving some legacy gifts that have helped care for the chimpanzees. As I said in that email, whether or not you include Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest in your estate planning, I do hope you will take advantage of the free tools we offer to create your will and set up your estate in whatever way you desire.

Take a moment to do something really important–you won’t regret it.

Back to those precious fleeting moments, I give you Gordo in a box:

What a gift it must be to walk — and live — aside people like Jody, Annie, Jamie, Burrito and Foxie, and in the autumnal beauty of the Cascades. As always, Diana, I am grateful to you, J.B., Steve LaChapelle and others who rescued them and Negra and Missy and brought them into a life where they could actually live.

Meanwhile, it appears that Senor Gordito Anciano (a/k/a “Gordo Graybeard”) might require a slightly larger cardboard vessel in which he can play sailor…I am reminded of the blog from a year ago this week entitled “Burrito in a Box”. Looks like there is a cardboard armada on the shores of the Yakima River…

Aw! Bubba and Foxie still doing their best to run down the hill, even with stiff joints! You have to love their spirit! I missed seeing Missy go racing by!
    Thanks, Diana!

And we soooo appreciate those small moments in time that you share with us. I think I can safely say that all of us look forward every day to these small moments of time where we can get a glimpse and live vicariously through you. it makes me so happy.

    Uh… I think we’re gonna need a bigger box!

Yes Diana, time passes too quickly. The older you get the faster time flies. How is this possible?! The small simple things often hold the most beauty and pleasure. Things like the way I can always spot Annie standing tall, love that about her. Jamie being an excellent troop leader waiting for Foxie and her two friends to catch up with everyone. And Young’s Hill is like one big yellow brick road. Oh so beautiful as far as the eye can see. Oz has nothing compared to CSNW. Thanks for letting me join the walk today.

Bonus Gordo! Ahoy matey! He’s too much. Must be a guy thing….Burrito digs his tub and box, Willy B likes the tub in his yard, and now Gordo too. Cracks me up.

I know that as long as I live, I’ll never, ever get tired of a chimpanzee in a box.

I like how Annie, in the first sequence, has to walk bipedally to get around the other two.

Diana, your words really said everything today. My mother has Alzheimers and each moment means so much, every minute means so much. It’s a time when roles are starting to reverse and I’m becoming the mother instead of the daughter and so often I ask myself where DID all those years go? We still talk and laugh together and lately I’ve started sharing your blogs and videos with her. She is enjoying them so much! The other day she thanked me for showing them to her and it was another moment we were able to share together.
The sanctuary has given these beautiful and well deserving chimps such a wonderful new life. If they only knew how much joy they give to so many! I will definitely share the photos of Gordo in a box with her. I have to admit he is really tugging at the old heart strings! Many happy moments to everyone!

It’s the time of year to get philosophical Diana…..I feel you!

And how gorgeous is that cuddly chimpman Gordo in his box….
I can see him think: “What are you laughing about?? NO I’m not bursting out of this most comfy box; its my own lazy chair…”

I wonder what Gordo is spying on in the first photo.
