Isn’t Sanctuary Life Grape?

September 20, 2021 by Sofia Castro-Loza

A million thanks to all Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest supporters that participated yesterday in our HOOT! For The Holidays virtual celebration to welcome the Lucky Six. We are all so grateful for the generous donations and bids because we surpassed our goal by plenty and more, assuring future plans to develop. Sanctuary life for these amazing 16 chimpanzees could not be possible without all of you amazing souls. We hope that learning more about the Lucky Six and their past brought everyone a bit closer to them.

To continue the celebration we harvested some grapes directly from our small vineyard and gave some to the chimps as an afternoon snack. Everyone was very excited about fresh grapes!

I walked to the green house and noticed this chimp lineup. Caregiver Katelyn had many sets of eyes looking at her while she harvested grapes from the vineyard.

Caregiver Katelyn serving Missy some grapes fresh from the vine.

Negra all cozy this morning in the green house. Thanks to everyone that has donated blankets, they certainly appreciate it!

Foxie coming in from Young’s Hill after enjoying a beautiful sunny day.

Gordo resting high up on the green house platform after a scrumptious lunch.

Mave looking into the camera while enjoying the breeze in the outdoor chute.

Rayne looking down from a platform in the green house with a wooden toy in her mouth.

Thanks for the wonderful pictures today, Those grapes look like a big hit !
Congrats on the auction, It was so fun, love the excitment of the Bid wars at the end, I think the sweet
Jamie ornament was the last item to close, I was watching, and kept yelling yeah! Every time someone bid again, and extended the time. Better than T.V.
Great fun, and for the best cause.:revolving_hearts:

I have houseguests galore but I watched part of HOOT and at one point ran out on the balcony to tell my guests “OMG the goal was $150k and we’re at $228k!!” (at the time). So exciting! Let’s rush to get the Bray and Ryan’s tower done! (aren’t the Young’s just so precious!). Can’t wait for the 9 to get out and about (hopeful thinking). It was nice to meet Kathleen on video! Love to all of you. You all brighten my every day.

Wow! Gorgeous grapes! No wonder everyone was so excited! I spy a boot in Neggie’s nest. Did Jamie leave a boot on the greenhouse loft or is our Queen now a boot lover too?!

I noticed the boot also. Negra certainly is royalty. It looks like she is watching over her kingdom.

To me it feels like our beloved Buddha Negra is just in the middle of her morning meditations.

Hi, Kathleen, I also saw the boot and wondered the same thing! I love those Neggie poses w/ the blankets pulled up over her head. It seems so snuggly and satisfying and does my heart good to see her able to relax so fully (now w/ a boot?) We’ll tune in for more…of course!

I’m with Negra. There is something warm, cozy and secure about being wrapped in a blanket.

Wonderful photos as always. I still have the ones of last year’s grape harvest…..the look of sheer pleasure on their faces is so precious, it’s clear they love their treats. Well done with the Hoot result……lovely to meet some of the people behind the names we know so well. Keith’s memory of Jamie laughing, and the lovely Young’s…..my heart broke along with her at the loss of their beloved son, but what a fantastic tribute to him. Whenever we see the chimps out on Ryan’s structure, we will remember him too.

Great pics and pun, Sofia! Yes, life is grape this time of year especially. Is that a smile of contentment I see on Gordo’s face? Certainly appears to be. And Mave — what a woman! I sometimes take pics w/ my phone so I can have pics of the chimps with me all the time. And it’s pretty frequently that I proselytize to others about the sanctuary and all its amazing beings (well, maybe not so much the rattlesnakes). The fundraiser’s success and all the new things happening are so exciting. So grateful to be a part of it all…words can’t even begin to express it.

Linda, I’ve saved so many of the best photos that I recently made up a photobook of my favourites, just for me, but it’s lovely to see all the precious faces whenever I want. However, I have a suspicion that I will end up with lots of them as I can’t resist those perfect portraits!!

To Diana and J.B. and the Young’s…
I made a notation ages ago that September 20, 2011 was the opening of Young’s Hill. Is this correct? If so, happy anniversary!! Ten years of sky above, grass below, and a million magical moments inbetween!!

Karen and Don, when I think of the significance of this gift I could cry. May the goodness in your hearts come back to you ten fold.
