Midday Siesta

August 25, 2021 by Sofia Castro-Loza

“Siestas” in Spanish originate from the Latin phrase “hora sexta” or sixth hour and suggest a brief midday rest after being up and about for six hours. In some areas in the Mediterranean siesta time is taken very seriously and can happen any time from noon to 5pm. During this time it is not unusual to find markets, stores, pharmacies with their doors closed to the public and a “be back in one hour sign”. Many parts of the world have incorporated these breaks into their daily lives and some studies conducted in the Mediterranean even show the relation between napping and good diet, healthier aging and having higher activity levels. Back home in Puerto Rico siestas are a big thing after work, school, or during lunch breaks and a Sunday afternoon without a nap is definitely not complete. The US has caught on and has come up with the term power naps and the chimps approve. Here at the sanctuary, there’s no specific time for nap time but personally it fills my heart to see individuals peacefully resting surrounded by their peers. I hope these fill your hearts as well!

Cy and Lucky resting in the front rooms

Dora resting in the front rooms

Foxie resting in the green house

Lucky about to nap

Negra resting in the green house

Rayne resting in the front room

Special shout out to all of those who have bought blankets from the wish list! We are still in need of more and as you all can see the chimps really appreciate them.

Sofia, thanks for the nice sentiments and great photos. Negra just captures my heart every time I see her snugging up in her blanket w/ it over her head. A few nights ago I woke up in the night being aware that the top of my head was cold. I immediately tought of Negra, of course, and pulled the covers up over my head for my last few hours of sleep. I highly recommend this for anyone interested in being snugged up in soothing comfort. Very cozy indeed! Neggie gets to claim it first!

    Buenas, Sofía!
either they’ve been purchaaed in 10 minutes, or the blamkets aren’t on the list.

do they all go out at the same time? or does it vary from chimp to chimp?

Also, are you still looking for the prima rocker?
I ordered one, and they said it shipped weeks ago, but your wish list still has the rocker on it. I just want to make sure that it arrived

Hi Linda! We got the rocker and Rayne really likes it! Hopefully, some photos will come soon!

Yay! Thanks for letting me know, Kelsi!
(tbh, I was hoping the Tiny One would get to give it a “spin”, too , but I’m happy it’s arrived and that someone is enjoying it!)

Ola Sofia! OK that’s about the extent of my Spanish LOL. when blankets were asked for a couple weeks ago I found a good deal for a batch of 24 sherpa style. So I couldn’t pass it up. They just haven’t arrived yet. so 24 supposedly arriving by September 3. that’s soon! Boy does time fly. I can’t believe it’s almost September.

I love all the little sleepyheads today! that’s my favorite pasttime? I have a neurological disorder that affects my skin and I don’t tolerate anything touching my skin. So this is about my 3 blankets: I have a supersoft fleece blanket under me, another over me, and a friend took a third one and made pillowcases for me! Oh it feels absolutely delicious!!

That sounds toasty, Paulette! when a friend gave me a sherpa a couple of years ago, I immediately thought of Neggie. And even though they said they had enough, I sent one. Soooo soft! The danger is I’m likely to fall asleep when I use one, instead of working!

Quick note about comments: Since we dont get notification of new comments any longer, I just wanted to suggest that we all go back a day or two each day to see if there’s any comments that we missed. I so enjoy the comments and I’m sure many of you do too. Tobin, both Kathleen and I left a comment for you on August 23. Just in case you missed them.

Awesome photos Sofia, thank you. Much as I love the “action” shots, these ones warm my heart as it shows them snoozing in perfect peace, knowing that they are safe, secure from any nasties and comfortable with plenty of space, whether they cuddle up with a friend or by themselves. I’m smiling at Foxie with her dolls always close by, and of course, dear Negra who can give us all advice on relaxation! Looks like the Lucky Six have all quickly got into the snooze routine.

Thank you, Sofia, for your beautiful photographs. The text is elucidating as well. Perhaps my
recent concerns about seeing Negra asleep during the daytime now have a plausible explanation: Neggie has heeded a recommendation from her Puerto Riquena caregiver and is now devoting afternoons to siestas and other strenous activities. Dulces suenos para todos.

Dear Negra defo looks like she’s “soñando con los angelitos”.

Excellent post Sofia! I always think of Negra being a blanket only (and lots of them!) nester but I see she has a firehose enrichment toy and a troll tucked in with her for her mid-day Siesta. By comparison, Cy and Lucky and Lucky on her own look like spartan nesters. Maybe Jamie needs to do a demo on how to stuff a nest full of beloved items, or maybe a lesson from Honey B on how to construct a fortress nest for an afternoon snooze hidden from the roving photographers.

And yes, it fills my heart to see everyone peacefully resting in their very own personal fashion.
