If we look straight and deep into a chimpanzee’s eyes, an intelligent self-assured personality looks back at us. If they are animals, what must we be?”
-Frans de Waal

Today is World Chimpanzee Day!
Several organizations within the sanctuary, zoo, education, and conservation worlds came together to create a day to honor our closest living relatives and to use the day to spread awareness of issues they face both in the wild and captivity.
July 14th was chosen as the honorary day because it was on this day in 1960, Jane Goodall first stepped foot in Tanzania to study chimpanzees. Though she had received backlash at first, her discoveries forced researchers to look at chimpanzees differently, and not just as another animal. From then, we have begun to truly see just how close of a living relative we are.
There are many things you can do to be an advocate for chimpanzees. You can donate to your favorite conservation organization, share your favorite sanctuary on social media, talk about your favorite chimpanzee to family, discuss what is a good social media post is and what is bad to friends, and the list goes on! To find out more about World Chimpanzee Day and how you can help, please check out World Chimpanzee Day!
We are truly honored as caregivers to know the 16 chimpanzees who call Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest home!

Thank you all to our followers and supporters for always supporting, advocating, and honoring these magnificent individuals!
That was a very interesting blog today. I love the comparisons to humans. I find it interesting
to hear that they new crew seems to have settled in quite nicely. I’m guessing having the other
chimps already there helps a lot. It is very exciting to hear that there is room for more chimps
already. You all have done such a nice job caring for them. They do seem happy. Thank you.
Good blog, great photos. Thank you. Always.
Happy World Chimpanzee Day! Wonderful pictures of wonderful souls!!?
I love following the blog. Thank you!
Thanks so much for these closeups, Chad. Oooohhhh, those eyes!! What else is there to say!? It’s soul to soul in those deep gazes, that’s for sure. What’s that old saying? “The eyes are the windows to the soul.” Definitely. Enough said.
That’s a ton of photos today, Chad! All 3 groups covered, too!
Soooo happy to see Willy B venturing into the grass!
Sweet corn will be on the menu for a while, it seems! And there ain’t one chimp complaining about that!
Lol, as my niece said when she sponsored my birthday, she feels like she’s getting to know them through me. And we don’t even talk that much! But my trainer, who adopted a relative’s baby in her 40’s (ie, no time to follow the blog herself), can identify half of them through pictures, or guess who did X this week, based on the updates I give her once a week! 😛
Happy Chimpanzee Day, all!
I am so glad — and we humans are so fortunate — that we live on a planet with our next of kin, pan Troglodytes. It is my dearest hope that, by the end of this century, there will be more chimpanzees — and bonobos, gorillas, orangutans and gibbons — living and flourishing in their natural habitats.
what will be the schedule for the sharing of Young’s Hill..?
Oh, and I forgot–wjat an amazing profile Rayne has!
And Terry! His fingers are at least twice as thick as his toes!!!
Happy World Chimpanzee Day to all. Thank you to everyone at CSNW for all of your dedication and hard work for the 16 beautiful Chimpanzees there and for the love and safety that you provide for them each and every day!
As Linda C remarked, I too, was stunned at the size of Terry’s fingers, he is a big guy! The lucky 6 seem to have settled in without any problems…so far. It shouldn’t be too much longer before they are introduced to Willy B, Honey B, and Mave, it will be interesting.
Very interesting blog. Great pictures!
Chad! You did a royal picture session. You must have gotten a photo of almost the full tribe. They are so photogenic and it is fun to see them playing, grooming and eating. Thank you for such a nice post!!
I must honor more than the chimpanzees, wild and captive, on World Chimpanzee Day….I feel I need to honor Dr. Jane Goodall (and the hope she gives us all) and every primatologist, caregiver, volunteer, student, advocate, etc., because where would chimpanzees be today without all of you. Thank you for opening our eyes, minds, and hearts to the world of our closest relatives.
Thank you Chad for todays photos. Lucky in a box! Eeeesh, can’t stop looking at the face.
Thank you for the great pictures of these very special beings.
To see all 16 Chimpanzees together at CSNW is truly thrilling. To be able to provide a place for them that is not merely a warehouse, or a shelter, but truly a forever home is something very special. I thank you all for what you do, and I’m proud to be a small part of it.
What lucky chimps to be living at CSNW!
My favorite pic was Jamie! So lovely <3 I’ve never seen her quite like that.
Awesome post Chad. Thank you!
When I was in high school, I did a book report about chimpanzees. And fell in love. But then, you know, you grow up, you get a job, life gets in the way of your interests at times. But now I’m retired and I’m so glad I found CSNW and found again my love for chimpanzees. Thank you to ALL of you caregivers, bloggers, and friends.
HAPPY WORLD
CHIMPANZEE DAY!
I think I’ll pop some popcorn and watch the chimpanzee movie tonight. Again:D
