Light Reading

July 16, 2021 by J.B.

Cy’s reaction to magazines still catches me off guard. Is someone food squeaking? Alarm barking? Oh, it’s just Cy looking at magazines again. We’re going to need a name for that vocalization.

Willy B continues to be the center of attention at the sanctuary. When he goes into the courtyard, the Seven hoot and holler, which causes the Lucky Six to respond, which in turn causes Willy B, Honey B, and Mave to call back. And around it goes. Eventually they all settle down. But it’s quite the soap opera.

Speaking of soap operas, that little Dora continues to look for Willy B wherever he goes.

Once and a while they meet across the hallway…

While I was on my perimeter check this morning I came across Meredith grooming her buddy Nutmeg.

Then Betsy came over to groom me.

Oh, the mystique of Willie B!
Considering that there are already 3 in her troop, I wonder what makes him more attractive to Little Dora and Rayne than they? I mean, he IS a handsome dude, and I get why the 5 OG cougars go gaga over him, since all they had was Burrito….but it’s so funny that something makes him so attractive to them!
I thought Cy’s magazine squeaks sounded like food grunts, too

Ohhhhh, JB!! The video of Cy and his magazines just drives me wild with glee and astonishment, just as I feel when Jamie is with her mags. As he’s flipping pages with his mouth, one of the pages is titled “Brainy Questions” and seems to have photos of primates and others, at least that’s how it appeared. “Brainy” is right!!! Just sends me to the moon how intelligent these “folks” are, how creative, how powerful their personalities, how resilient given their storied histories, old their souls. Thank you, JB, for providing this wonderful end to my difficult week.

And now the hairs on JB’s forearm have cowlicks, courtesy of Betsy.

Hmm…the last time I saw a video of Cy reading, he was making chirping sounds, In this video, it almost sounds as if he is letting forth an alarm call…unless, that is, he is reacting as I often react when I am in the checkout line and the cover of some magazine catches my eye and elicits from me the utterance, “Oh, give me a break, already!” If only I could alarm call like Cy, I think that I might provide a more coherent reaction towards the weapons of mass distraction on display.

I might have missed this information some time
but do the chimps have a preferred had as in being left-handed or right-handed?

    • J.B. says

Research with captive chimpanzees has shown strong evidence for handedness, with about 70% of chimpanzees being right-handed. Studies in wild chimpanzees show similar support for handedness but the dominant hand depended on the task, with right-handedness being seen in nut-cracking and left-handedness being seen in ant-fishing.

Hmmm … A name for that vocalization – how about
    Cy-ren song 😉

Hey Willy B is a hottie didn’t you know. Dora is smitten! And surely she remembers him from Wildlife Waystation and is excited to see him again.

Hey! What do you mean “they only had Burrito”??? 😛

    “Cowlicks” LOL 😀

I’m with you on Burrito! Sure Willy B is a hunk but Burrito is Mr. Personality marching to the beat of his own drum!

Yeah, but for all of his loveability, Burrito just didn’t have their respect. A beta is a beta

The look on Cyrus’s face when he reads his magazines is priceless. Pure Joy!

    Fabulous J.B.!

Thinking back on Jamie seeing a snake in her book, did Cy see something amongst his hundreds of pages that he didn’t like? He got up and moved away from where he sitting while vocalizing his ‘Cy-ren song’ :).

To the Bovines : Could they be more beautiful and could your sky be bluer? I don’t think so.

** Question for Anher or any of the WW caregivers/volunteers :
Did Cy have reading materials at WW or is this new enrichment for him? If yes, did he show a preference to a particular subject? (Jamie prefers primates and architectural design like Dwell magazine. Go figure!) I am just curious. So much fun seeing him deep into his studies.

And to the seven getting all riled up over Willy B : Maybe they aren’t swooning over him at all. Maybe they are trying to encourage him to leave his boardwalk and get out on the grass so he can forage and frolic like they do. I can hear them now “Come on Willy B, you can do it! Place one foot down and then the other. Trust us, there’s a whole new amazing world out there on our hill….Just do it!”

To Dora and her obvious adoration of Willy B : I feel you Dora. I’ve been there. How could he not adore you right back?! (Oh that photo of those two looking at each other. So many scenarios race through my head as to what they could be thinking but only they know the significance of their shared distant communication.)

One if the WW caregivers, Deanna, follows the blog, and said she didn’t know Cy liked magazines.

So glad to see you’re an honorary bovine J.B. It just shows how very comfortable they are with you…how special. And it makes my heart soar to see and hear Cy and his magazines….he’ll be starting a book club with Jamie soon. You certainly hit on one of his passions in enrichment quickly……they all seem to have settled in quickly, and it must seem like chimp heaven to them.

    Hi.
I am very interested to know if the 3 and the 6 knew each other previously and if so, does this increase or decrease the cases of them becoming one group.
Also, would love to know if Cy had pictures to look at before, or if his fascination is for something new.
    Thank you from Australia

Some of the 6 and the 3 knew rach other. Fingers crossed!

Hi Karen – We understand that Willy B and Honey B lived with Dora and Terry at some point but we don’t know exactly when or for how long. It could certainly be a benefit if they all lived together, as long as they got along, but group dynamics are always so unpredictable.

We also understand that, yes, Cy was given magazines in the past.
